Little help - age of sail battle shouts and call backs. Moderated

Recommended Posts

Hello captains

Need more ideas for the battle shouts and call backs from the age of sail enthusiasts.

How it will work in game

The crews will shout random commands and responses during battle. Sometimes they will be battle related, action related or activity related.

For example the shout.

boarding related

Shout: Sand the decks (before boarding to not slip on blood).

Call back: Aye Captain, bring the sand to decks.

general

Shout: Whats the distance

Call back: 400 yards Captain

Not every shout needs a call back

For example

Where is the boatswain? Could just be a shout.

Please provide ideas on such shouts and call backs.

  1. Neutral generic activities (like calling the boatswain to quarterdeck, or any generic chatter) - main priority
  2. Boarding preparation and boarding
  3. Firing and preparation to fire
  4. Other activities.

Must be age of sail related and preferably in the 18th century language.

When double-tapping the A or D key:

  • Hard to port (maybe larboard?)
  • Hard to Starboard

Rudder back to neutral:

  • Rudder amidships

When pressing B

  • Go to battlesails

we need generic sounds mostly

things crew shout to each other and respond to each other during battle, or even just standing doing nothing.

what would you hear on deck basically.. if you just stand there and listen.

Dang, it's hard to think of things that aren't situational at all.

Can't even reference many components of the ship, in case your vessel doesn't have a quarterdeck.

  • Rudder amidships
  • Go to battlesails
  • Raise the Sails and drop the anchors

But in the meantime let's not suggest things that don't use period terminology.

Well, from my own experience on sailing ships I can tell that thee is not so much chat across the decks. The commading offcier gives an order and the order has to be executed.

Not much to chat about when you are pulling a rope or stuff.

Hi Admin,

you state "random" shouts. Rather than useful command?

if either way will add alot to the atmosphere.

I suggest a Dev buy a copy of Seamanship in the age of sail, John Harland.

Page 15 most languages used in NA.... sails... and also phrases and replys back.

if  possible would suggest rather than random... use updates like men killed, how much water we've taken etc....

Great work anyway lads, keep it going

its ok if it does not. sound greatly increases the atmosphere.. its ok if one of them occasionally asks to free jibs away if you ship have no jibs. But as sound memory is limited we will still use best and appropriate only. this is a brainstorming only.

Bring the powder charges: Can be a nice generic example of a phrase that can be appropriate in 99% of situations (even if your ship is stationary and not currently engaged.

Or just asking for a speed check with a response that can happen during or out of battle

when the distance closes between the foes

  • hoold faast (calming the nervous crew down)

damm you steel! -ninja-ed

enthusiastic shouts:

  • give 'em hell lads

any officer or marine soldier:

  • to your station sailor!

(if he wanted to flee into the deep of the hull)

-> can be triggered by a morale shock

How about a depth check?

Shout: Check the draught lines!

Call back: Steady as she goes!

When you takes leaks

Shout: Plug those leaks, mates, or we'll all meet Davy Jones!

Call back: Shoring the holes!

or funny ones?

Shout: Where's the pilot headed?

Call back: To the beach, sir!, or To Atlantis, sir!, In circles, sir!

or locational in OW...

When nearing a port..

Shout: Who's on the dock?

Call back: Land ho!

crossing the equator...(altho it's not in game atm)

Call: It's time for Neptune's Court!

In rough seas...

Shout: Batten down the hatches, ladies!

Call back: We're gonna get wet this time!

Maybe randomly in OW remind them of myths/superstitions?

Calls:

Plug your ears, boys, the Sirens be singing.

Be on the lookout for The Flying Dutchman.

The Kraken be lurkin' about.

also would be cool to have these in different languages we can choose.

Call: -Man overboard!

man overboard would require a man overboard :) too specific.

but good start as it will also help us (or other writers here) get some phrases out of it..

Throw those barrels overboard.. would be a better phrase.. useful both in battle and if you are not directly engaged.

"Very well dyce, and no more."

"Right the helm."

"Take care o' the lee latch!"

"No higher!" (above are instructions to helmsman)

"Fresh cartridges to the tops!"

"Blow your matches, lads!"

"Avast hauling!"

"Strike that lot below, damn your eyes!"  (two separate statements)

"Silence fore and aft!"

"Larbowlines, mind your charges."

"Afterguard, clap on that line."

"Pass the word for the carpenter's mate. Carpenter's mate to the cable tiers!"

"More hammocks topside, look alive!"

"Heave the log."

"Ease to the stoppers!"

"Starbowlines, tend the braces!"

"Waisters to the pumps!"

"Stand by to slack the foretops'l truss!"

I for one loose crew all the time. I don't know where they go, but I assume that some of them keep falling overboard. Maybe some of them get knocked overboard when cannonballs fly and create mayhem, and maybe some of them bail out in the heat of the action.

But of course, I get what you mean.

What about playing some sea shanties and sea songs? While crew is doing their daily routine work, like splicing ropes, washing the deck etc.? And/or let the crew sing.

If enemy ships comes into sight:

Call: Beat to quarters!

Boatswain: Aye, Aye, Captain!

Would be also awesome to hear the ship bell at least at midday and/or when there is bad weather/fog.

Yeah, really need a "Beat to quarters!" when the tag countdown starts...  Could be followed by another voice shouting "Sand the decks!" in response...

"On the roll, boys!" would be a good generic one during a battle...
