  1. I am certainly looking forward to this update. I have my reservations about the repairing of masts, but I am happy to test it out! The long timer should mitigate any of the more prominent complaints that come to mind.
  2. The Square Rigged chart has been updated to reflect a more accurate sailing configuration.
  3. I am no pirate! I fight for the King's Navy (Britain) on PvP2. I am apart of the Sons of Britain clan. If you are British as well, I would be happy to sail with you.
  4. You are indeed correct, Haibeo. When jibeing across the wind in a Square Rigged Ship, at closed haul (45 degrees from windward) the aft sail should flip toward the direction of your turn and the fore sail flipped against it. This will provide the fastest turn. I will update the chart tonight
  5. Thanks for the feedback, everyone! I do have a Cerberus now so I can test the square rig vessels, and I will watch the supplied videos and try to rework the square rig chart to be more accurate. Lisa-Azra, I've noticed that the fore and aft rigged vessels aren't nearly as responsive to sail positions as the square rigs are, but that doesn't mean they aren't helping per say. What I have personally found is that you must turn with the rudder and the sail positions don't necessarily increase the rate of your turn (in fore and aft) but it does increase the tightness of your turn when you use these configurations.
  6. Hello, I have joined the ranks of the Sons of Britain and look forward to serving with you all. Godspeed, gentlemen!
  7. Having only just joined the community at its steam launch, I am thoroghly impressed with the game and very excited to see where it goes. Thank you, devs, for providing us with this magnificent work.
  8. Understood. My steam name is "Gaspode (The Walrus). I will contact you there. Thank you!
  9. As a PvP2 British player, I can attest to the chaos caused by the O4V pirates. I have been trying to join the British West Indies Trading Company's PvP2 division, but I fear their attention remains mostly invested in PvP1. If no British trading companies gain traction soon, I may just start my own. I have a group of 5 or 6 traders I party with, and we've made a couple million gold between the lot of us, but with a well established network of informants for prices in various harbors, I know we can make ten times that. So anyone know of a good PvP2 trading co?
  10. Sailing the high seas!

  11. Reputation in Naval Action The full concept I cooked up Reputation is a regionally specific quality that, like experience, unlocks certain things for your character or provides certain advantages, but only within the borders of the region. As players complete tasks, provide investments, and build up a region, they are rewarded with certain perks that visiting traders and navies may not be privy too. This is in accordance with the region's acting governor, which could be a randomly generated name paired with a faction appropriate portrait. Gaining Reputation 1.) A player gains reputation by taking missions from the Regional Capital Port, be it a delivery quest, escort, exploration, or simple seek and destroy. These give a set amount of rep along with the XP and Gold they already award. 2.) Players could choose to simply buy reputation by investing in the port (or bribing the governor) but only up to a certain level. 3.) The more a trader sells items to the port, they will very slowly raise in reputation. Reputation Limits 1.) The governor of the port can only dish out a limited amount of reputation a day, and each player has an individual cap. example: The governor of Nassau can award 1,000 total XP a day, but each player can only receive a cap of 30xp a day. 2.) You can only gain reputation from ports you can dock in, and when the port is lost to another nation, you lose a percentage of that rep and the ability to benefit from it. Reputation Perks The more reputation you gain, the more benefit you receive. 1.) Earn a 1-5% discount on goods, upgrades, and ships. 2.) Unlock A.I. generated higher quality items (like mastercraft upgrades and the like) 3.) Slightly reduced cost to repair your ship at any port within the region. 3.) Unlock special buildings for your outposts (like a Tavern, which might provide a small morale bonus to your crew in combat whenever you are within the region, and so on.) Overall The Reputation System isn't, in my mind, a replacement for good trade networks, a guild, a powerful outpost, or solid player rank, but rather something that gives you incentive and attachment to a region and makes you want to fight to keep it. It provides a bit of depth and interest to the game at a small amount of complexity or burden. Just my thoughts, anyone is free to let me know what you think. Thanks for reading.
  12. 1.) I would like to see some character and historicity brought to the ports in Open World. Some basic models for the town's appearance, like unique forts, cathedrals, and so on, as well as something as simple as unique splash art for the 'In port' screen. 2.) a reputation system for regions, where you could raise your standing (and maybe slightly lower your prices or something) in an area by doing missions for the Governor at the region's capital. This could create a sense of ownership or belonging to ports outside your faction capital and might encourage player dispersement.
  13. Excellent post! I want to add that every tick mark on the compass represents 15 degrees of rotation. Knowing the exact heading of a far port can be very beneficial, as a tiny margin of error can account for a large distance between your target and where you actually end up. Personally, I screenshot the map and bring it into photoshop, then use the Line tool to draw a course from my location to my target. Before you let go of left click on the Line tool, it tells you the exact degree offset from 0 (directly east) that your heading should be.
  14. Top notch! I will be keeping this open on my second monitor during boarding actions! Thank you very much.
  15. Ahoy Captains, It took me a lot of time, reading, and watching tutorials to grasp even the basics of manual sailing, and I wanted to do something for new players so that they may gain a better understanding in a more time-effective manner. To that end, I have employed my design skills into an easily read chart of sail positions to achieve tight, efficient turns in combat (configurations that are accessible to new players, though they will cost the player some speed and rudder authority), but I would love to have some feedback from more experienced players on how I can make these charts even more useful. Do you know of any better sailing configurations for tight turns? Are these charts navigable and intuitive? Let me know your thoughts so that I can improve these for all players to use! Thanks.
  16. I've created a simple guide that has worked fairly well for me. I'm not sure how 'correct' these steps are, but they have certainly allowed me to better control my battlefield movements in both running position and tacking on my Pickle. I have also created a guide for square rigged vessels, but I haven't tested it well enough to post. I should clarify that this chart is really for tight turning, and is not going to grant you any additional speed, just improve your battlefield control.
  17. Perhaps I should also mention that I sail on PvP2, and I have a keen interest in helping grow the Naval Action community and see Britain rise as the greatest power of the server. I am new to the game (only played around 30 hours), but I am learning quickly and will be happy to continue learning from this company's senior officers, as well recruit and help officiate and organize in any way I can. Representing the most powerful company in the history of the world is an opportunity that I am most delighted to take.
  18. Hail! I would like to pledge my brig and lynx into service for the West Indies Trading Company, for the glory of the empire and our blessed Queen! I personally assisted with the capture of Pedro Cat and Bugle Cay, acting as both financier and blockade, and have established significant trade routes as far north as Florida. I would be honored to be considered for duty, and will fill out any necessary applications. Thank you.
