Little things you'd like to see

Recommended Posts

Well as the main sailing dynamic is pretty robust id like to see some immersive featuring for example:

  • Hourglass/period Timepieces.
  • Realistic night sky and Sun/Moon positions
  • Navigation tools to simulate Sextants etc.
  • Editable charts, to show progress when sailing.
  • Database of Historical ship names allocated by the Admiralty or Nations sea power.
  • Taverns for  crews, press gang option leading to skill increases in crew skill.
  • Barracks for marines where they can be trained.
  • Ships surgeon.

One of the little things I'd like to see is better formating.

I found that when I enter battle, my Skipper Auto is halfway behind the panel with the numbers showing my ammo. This makes it pretty difficult to accuratly judge my speed and other info Skipper Auto gives.

It would also help if there was some sort of list of different key functions when sailing or in battle. It really helps to know how to fire a cannon.

Welcome aboard, mate! As it was mentioned a couple of times by devs already,

User interface will continue to deteriorate for quite some time. We do not want to waste resource polishing something that is actively evolving and changing. Finalization and rework of the UI will happen only after all core features are added.

In your case, probably, a better resolution is the key to temporary fix the issue

Storms.

Real storms. Not this moderate rain and somewhat reduced visibility (though the water droplets on the screen effect is nice). I mean the kind that have large waves that you need to turn perpendicular to in small ships, that could capsize ships in real life (but not in-game; maybe just requiring anchoring to avoid some damage), and that turn daylight into near nighttime darkness. With lightning and the (very) rare hurricane. A game I used to play, uncharted waters online, had storms that could wash up logs onto your deck, end current battles and prevent new ones from starting, rip sails, damage hulls, and even sink you if you couldn't repair. However, due to there being no way to restore durability, I feel like ship sinking during storms is a bit too intense. While I feel like ending current battles because a storm hits in open world would be a huge slap in the face, I don't think new ones being prevented is exactly bad; during intense storms, Mother Nature would be far more a threat than some puny group of men and their cannons.

I know this is being considered though so I'll leave it at that, hopefully some ideas in there sound good.

Nation-specific bonuses.

I don't mean game-changingly big, and it would have to be historically accurate; British, due to their superior naval training, have a -2.5% cone of fire width. Dutch, the masters of production and trade, are able to purchase +5% goods from any allied port, +7.5% from their capital, and/or +2.5% craftinging x. Spanish, with their conquistadors' knowledge of unorthodox land battle, have a boost to aboardage attack and defense (I don't know enough about how this is calculated to make a hard suggestion). Of course, these numbers would have to be tweaked accordingly, but what I'm thinking of is a player on the line between, say, Dutch or French might be swayed to the Dutch side if they're more crafting-oriented. Just a thought.

Cannon malfunctions visible.

In battle, you can see damage to your hull, to your mast, to your sails, but not to a cannon...aside from the fact you're suddenly firing less cannons than you should in a volley. Why not add something like a bent barrel for cannons that become unusable?

Ship naming. (I'm sure this has been mentioned before, but still...)

This can either be a purely owner-viewed flavor text in port, or it could be visible when a player is selected. The latter format would be something like '<rank> <player> sailing a <ship type> named "<ship name>" ' such as me sailing a yacht named "Dinghy" would read as: 2nd rate Lieutenant poison sailing a Yacht named "Dinghy".

  • Flags in open world
  • Option to turn off teardrop effects when not using the spyglass (really like the rain but for screens i would like to disable the droplets)
  • save/show the average price you have paid for your cargo
  • notebook (for own usage, maybe even tradable)
  • Spyglass at open sea
  • Navigation tools: draw lines and circles at the map, ruler to measure distance on map, compass in open world and map, a nomogram

edit: remove circle of death when pressing ctrl+h

I would like to see...

Port Clock in home screen

Weather conditions outside the port whilst in home screen

The chat interface could have an indicator that a person has a PM. I notice many people tell people they have PM'd them (if chat box is not stretched out you dont see them).

Deck view in battle.

If I am in aiming mode at my guns and I turn toward the bow or stern of my ship i will be warped halfway up the mast...

Can't I just look around from that same point without the weird warp..

I'd also like the default in OW to be deck level instead of mid mast as well.

Mission of the day or week:

When you accept a mission of the week you can enable or disable it at any time within the week.  When you enable it, the mission will load with whatever is included for the mission (A certain type of ship, etc).  This is a great way to not only learn about different ships early on, but also a great way to earn xp/gold.  (This is inspired by Tie Fighter.  I had certain missions and was given certain ships to perform tasks and lost them when the task was over.  Escort missions, rendezvous missions, I had a particular ship with certain cannons, etc).

GPS:

I'm sure this has been mentioned but in open world I'd like to know where I am located on the map.  I would also like the map to be interactive so that I can click on a destination and my ship auto-navigates to that location.

Deliveries:

If a beginner has no money, there should be another way besides combat, to earn gold. I would like to see delivery of goods from one port to another.

Tips:

Whenever I see the loading screen I would also like to see brief random tips  of things I can do...and maybe have the option to turn it off.

I have only been playing for a few days so my apologies if these suggestions have already been mentioned or is not intended...or if it's in game and I just haven't found it yet.

What about small loot from PvP? For example it can be imaginary ' rations ' different for all nations.

lets say if you sink pirate ship you would get 10x rum and 5 copper , GB 10x tea and 5 silver , Spain 10x something and 5x gold and so on.

This way after large or small battles there would be something to loot instead of just watching numbers on the screen (XP and coins).

As for myself i always carrying 10x rum and 5 silver (couldn't get copper yet ) in any ship i sail.. So if you sink me you will get something :)

I'd like to see a vague map blip of where you are on the map, one that grows and shrinks the closer and further away from towns and landmarks. for example if you are in the middle of the Caribbean sea then it would be much larger than actually showing where you are if you were right next to a town. I'd also like to see it grow with longer time spent at sea.

Guns we not sure yet. You can change gun types on each deck and will be able to pick the number of guns on it. But inside that deck they will need to be similar (technology and ui limitations).

Naval Powers

here is a sneak peek into our national plans - these are not all of them - but well keep it for future posts.

1EPkADf.jpg

In addition to flags we will have an extensive system of authentic banners and ensigns that can show many things to your friends or enemies.

some examples (all are hand drawn by artists)

Gosh we need to update the website! :)

How future are these future plans and when will these be playable? I am actually the most excited I have been in a while about the chance to play Venice! Please say they will be about after the next hard wipe? Also Will the 6 Tails of the Venetian flag fly properly and independently of each other like they should?

Sorry if someone already suggested the following.

With no escort ships allowed any more above rank 4 (or is it rank 3 ?), I find that the port missions are very hard to accomplish in solo mode. Sure you can team up and then it's a different ball game but the issue is what can you do when you log in and your friends are away?

My Suggestion therefore would be to distinguish team missions from solo missions.

Examples:

  Solo missions

  • Fight a single ship (and not a pair of evil twins ;) ). If a ship has a fleet, their fleet would not appear in the battle instance.
  • Convey goods to a port and return under a set time.
  • Participate in a race. Swallow of the Seas: Goal is to be the first to circumnavigate a given island. Prizes would take into account the ship level (7 - 1)

   Team Missions

  • Enter a PVE fight where opposing BR adjusts to the size of the fleet entering the battle
  • Escort a transport convey from one port to another. During route, the convoy will be attacked at a random point (imagine Battle Marker popping up where the convoy was), team needs to be close by to enter battle immediately (time limit) and fend off the attackers while ensuring the convoy remains afloat). Depending on difficulty level there can be more or less pirates and more or less attacks before reaching destination.
  • Find and attack a convoy. Spies have discovered that an important convoy is leaving [Enter port name here] on the [Enter Date and Time here]. The convoy will be heavily guarded by escort ships. With your team mates, intercept the convoy. Capturing will deliver more XP and Gold than Sinking it. To simplify UI, we can imagine the same mechanism as today: One ship represented with the list of fleet ships mentioned in it's description.

Well, I can come up with many more of these missions and I'm sure the development team is thinking of them. My point is to add some extra gameplay for PVE even on PVP servers to extend the pleasure of logging in.

Bad weather may also be cool. Not sure if more than fog is implemented as I just started playing the game. Cyclones & weather to damage ships would be cool (although that's not really a little thing). What also would be nice is to see the constellations in the sky at night. Again, not sure if it's already implemented.

Sea shanties as background music for sailing, like the sailors sung during the period. If you've played AC IV: Black Flag you'll know what I have in mind. I'm not sure how to post youtube videos so you can watch it on the forum, but here's one for example:

Possibly have them crafted/collected/unlock more as you rank up (gain more crew, gain diversity in lead shantymen). Improv is probably a bit much to try to code, but if it can be done that'd be much more accurate and incredible.

Apologies if this idea has been posted, I haven't combed through the thread too thoroughly.

EDIT: Didn't realize youtube videos were parsed automatically.
