Little things you'd like to see

Odds n Ends.

My son and I are new to this game and are having a lot of fun. In the spirit of sharing our thoughts for improvements as requested, we present the following list. Apologies if some or most of this has been discussed elsewhere or actually is already included in the game and we just haven't discovered it yet,

My teenage son's thoughts:

  • More people on deck
  • The addition of marines and small arms fire
  • The breaking of spars and ripping of sails if too much canvas is put out in a strong wind
  • Ships take more damage before sinking - not one of the 60 ship-of-the-lines in the five hour battle of Trafalgar sank (except for the Achille, which blew up).
  • Make chain-shot spin

My dodgy thoughts from a mind dulled by 40 more years of life:

  • A sailing test course where you don't need to worry about 'enemy ships' but can just practice sailing in a variety of weather conditions; likewise perhaps a chance to practice shooting with some anchored old barks nobody wants any more.
  • A more developed navigation component that might allow one to 'hand' plot one's course on a chart; heck, one could even get into transects, chronometers, and the like.
  • Hurricanes
  • The occasional sea shanty.
  • Gold rewards for successfully transporting valuables from point A to point B.

All for now. Great job, thanks.

It would be great if you can either load captured goods in a captured ship to send to port, use the hold capacity of your fleet, and/or add the captured vessel to your fleet if there's room.  Additionally, if this were possible, it would be nice to be able to have cargo ship escorts.  That way, you can have a couple of trader snows to move a large quantity of goods while providing the protection from a frigate, instead of trying to move one trading ship load of goods and relying on AI escorts for protection.  It would be more realistic for a convoy scenario to have more traders and less escorts.

CROWS NEST VIEW - need to have an instant crows nest view - it is laborious to hit home several times before you get the unlock and then wait the gruelling time to get an overview as you hold your finger on the z button.  Need a button which gives you an automatic view from above - with the ability to use spyglass.

I agree. Having to sink 20 ships to be promoted to 1st Lieutenant is a bit much.

Especially since I have to use a Brig or Snow with insufficient crew numbers!

Honor kill system aint that big of a fuzz.. you havnt gotten to the part where you need to farm 20k/40k exp and cant think of the one after that;)...

If they where to keep the system, either let it be kills or exp. not both. or if it is Both, tweak the exp part...(but as far as i know and/or heard this is mainly a testing phase to cover all ships... but could be wrong, so many gossip happening lately...)

altho have to say to it that ppl should be aware not everyone has 4+ hours a day the time to play to get some kills/exp farming going, specially if an avg fight is between the 15 to 45 mins . (and no i dont want it to be easy either) but it shoudnt be as the way it curently is.

I would like to have a bit more animation and things to do during long trips so you have something to look at.

Like the ability to fish during these trips, be it for consumption or to sell at your next stop

In open world there should be sea life and birds near coastlines.

In a battle you would want to see sloops and debris floating after sinking a ship

We need a tavern in each port to pick up quests and trading gossip, like you could buy a trading tip and get information what the latest most profitable trip was in the region.

For the trading system you need to have some sort of lag on the information about the markets.

At that time there was no such thing as real time information.

What I would very much appreciate is, in a similar maner to selecting rolling fire selection, the option to determine how fast the broadside will be, simultaneous, almost simultaneous, fast, as it is now and slow. No need for very slow as you can press space bar at your own leisure to get that effect.

This is to ensure you maintain your ships speed and get the maximum amount of hits on a smaller target up close, when stern raking for example.

Also (almost) simultaneous broadsides would be effing cool. Obviously almost impossible due to the amount of crew coordination that would require.

tl;dr: Broadside rate of fire options to help maintain maximum ship speed when presented with a difficult target.

The devs say that broadsides can't be any closer to simultaneous than they are now, without devoting tons of resources to overhauling the sound system.

And really, only a brand-new ship could fire a simultaneous broadside anyhow, as it put a lot of stress on the timbers.

While boats are sinking, it would be a nice effect if they slowly took additional damage as they 'broke apart', leading to masts coming down or fires as crew are busily grabbing gear to abandon ship.  Additionally, more turbulent water around the hull would be a nice touch, as air escaping the hull and water crashing over a settling deck would likely cause in conditions beyond calm.

I know that this has been mentioned many times but i think this game needs custom nameplates for ships. ships shouldn't be called Constitution or Victory, they should be called by their class like the United States Class that way we don't see tons of Constitutions but instead see the class of ship and the name that the player chose for that ship. I know its not priority but i think it's needed just to give more personality and more connection with your ship. Also custom colors would be nice, I'm not talking major changes, just the ability to change the main hull color and the stripe color, but I don't mind if that never happens. nameplates are more important.

"Be able to make notes and draw on the map with a full set of navigation tools. dividers ruler and protractor. For plotting curses and listing port goods."

+1

Ability to put markers on the map, as in Silent Hunter III will be fine. Ability to plan my navigation can help me in Open world playing and searching ports.

I'd like to see a bit better information and possibly pictures of boats before buying them.  I'm just an occasional player and know the boats that have been around for a while, but for the seemingly constant and beautiful additions, it would be nice to see what I'm getting and know a bit more about it before purchase, such as turning rate, top speed, stability (how much it heels), armor, etc.  This could be incorporated in a proposed encyclopedia that I've seen suggested as well.
