  1. @DucksnakeNZ I agree!! Boy she is a beautiful traditional boat. Custom build or class? Look a bit like a classic Herreshoff design
  2. You have the answer already - all the development time is tied up in Dreadnoughts now.
  3. Let's not get pedantic here. Since you mentioned it however you are incorrect. US artillery in the AWI was organized as regiments and divided into companies. Maybe you were thinking of the ACW or modern TO&E? https://revolutionarywar.us/continental-army/artillery-regiments/ Here is another example, the reserve artillery battery of the French I Corps in 1815 comprising 87 men with 6 pieces 12 lb guns and 2 howitzers: 11ème Compagnie du 6ème Régiment d'Artillerie à Pied http://centjours.mont-saint-jean.com/detail_uniteFR.php?rubrique=O&unite=144 Several armies of the period also designated the artillery train as a company.
  4. I would like to see USS Texas. Last year Wargames ran an event to raise money for her restoration which is badly needed. Not that I am admitting to playing WoWs, but I do have the Texas in my docks. 😉 I posted some photos from USS Olympia in this thread. Here is another from a miniatures game of the Battle of Manila Bay held onboard Olympia with Admiral Dewey looking on.
  5. +1 I grew up near USS Olympia and played a miniatures battle of Manila Bay onboard! A beautiful pre-dread (well ok a protected cruiser). So the USS New Jersey is across the river representing the ultimate in BB tech well past the end of the age of the dreadnought, but WWII has game options out there from arcade to sim, centering the timeline around WWI and before not so much.
  6. After reading this thread I could swear I was reading about a WWII naval combat game. @Christian yes I know some of those torps were developed in the 30s or late 20s but all the combat examples refer to WWII. TBF it is not just this thread but others with posts about WWII aircraft carriers and submarines. I guess the gilded age of pre-dreads and dreadnoughts is just not that glamourous compared to sinking a BB with torps from a fast WWII DD (hello WoWs). To think I thought this game was going to be about the age of dreadnoughts, where I got that idea I don't know, silly notion. I mean let's just add in harpoons and exocets now and be done with it. Oh and let's model the HMS Queen Elizabeth too. 🙄
  7. Did you mean to say that it was more difficult to tack in a square rigged ship, or maybe when sailing in formation? Just so there is no confusion square rigged vessels did tack all the time. Now a fleet of ships of the line would often wear instead because it was easier to keep formation. I agree they should add fore & aft rigged vessels and you are correct they pointed higher or were more weatherly. You could generally get close to 45 degrees off the wind close hauled whereas a good square rigger was limited to about 65 degrees. Although for the Revolution you may not see the "Baltimore Clipper" design as those became popular later, think War of 1812 privateer like Lynx or Pride of Baltimore. Here is an example of an earlier schooner design, the Sultana:
  8. IMO I don't think they are going to go MMO sandbox with UAD. As ppl have mentioned for multiplayer think of wargames like HOI, TW, Steel Division or a number of titles by Slitherine. Another that comes to mind would be Combat Mission (a WEGO turn system) which I think would work well for UAD. Or just look at their other MP wargame, UG Gettysburg. A dev can tell me I am wrong but I don't think that MMO OW sandbox was what they had in mind with this game design or even MP at all.
  9. +1 Single player strategy game is missing from the OP poll. Look at UG:CW and UA Age of Sail for clues. That is not to say you could not have some type of MP - like UG Gettysburg. But an arena game like WoWs? Hasn't that already been done? This is a wargame/sim and I hope it stays that way.
  10. @akd Great article thanks for posting. @Pedroig What is interesting about the torpedo hits is that the hit rate is higher (40%) than the horizontal bombs (16%) but the damage done per hit is much less even given the unready state of the BB line. Obviously the anti-torpedo defenses of the ships modernized in the 1930 & 40 faired much better, but isn't that very late or past the UAD timeline?
  11. Of course I can attest to "The Admiral" as well. 😎 When I began sailing on a square rigger the captain recommended Harland, almost as required reading! Excellent resource (Seamanship in the Age of Sail).
  12. Ah yes correct. Any opinion on the model?
  13. Yes but are not some of the units companies - artillery for example? I know you posted earlier that some were erroneously marked as companies - like a grenadier company but was too large. My main point above stands though - I'll revise the scale comment to say that it is more of a battalion/regimental scale as opposed to UG:CW which is more or less brigade scale. You could take it down to company level as well, which would fit with the landing force element of the game.
  14. Well I wouldn't look at it as a regression, rather a different scale. It is a different period in history with smaller battles and as you note landing marines. Look at Bunker Hill - about 3000 troops per side so you represent smaller formations as units. Using the scale in UG:CW you would only have a couple of units for each side. They do have the opportunity to represent individual companies on the battlefield in this game which IMO is a good thing if done right.
  15. Not likely. Look at the Bunker Hill scenario - units are company or equivalent with 100-300 men. AWI battles were generally smaller as well. Units in UG:CW are essentially brigades of up to 2500 men.
  16. @Wagram I agree the figurehead certainly discounts the model as the Bucentaure. Also Bucentaure had a large doghouse on the quarterdeck.
  17. Do you mean Naval Action or Ultimate Admiral? This is the UA forum.
  18. The website timeline shows EA release in 2019. The caveat is that development timelines often get stretched. So hopefully 2019!
  19. Except that this thread is posted in the Ultimate Admiral forum. @sonnypemberton did you mean to post here or are you referring to Naval Action?
  20. No need to go outside the time line to find ships built by Eckford. His shipyard was in Sackett's Harbor during the war of 1812. He built Oneida before the war as well. A brig with a pivot gun and broadside guns. The General Pike would be a good addition and similar but smaller than the ship above. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_General_Pike_(1813)
  21. @Surcouf Did I read that she has new Captain?
  22. @adishee You have made a great point about campaigns and the necessity of conserving troops. Many if not most games whether vs. ai or player fail to get this right. I would analogize it to playing a table top miniatures game as a standalone scenario vs. playing it as part of a structured campaign. You find exactly the situation you describe - players will withdraw to conserve troops for the next battle rather than play an artificially high army morale break point.
