  1. No not really - hull structure close and length yes but everything else not so much. IRL no captain would have fought the Connie vs a 74, she was designed to run from them not fight one. Broadside weight may be closer in game but Bellona is firing far more weight in long guns for example. In game sure 4th rate makes sense, but not 3rd.
  2. @sterner Thanks for the reply! Looking forward to the game.
  3. @sterner I see the Testing forum is up and running. You noted earlier that a separate recruiting thread for alpha testers was going to be started. Is that still going to happen or do we have to wait and buy a preorder pack from the web site to be a tester?
  4. IMO The Pandora's box was made when they decided to give every hello kitty ship carronades on the main deck. Only a few ships in game carried carronade main armament IRL (Niagara, Surprise for example) and those were mostly the smaller ships not the Indefatigable with 42lb carros on the main deck. They could still tweak the system and limit the use of carros on main gun decks through. You don't want to nerf them to oblivion so that they are useless for the small 6th and 7th rates that carried them as main armament.
  5. Thanks for the post and guide @Coco well done. It took me far longer to get to lvl 50 and that was when we had xp for intermediate parts also! Now that I'll need to think about leveling up again this is a big help!
  6. @Angus MacDuff If you look closely you can see the bunched sailcloth which could indicate a reef taken in the fore course. Main course is furled. They may also be trimming the forecourse loosely to spill wind which could also account for the higher clew and billowing foot. I sailed on a replica of an early 17th century ship (1625) , Kalmar Nyckel. No reefing in the early 17th century. For the courses you had a "bonnet" attached to the bottom of the course which could be removed.
  7. I remember when there was 30 players on PVE around the time of the PVP server merge. For a casual player though it seems the grind is the same on both servers, but I haven't really played much on PVE so IDK.
  8. @admin I know you said all forts are to be removed but what about capital zone forts? Should capitols and non-capturable ports still have their fortifications? Everyone is talking about forts being a liabity in PB. What about in a regular battle instance no more running under the guns unless it is you clan/friend list port? IMO we should have some forts for large regional cities or something.
  9. IRL LRQ never carried carros only 8 lb long guns (should be 9 lb in game).
  10. Looks good!! I clearly see army building and technology elements of UG:CW in there. @sterner Can you give us any idea of when alpha/beta testing will start? oops - just saw your response in the other thread - thanks!
  11. First hour in NA - OW, what OW - just a blue and grey queue waiting for small ship battles in Sea Trials. Trying not to get rekt by the Brigs and Snows!
  12. Ideally we would have individual ship drafts and a hydrographic map. That would prevent craziness such as a 1st rate sailing right up to the beach! One reason IRL pirates, privateers and blockade runners preferred shallow draft vessels was to get into the areas where the large warships could not get them. (They don't necessarily sit higher in the water, rather they draw less, ie; 6 foot draft instead of 12 ft or more). But in the absence of a hydrographic layer adding another depth level is a good idea. 👍 Wouldn't have to be in just one area either.
  13. I did not find the use of the term Flotilla to describe a collection of ships in British use at least. Maybe the usage was confined to small ships like gun boats?
  14. Had the battle been decided differently Nelson's move to engage when he did may well have resulted in a court martial......
  15. Well it depends. One of the balancing problems in NA is the long timeline. So before say 1760 most frigates carried a main battery of 12lb long guns or 9lb guns and carros had not yet been invented. By 1800 the 18lb armed frigate was the standard with a few exceptions for 24lb armed heavy frigates. Also instead of 6lb guns on the QD&FC they now had carros either 24lb or 32lb.Just off the top of my head most smaller merchant ships and privateers would be armed with 6lb long guns or a mixture of 4lb, 6lb, 9lb and 12lb for larger ships. I am not counting Indiamen in that though. Pirates and privateers relied more on large crews for boarding than weight of broadside shot. BTW most of the frigates in game never ran full carro loadouts. The big exceptions are the Surprise and Essex. The Captain of the Essex protested the rearmament of his ship with mostly carros and he was right in the end. Just go to the Wiki entry for the USS Essex and you'll see the downsides. Usually only small 6th rates ran a main battery of carro because it really increased their firepower.
  16. @Norfolk nChance Here are some tidbits I got from some brief reading: The book I noted above goes into great detail on the administrative organization of the RN, including the various Boards (Admiralty, Victualling, etc. ) To your questions: Fleet organization: A Fleet would be composed of squadrons and sometimes further subdivided into divisions depending on how many ships and flag officers were in the fleet. Obviously the fleet operated as a line of battle. A rear admiral or commodore might have command of a division of several ships and be responsible to ensure that those ships were keeping station and following the sailing/fighting instructions. IMO the number of ships in a division or squadron was dependent on the circumstances and the size of the fleet. Many times fleet commanders did not even use divisions. A squadron was a formation of ships that could be part of a fleet or act independently. For example the Channel fleet often sent a squadron of ships "inshore" to watch the French fleet. Far flung stations may only have had a squadron assigned, such as the North American squadron at Halifax. I did not see any mention of a "flotilla" As to Stations. You had the Home Stations which consisted of either Naval bases or Dockyards and then you had overseas or foreign stations. From what I read in 1808 they were still using that term. The station commander was often different from the assigned squadron commander as well. I'll see if I can dig up some more info.
  17. I know where to get all the answers you need, unfortunately I am at work and the book is at home: "Nelson's Navy: The Ships, Men, and Organization, 1793-1815" by Brian Lavery https://www.amazon.com/Nelsons-Navy-Ships-Organization-1793-1815/dp/1591146119/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1549564134&sr=8-1&keywords=brian+lavery It is a great resource and you may be able to get a used HB copy for less than on Amazon. I will check when I get home for answers though.
  18. Patience Fluffy patience! You may want to play some Ultimate General:Civil War while you wait much more on target than a Warhammer game. 😉
  19. I 've been advocating for this for a long time. There should be consequences to your ship if you sail through a storm on full sails too. At this point I'll be waiting for the single player game for a full weather effects, sigh. 😢
  20. When I saw the title I though this was your quest to find an LGV-R 😕 Very entertaining log though - well done, sir!! 👍
  21. In English we say "2-6 Heave!" or of course for raising sail singing a chanty!
  22. Nice! There is always work to do on a wooden ship.
