  1. I went looking on some forums of the 3D modeling community, to maybe find some people who would love to make ship models for NA and I found quite a few completed models of ships that would fit our era... except they looked like total rubbish. Made me appreciate the fine work NA has done already.
  2. Agreed, stuff like this is cringeworthy and we will be seeing it within the first week if there isn't some regulation on it. And this is coming from the guy (me) who is pretty consistent about being a proponent of letting the community and the (correct) physics of guns and ships sort themselves out. I'm generally anti-magic, anti-punitive dev measures, anti-big brother etc. Some things do need a little oversight though.
  3. I would like the names to be developer approved, otherwise we will end up with 'DJ jAzZy BlAcKBeard's Fresh Pirate boat'. Oh yes that will happen.
  4. Self-imposed 'rules of engagement' I had a PvP where I was a Bellona with a Surprise and we fought a Trincomalee, a Surprise, a Brig and a Cutter. The person in the Trin fired a few broadsides and was hit maybe 2x and then he started sailing towards the ring, told his teammates he'd 'brb', they asked why, he said there was no point in fighting anymore as they would lose. I asked him a few minutes later why he was doing that and then he said 'well my rudder is gone'. That wasn't true by any means, he'd never even used his repairs and had already ran off admitting he was running. So next match I joined a PvP and there he is, no one else would join PVP so it ended up being me and him. This time I was in a Victory and he was in the Trincomalee again. He ran the entire match. I tried my best to get him to fight. He said he 'only fights frigates' and then went on about he was testing for 'speed bugs'. I have only ever seen one other person run from a bigger ship and that was awhile back and he doesn't do it anymore. I managed to get a broadside of chain on him, but then he repaired sails and went straight for the ring. I'm not naming him to start anything, but I videoed the whole thing just in case. This is sea trials, people, fight. Period. No one signs on to adhere to your RoE's and whims, be a man, be courteous and fight. I love being outmatched and having the chance of pulling off an upset, it's a great feeling. I cannot comprehend running from people in a trial version of a video game while typing the most convoluted reasons why you are doing it.
  5. I would like there to be a dev approved custom flag system. At Decatur Armada we are currently working on some squadron flags using period American symbols and imagery, for internal use, but it would be nice to one day see them flown not as a main rear flag, but as a secondary flag, banner or streamer.
  6. A Centenary Salute to Patrick O’Brian Toasting the master who commanded all things nautical in the Aubrey-Maturin fiction series. http://www.wsj.com/articles/jamie-malanowski-a-centenary-salute-to-patrick-obrian-1418343095
  7. The thread is about tacking so I would prefer it not be condensed, I'm not in a rush I find the conversation they are having fascinating and that's coming from an army man and not a navy man, so I really don't have anything to add to it, but it makes me want to learn more. My knowledge base is historical accounts and those are solely accounts of combat, not tacking, braces, shrouds and yards, but that is all a part of it and I'd love to see sailing a smidgen harder and a smidgen more realistic. I don't think it's fair that every time someone starts talking about more realism that they get caricatured into a person who wants a boring hardcore sim. I think the game is damn near perfect, but I wouldn't mind having a bit more realism in the sail controls, even if that requires learning more about how sails and wind work. I currently enjoy out-sailing the auto-skipper crowd as it is, but I played at least 20 matches before I ever tried manual and I wouldn't mind another small learning curve if the sailing were to ever be fleshed out more. I don't see them taking away auto-skipper, so I don't think anyone who wants it needs to worry. If Assassins Creed sailing is 1 on the scale and 10 is a mind numbing sailing sim, let's say NA is about 5 right now, maybe even a 4. I think there are a lot more people who would like to see a 6 rather than a 3 or 4. That's not asking for much.
  8. Yeah I F11'd that awhile back, had people 2 km away from me telling me it wasn't so.
  9. Well, I don't know either, you're a good sailor, that's why you got an invite
  10. I really don't remember at this point haha, there were 3 games in a row where I lost 2-3 masts and that was 50 games ago or so for me. I will say I'm quite proud of defeating a Vic and Surprise and a Yacht that same day while I had a 1/4 of my mizzen mast as my only means of locomotion, but NA don't you get the wrong idea now I do remember taking that screen shot (in the other thread) right after I got hit and lost a mast, the first shots I received that specific game, where you were more to my 11 o'clock position and the hit I took was from my 8 o'clock and was a smaller ship, that's all I remember. I don't know if they've tweaked it silently or not, but I haven't had such a run of bad luck since and I'm not seeing as many masts falling when I'm shooting, so either I had a coincidence of my masts getting hit and me hitting masts in a short period of time (stranger things have happened) or somethings been changed.
  11. It is fight till you sink in the sea trials because it is about hunting for bugs. There is no reason or mechanism to surrender right now, but this should change in the full release. There are some discussions going on about this in other threads, but pointing out historical realities is very welcome on the forums, good job.
  12. I didn't want to make a new thread for this, so I'll put it here. I'm not going to name the person because he's a polite player I've played with a lot and after I pointed the following out, he agreed it was a bad idea. Towards the end of a match I started getting blasted by a teammate, I asked him what he was doing and he said getting some damage in before the game ends. I told him to not do that again because then everyone will start doing it, and then they will start doing it earlier and earlier in the game and then there will be a huge stink. However, if I see anyone else doing this, your name will go here. I'm not talking about friendly fire or accidentally lag ramming someone etc, I'm talking about intentionally blasting your teammate to get damage points. That is cheating and the devs already had to do a big patch to fix the problem. The devs could fix this by not allowing damage for friendly hits, but I don't think that needs to be done, NA overall seems to have a good set of players and I think we can police ourselves and not force the dev to waste valuable time trying to stop more cheating. If anyone sees this happening, say something. That is all
  13. Scotland was amazing. The highlands especially, the Glencoe hike I did was spiritual. I saw sun, rain, sleet and snow all in one day. And sheep. And a Stag. And the RAF buzzed by while I was climbing Ben Nevis and nearly made me shat my trousers. Edinburgh was beautiful and fun. Glasgow... well Glasgow was like Detroit here in the States, it has it's special charm haha.
  14. Welcome ETF, you're going to love it.
  15. i just passed through Glasgow once, spending about 8 hrs, on my way to Ft. William and the highlands, spent 4 days in Edinburgh however.
  16. Well for me, I still feel like the HP could be tweaked a little more, especially if somewhere between 1 and 8 chains can bring down a mast the size of the Victory's and a total of 4 masts can be brought down in under 3 minutes from medium range. So something is going on here, the masts needs more HP, relative to size, or there needs to be something done with dispersion as too many balls are finding wood when there is 1000x more cubic feet of air than wood at that height above the deck. Should that chain have done damage to my spars and sails? Absolutely. I'd rather have seen me lose control of my yardarms or lose one whole sail off that mast or something other than the whole mast falling to 1-8 chain balls. Maybe it's just a matter of fleshing the damage model out some. Just last night I turned and fired my first broadside at an AI Trincomalee from about 400 yds, 2 masts fell. The round shot's actual damage on the mast is fine, but the hit rate at range is far too high and chain at least needs some sort of damage caveat when hitting. Absolutely round shot was murderous on masts, but extremely hard to hit, subject to deflection and skimming unless dead on and pure golden chance from anywhere but the closest of ranges. "The hole in the mast passes cleanly through at the thickest part of the timber – about 80cm. It was probably caused by an 18pdr gun fired from the lower deck of the French ship Redoubtable at knife range."
  17. So the Decatur Armada must've grabbed you after the Battle of Tripoli Harbor, where two Swedish frigates joined the USS Boston in defeating 7 Barbary corsairs
  18. Did you just ask me if I realize that the USS Constitution and the USS United States are not ships?
  19. Thanks for clarifying, so 8 chain shot bringing down my entire Victory mast. Well, I know where all my broadsides of chain are going now
  20. A 32lb'er has twice the range as a 12lb'er at maximum elevation, thus once the ranges are tweaked to be more accurate, that'll change the dynamic of a light frigate wanting to sit on the leeward and try to duel a ship of the line. However let me add that at those ranges, neither ship would be often hitting the broadside of a barn... or a ship.
  21. I'm not exactly sure how to read that, but I only counted the word mast 5 times, what does the number that follows mast mean? So I see 7 entries for hits, but 2 of those are sail only, the 3rd and the 6th.
