Poll: Port/Starboard vs Left/Right
ObiQuiet replied to ObiQuiet's topic in Current Feature Improvement Suggestions
Some more background: L. G. Carr Laughton (1928) THE WAY of a SHIP, The Mariner's Mirror, 14:2, 132-148, DOI: 10.1080/00253359.1928.10655462 http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/00253359.1928.10655462 p.136: "Mainwaring, who compiled his Seaman's Dictionary between I 6 2 o and I 6 2 2, knows both ''larboard'' and '' port,'' and wrote in what was clearly the period of transition. The origin of the term "port" is difficult, and hardly belongs to this enquiry; and it does not seem necessary to say more here than that, after continuing in limited use for two centuries, for helm orders, and as applied to the heeling of the ship or the topping of the yards, it did not fully come into its own until I 844, when it was promoted by Admiralty Order to be used for all purposes 'Vice "larboard" thereby abolished. For at least twenty years before that date "larboard" had been dropping into disuse, so that the order in fact did little more than confirm a change which had already become almost complete. " -
Poll: Port/Starboard vs Left/Right
ObiQuiet replied to ObiQuiet's topic in Current Feature Improvement Suggestions
Yes, we are. "Port" was declared the replacement for "larboard" by the RN in 1844, though of course "port" was in use before that especially for steering commands. So, I think "port" is good enough for us. -
Poll to Change the Word "Clan" to...
ObiQuiet replied to WilsonMG's topic in Current Feature Improvement Suggestions
Agreed! -
Mariners are uninterested in land forms and topography, except for identifying major coastal navigation points from the ship's point of view. IRL, soundings and bearings are what you see on nautical charts.

The usage of "fleet" for two little fleet members would be better and much more accurate as "squardron", IMO. -

For friendly nationals in the OW, when you click on them, change the "Attack" button to "Betray". -
New Laptop Graphics Probs - NA now Unplayable - Suggestions?
ObiQuiet replied to BobW-Bristol-RI-US's topic in Support
Check to see if your laptop has more than one video chipset. My 4 year old Lenovo T420 plays the game ok when I travel, but I had to make sure it used the NVIDIA NVS 4200M instead of the Intel chipset for this game. If you do find the machine has two chip sets, you may need to download the drivers for the 2nd one. In case that's NVIDIA and in case this applies to you, there is a per-program setting within the NVIDA control panel, under Manage 3D settings, then "Program Settings". -
Auto-travel from port to port
ObiQuiet replied to CeltiberoCaesar's topic in Current Feature Improvement Suggestions
For those not completely opposed to RNG factors... the players send the ships between ports, but not in the visible OW. Travel will take the same time as sailing the ship yourself. But, the game computes a risk based on the route, as a function of the enemy ports passed or perhaps the new war activity factors. Some trips would have neglible risk, even zero. Others would be very high risk, say 50/50 of arriving. Shorter hops along friendly coasts and long trips across open water would be generally safe enough to rely on, just like IRL. The ship sent this way may or may not arrive, and you may have news of their loss. -

Update on the port battle set up
ObiQuiet replied to admin's topic in Current Feature Improvement Suggestions
Good idea! Question: what is the system for giving out war-commendation-pb-tickets? Is there a possibility that that PB could be over-sold? -
Public "API" for Naval Action
ObiQuiet replied to raskolnikoff's topic in News Announcements & Important discussions
Id like to request that the port cool down date info be added to the port data feed, e.g. the seven-day cool down proposed for the June 28th update. Ideally, just add a date component to the port battle window time field. Having that data available will make both in-game and real life planning much less tedious. -

Suggestion: PVP1 Fight Zone
ObiQuiet replied to AfkSailor's topic in Current Feature Improvement Suggestions
Excellent idea; been thinking along the same lines myself. Let's try it out. I added three "PvP Zones" to the map here. Spread the word, and let me know how to adjust it. -
FWIW, the OED has citations before 1815, see def b which is for the nautical usages: http://www.oed.com/view/Entry/149156?redirectedFrom=powder+monkey#eid The citations in (a) seem to me to be more likely based on powdered wigs, than gunpowder. See also the Google n-gram chart which is sort-of-interesting for data of this age, but questionable given the sparse data set before 1900, though there is a definite up-tick in 1870's. (Might be wise to check the alternative spellings and upper-lower case forms) And, a list of book results before 1820.

Just abandoned the WRONG outpost

The prompt could say "Lose these 5 ships (list) and $12344 of goods... [ok][cancel] ". It is a decent ux design that reduces the accident rate compared to simple ok/cancel messages with generic text. -
[PvP1] Map: Where and When to Attack Pirate Ports
ObiQuiet replied to ObiQuiet's topic in National news
Yes, there is a multi-nation version for PVP1 at tdamap.com/bybb.html If there is enough interest, I will add the other servers as option too. First priority though is to add our navigation tools to this map, to update the original TDA map, making it much faster. -
