Little things you'd like to see

Recommended Posts

Would love to:

. Be able to name my ships

. Be able to have a character / crew / officer profile(s)

. Have a tavern where you can recruit your crew / officers

. Have a tavern where you can trade rumors / gossip

. Customize my flags / ship paint / figurehead

. Turn on/off signal lights at night

. Have access to sextant and map plot charts for open sea reckoning

Granted some of these are probably not small tweaks

A little BIG thing i would like to see, when you buy goods in harbour whitout outpost it will automatically go to your ships hold so you dont accidently leave em. I know yo uget notice, but you get 2 more notices of missing guns and repair on traders ship... You dont always notice it.

New blueprints that enable learning how to build specialty ships like Navy Brigs and Privateers. Could be named "Learn: Privateer", or "Apprenticeship: Privateer" or whatever synonym you want. Make it cost a bunch of labor hours and gold. They create ship notes that you use to learn how to build new ships.

This is a change that crafting and the economy need.

1.) I would like to see some character and historicity brought to the ports in Open World. Some basic models for the town's appearance, like unique forts, cathedrals, and so on, as well as something as simple as unique splash art for the 'In port' screen.

2.) a reputation system for regions, where you could raise your standing (and maybe slightly lower your prices or something) in an area by doing missions for the Governor at the region's capital. This could create a sense of ownership or belonging to ports outside your faction capital and might encourage player dispersement.

@ TheWalrus: I like the reputation system you suggest.  On a related note, it would be cool to be able to get more information through one's telescope.  Perhaps you could learn to assess a ship, its captain, the type of crew, the type of guns, where the ship hails from, etc... using a scope.  Perhaps you could also get character upgrades including more advanced telescopes - which in turn give you more information about a ship you are sizing up on the horizon.

Reputation in Naval Action

The full concept I cooked up

Reputation is a regionally specific quality that, like experience, unlocks certain things for your character or provides certain advantages, but only within the borders of the region. As players complete tasks, provide investments, and build up a region, they are rewarded with certain perks that visiting traders and navies may not be privy too. This is in accordance with the region's acting governor, which could be a randomly generated name paired with a faction appropriate portrait.

Gaining Reputation

1.) A player gains reputation by taking missions from the Regional Capital Port, be it a delivery quest, escort, exploration, or simple seek and destroy. These give a set amount of rep along with the XP and Gold they already award.
2.) Players could choose to simply buy reputation by investing in the port (or bribing the governor) but only up to a certain level.
3.) The more a trader sells items to the port, they will very slowly raise in reputation.

Reputation Limits

1.) The governor of the port can only dish out a limited amount of reputation a day, and each player has an individual cap.

example: The governor of Nassau can award 1,000 total XP a day, but each player can only receive a cap of 30xp a day.

2.) You can only gain reputation from ports you can dock in, and when the port is lost to another nation, you lose a percentage of that rep and the ability to benefit from it.

Reputation Perks

The more reputation you gain, the more benefit you receive.

1.) Earn a 1-5% discount on goods, upgrades, and ships.

2.) Unlock A.I. generated higher quality items (like mastercraft upgrades and the like)

3.) Slightly reduced cost to repair your ship at any port within the region.

3.) Unlock special buildings for your outposts (like a Tavern, which might provide a small morale bonus to your crew in combat whenever you are within the region, and so on.)

Overall

The Reputation System isn't, in my mind, a replacement for good trade networks, a guild, a powerful outpost, or solid player rank, but rather something that gives you incentive and attachment to a region and makes you want to fight to keep it. It provides a bit of depth and interest to the game at a small amount of complexity or burden.

Just my thoughts, anyone is free to let me know what you think. Thanks for reading.

1. Storms! When sailing into a storm you should go into an automatic battle instance and ride out the storm according to its intensity. Maybe have a couple of options available to "fight" the storm, and every wrong decision should cost you, either the lives of your sailors or some spars and sail damage. There were many perils on the open sea appart from Pirates, mermaids and sea monsters... ;)

2. Maybe some marine life to pretty things up? Seagulls when getting close to land, Dolphins playing around the ship, sharks swimming around cast aways in battles and maybe even the occasional Whale?

3. Interactive Plotting map! Please please please! I am not asking for a map that shows your ship's position all the time, please not that! It is not an arcade game. But a way of determining your position with a sextant, and then plotting it on the map. Then drawing lines to setup new courses, or alter course for those long voyages.

4. Landed battle instances. When attacking a ship or being attacked and land falls withing the attacking circle, there should be land in the battle instance as well. This should apply to port battles as well obviously. This will influence and limit strategical decisions immensely!

5. Closed gunports in open world. (Suppose that would come at a later stage for final touches)

6. Selective instances: When a player wants to practice his sailing without being fired uppon or just go into an instance and enjoy the beauty of the mechanics, sea, ship and marine life while being on the open sea. This instances could also be used to use a sextant to determinne your position, and maybe even make it possible to climb the rigging, enter the cabin, or go down to the gundecks, to enjoy all the spectacular aspects of life at sea. (I know its allot to ask especially the last part) Offcourse these instances should be accesible to other players in the open world, which could end up in a battle.

7. Open world spyglass! Another PRETTY please. This is so neccesary in the game! Instead of clicking on ships for info, make them "Unidentified" and then after Identifying them with the spyglass, when you hover with the mouse over the ship, it will give you the info. Also to identify ports and other landmarks in the distance, we do not always want to enter a port, but just identify them from a distance in order to get your bearings on the map.

8. Change the terminology of Front, Back, Left and Right to "Fore", "Aft", "Port" and "Starboard", the landsmen will catch on eventually. ;)

9. Stunsails for that extra speed!! :D

Oh you lads at Game Labs have opened pandoras box with this game!! I salute you for the brilliant effort and for everything that has already been implemented and for what is still to come! Bravo, Bravo, Bravo!! If I could I would buy you all a beer! You bloody well deserve it!

Would love to have:

- Range rating on guns

- A distance / range measure with the spyglass / telescope view

- The number of active players with an warehouse in a given port (as to see whether it is active or not for crafting and trade)

I would love to see that the items in the store is sorted alphabetically, like most traders I have a spreadsheet showing the buying and the selling price of each resource in the different ports, each time I visit a port I update my sheet and it can be a bit of a hassle because I have to jump all over the sheet/shop list to find the different resources. :)

There were no range finders back in the day. Instead accuracy relied on skilled gunners. I think the current system is quite accurate and shouldnt be touched. Back in the day, the gunners would fire a ranging shot to determine the correct elevation and charge for the guns, this ranging shot would be fired on a certain point of the roll of the wave, for example at the crest in order to have the gun at the same elevation (or as close as possible) to the same point every time before firing. Once a shot hit, or get really close to the target, they would let loose the whole broadside.

Accurate gunnery was a real challenge that relied on skill. And I think the game represent this very accurately.

. Be able to name my ships - would be really nice, and the name should be displayed on the back of the ship although it should be limited to certain characters only.

. Be able to have a character / crew / officer profile(s) - agree 100%

. Customize my flags / ship paint / figurehead - agreed, but this should be limited to certain colors only. I really do not want to see an all pink Victory called "#pink monster" being sailed by a troll.

Lol. "The Pink Monster" would indeed make for a rather terrifying pirate ship name.  It is very true that allowing folks to name ships (or anything for that matter) - or even, as others have suggested, draw their own arms/flag motifs....  will certainly introduce some below the belt / racist / derogatory behaviors.  That said, I would not want to limit the game based on the low percentage of low lives.  So far, I have been very impressed by the quality of the community in this game.  But it's just my first week.... perhaps I have just been lucky.

A little thing that might be neat is instead of the "Crossed swords" battle marker on OW there could be a little image of two ships firing at each other. The firing could be sort of like a flashing light then perhaps a sound of cannons attached to the image marker. This could give a visual and audio queue for players on OW and be immersion enhancing. It would also add to the feel during a rain storm hearing cannons in the distance but not seeing them.

This, if people want to do racist and biggoted names, then ban them. Boom they lose out on this great game and we don't have to deal with them. Give players as much customization as possible imo.

Viewpoints from various part of the ships (bow, stern, crows nest, ships cabin)

Wildlife, common or rare sightings (whales, dolphins off the bow, birds etc etc), with associated sounds (whalesong, bird calls etc).

Crew songs and music.

To be able to put a crew member on watch to shout when they spot land or another ship.

To be able to fish or trawl.

one change I would like to see is ships are able to be sold with the permanent upgrades that you have installed, instead of having to destroy them. I don't think that a ship that had copper plate hull in the 1700 was stripped of it before changing hands to a new owner.
