Right now the plan is to wipe for release.  Testers (all of us playing pre-wipe) will keep knowledge and get a free Pandora DLC.  My plan is to do the tutorial right away and be playing at a M&C level on day one.  I'm sure a few of us have similar ideas.  If this is the way of it, I am completely content, however.....There is a great deal of discontent with this process and I completely understand that.  A lot of you have been playing for 3 plus years and feel that you deserve more. I myself have only been on for a year and a bit, but in that time, I have crafted a couple of ships that I am very attached to.  I will feel the pain when they are wiped.  What if Devs were to allow us to keep 2 or 3 ships that we particularly love?  No slots open, no mods, and of course, we might not have the crew to man them right away.  I know that the whole "level playing field" has been discussed, but lets be honest; there is no way a new player in on the same playing field as Reverse (for instance)...even if he is in a row boat.

I believe a full Wipe, including Books is the Way to go.

@Angus MacDuff we both know you can rebuild exactly taht Ship. Since there is nothing attached to taht Special Ship (Expect Emotions ofc)

I'm not saying you're wrong and I could live with that.  I do wonder what it would hurt if a couple of ships were able to be saved.  My emotions matter to me :(

I think admin wrote a few weeks ago something like this:
we will do whats the best for the game

Thats it. Admins are responsible for the game. I don't think they want a broken game after all this years of work.

I think it will be strange to build up all that again, but I also think it will be again a good feeling when the final rank is achieved.

I'm looking forward!

Again, I don't disagree.  Just saying that @admin could throw us a bone and it might calm down some of the angst.  I will play on regardless, but I don't see what would be hurt.  I'm going to be out there in my Herc or Pandora anyway.

The most fun this game has ever been to me was when there were 2000+ players involved in the initial arms race to build the first SOL's in the OW....

Everyone was pooling resources in the nation to try and get the mats and crafters to a level where they could build a 1st rate....  It was a sense of national pride.

I believe it was the Brits who showed off the first one in the OW and everyone was in awe...

Hope to see something like that again...  So much fun.

I'm worried it'll just be a DLC fest for at least the opening salvo of 1-2 weeks.

but it is also important to help new players learn the enjoyable experiences of the game, even if there are some frustrating parts (there will always be irritations).

I've started fresh before and we've all done the test beds.  Do the tutorial.  Start your forge and mines to make better cannon.  Acquire money and start your crafting buildings.  Clans will re-form and want to gain ports.  I'm hoping Devs will have the "Welcome to the Caribbean" tutorial perfected so that new players will have something to go with.  DLC's will be the main focus of the game but not the Rattvisan cause no one will be able to crew it.

It should be a full wipe. The time spent in the game is headstart enough, your own XP bar is plenty of advantage over newcomers.

I love how people think at release there will be an influx of new players ... if your interested in the age of sail and want to play an mmo game you will have purchased this game already and either will be playing already or will have played and left ... there will be very few who are waiting for release before they buy

maybe there wil be some that have left that come back but i dont see them staying the reason for quitting in most cases havent changed .. ie getting ganked and the time sink required to play, starting from scratch is the biggest time sink of all

ps i hope im wrong

Personally, I already deleted my character and created a new one, just to see what a wipe will be like.

My suggestions

  — allow basic cutters to engage in PVP after the wipe

 — reduce the weight of trade goods.  When first trying to get money through trading, a basic cutter can hold 1 banana, or maybe two cannot remember.

Have you played with the new cargo and passenger missions?  You wont need to worry about the cargo capacity of a cutter.

Nooo, don’t allow Basic Cutters to be part in PVP, Basic Cutter should only be a Ship to sail from A to B. Not more...

We don't deserve a thing but I think it would be nice of the devs to let us keep our books atleast. Rank is no issue for me either. I have an issue with someone wiping my books because its a HUGE timesink and does nothing meaningful for the game overall.

With the new permit wall I'm not sure I'll be able to rebuild my favorite ship any time soon.

and we don't even know what is hiden behind what yet.  We just know that some permits will only be through chest drops, but which ones?  Would be nice if we had a list of these info from @admin.  So far I can't craft replacement Reno's cause there is no Permits.  So is it under chest drops or still being balanced?

Tutorial puts you at 250 crew so yes every one will be in Pandoras, Hercs, LRQ for the first week.   Once you get the cannons for them your off.  I think it's best to say my first day will be getting the econ set up to craft cannons and repairs.  Going against AI you can prob even skip the repairs and just port in after each battle.  Than by end of week one we will see folks in Herm's and than Ratt's.   With it's stats than why would you need any other ships than the Ratt to grind out things?

Why would you be doing trade with a basic cutter any way?  It doesn't take much to just cap a Trader Brig and be on your happy way with a ship to trade in. Hell we where capping LVG the first hours of the last wipe using 10-15 cutters swarm.

DLCs after release have potential to be rather game breaking with you think about it.  Hit the tutorials, grind for 15mins and you're in a pretty good ship and have years of experience.  Any new players will get slaughtered and either be forced to buy the DLCs or be at a severe disadvantage trying to figure out crafting and getting through the permit wall.  A new player who just shelled out 40 bucks shouldn't have to purchase DLC content just to be on the same footing 1 week after launch.

Kinda why I thought that Devs could let us keep a couple of our ships through the wipe.  It can't really cause any harm and it would generate some good will with the vets.  No new player can compete with a vet under any circumstances.  Yes, they also have the option to do the Tutorial and gain the rewards (which includes a Herc at the moment).

To get into the same sort of rank however does not take long. It is after the Captain/Post Captain when things become a significant grind. Without tutorial and playing around an hour or two a day you can rank up quickly to the rank that will allow you in the larger 5th rates and even 4th rates.

but is that why you play though? to craft a high end ship after about 1 week? isnt the thing about gaming that you should be having fun with most parts of it and get an sense of achievement when something is done? people are different but thats the case for me :)

I to belive the books should be wiped , it will give vets a massively unfair advantage over new players , just my opinion but the devs are making a mistake not doing it imo, i have close to 1000 hours in Naval action on steam and i would not mind books being wiped at all because i belive in fair play.

let's be honest about it , the only players worried aboout keeping the books are the loud mouth look at me types that infest global.
