  1. Just discovered this project, this is fantastic and it looks amazing. For the past year and a half I have been researching and working on a historical fiction novel set during Red Cloud's War 1866-1868, the only war the US Army ever signed a treaty of defeat and relinquished land back to the natives,. They were driven out of the Powder River country by the Northern Cheyenne and Oglala, Brule and Minneconjou Sioux and abandoned the three recently built forts along the Bozeman Trail, Fort C.F. Smith, Fort Phil Kearny and Fort Reno. (picture below is of the Northern Cheyenne chief Little Wolf burning Fort Phil Kearny) I would love to help with any historical research if the game is indeed going to have a historical setting. These are the current books I own and I have many published research papers on the Indian Wars of the 1860's and '70's. You guys just uncannily seem to know what I like 😂 Indian Wars Research Books
  2. You cheated, you got caught due to your own stupidity. Let's all take a moment and laugh at these idiots. Don't let the door hit you in the ass.
  3. Ping on the US west coast is low, 150 and lower, half that in some east coast locations. As long as you are not over 300 you will see no difference in a game like NA. Only the Aussies have ping issues. This has been true since 2014, in fact ping is lower overall now than then and there were no issues then. The 'global' server will be the North American players, they will be forced onto this server by the port timers of the EU server, unless they don't care about RVR. So the 'global' server will have a few hundred players, 50% will play as the US and 49% as pirates and 1% as the remaining nations. It will have daily numbers similar to what we have now in no time. Then many of the players will migrate to the EU server just to have pvp, but will have to be pirates because of the timers on ports (unless they stay up all night). The whole thing is a disaster waiting to happen. All because port battles have become the focus of Naval Action. Naval Action should be about open sea action, not port battles, but that's what it has become. Solution? One global pvp server for everyone, port battles only on weekends and with a 12 hour free for all window, all time zones can get in, most points wins. (I'd even prefer one weekend a month.) The rest of the time will be a high population server with lots of pvp.
  4. If we want to get historical and technical, Traders Brigs cannot, no matter the load, outrun frigates. Trade ships also ran skeleton crews to cut down on costs. This is why trade ships often traveled together with escort. American brigs and fore/aft vessels took millions of tons of commerce and nearly all of it from larger vessels. Brigs took many Indiamen. The large American frigates caught brigs, schooners and anything else they wanted. The speed bonus to trade ships in this game is a 'balance' addition and it hurts the game. The President ran down the Belvidera and was overtaking her until she dumped 14 tons of water.
  5. I think the time has come. I have not played in sometime, I got on the test bed today and spent time chasing a couple of humans, a Traders Brig, a couple of Gros Ventres. I was in a Surprise and naturally they left me far behind. It brought back the feeling I had when I stopped playing, it isn't a good feeling. Another player mentioned in global (is this why it's going away?) and I agreed, for what ever number you assign to cannon weight for affecting speed, assign that effect to the equivalent weight for what is in your hold. 100 tons should affect your speed the same, whether it's 100 tons of cannon or coal or cotton or fish.
  6. Happy Birthday Yankee Jack!

  7. Yeah I noticed that awhile back too, and that the Agamemnon has a thicker mast than a 3rd rate. Real life measurments: Dragon 74 gun, launched 1798, 207 tons bigger than the Bellona, main mast diameter: 36 inches Constitution main mast diameter: 36 inches Unicorn (Leda Class frigate): 28 inches
  8. I have done a lot of research on ship constructions, the woods used, the thicknesses of frames and planks, and have used these to make suggestions and proposals to the dev team. However since most of the good information of Spanish ships is in Spanish, I have very little. I have some things on frame spacing on a few of 74s and 112 gun ships, but not much else. I have read where the Santisima was built of Cuban Mahogany (it was one of my proposals that brought the wood into the game- though it is not in the right place in the wood tier haha, oh well) but there is also several accounts of her being built of Cuban Cedar. I have a hard time seeing her frames being made of cedar and the Cuban variety is a bit small for that, but I could be wrong. What is known about her scantlings? List sources if you have them as age of sail dimensions are notoriously unreliable and once one author publishes 'Ship X was Y inches thick at the waterline' then 10 other authors over the next 50 years just repeat that number and it turns out to be wrong when you find a original source document.
  9. I've seen a Surprise with reinforced masts endure all the charge and double a Constitution had, all within 200m, get down to 54% by that alone and not lose a mast, so this buff is just going to murder the art of demasting. It's age of sail game, 90% of historical ship engagements involved a lost mast. Spars and rigging should be repairable, but not a mast during combat. Rigging shock should be much more frequent, but permanent yard and rigging damage could be undone by shifting men to repair (but that's a whole other proposal on free form crew sliders). Also could we get some dismantling shot variety
  10. Very cool. TDA has been using Google's drawing app for over a year, we have tons of battle diagrams, template ships, icons for fire, wind, turns etc, for training, it allows multiple people to use it at once just like Google docs etc. An example of a tactic made with google from the old Sea Trial days.
  11. I've proposed this in the past and while it does not equal pure pvp it is indeed must content to any age of sail game. I think the port production and resource availability would need to be tied to these convoys as an incentive to attack and defend as well. Stop a large shipment carrying 100,000 Oak to a capital port and that port is low or out of that resource until the next convoy. (This will only work once resources are regionally accurate.) The AI ships within the fleets would not engage in the battle (AI is annoying in battle anyway) but rather would run like traders do and the fight would be between the players. Players could screen ahead, shadow alongside, etc. Defending team should get a heads up on the heading and time of departure. Read or listen to the description of the cat and mouse of France attempting to escort a huge convoy of trade ships to France from the Caribbean and the British doing their best to catch them. Weeks of searching, feigning and dodging until they found them. https://mobile.audible.com/pd/History/Broadsides-The-Age-of-Fighting-Sail-1775-1815-Audiobook/B00JJ5X8OW Large convoys of trade ships should be a part of any age of sail. However it should happen just enough to be important but not become annoyingly frequent (Port battles) that people begrudgingly take part.
  12. Excellent. I would like for the tournament to be postponed, primarily because summer is a bad time for a lot of us, TDA was hoping to field a team or two of veterans, but we are all too busy to take part and even our team of newer members are having a hard time getting together to practice. Either way, the changes to the small battles are very welcome.
  13. Well the Spanish would have been subjects to the US and the British several times over already. What fun would that be for the victors anyway? That proposal is a no go, total disaster waiting to happen. I would even go so far as to say that not only should a capital be uncapturable, every nation should have one small region safe from conquest. Also switching nations is far too easy and is being exploited, this affects diplomacy. If you want to switch nations, you can but you will lose two full ranks and 20 ranks of crafting. If your mates join the game and they really want to play as the Dutch but you're already Swedish, you can switch and take the hit, if it is truly worth it you'll get over it and they can help you grind up, yet this would dead stop all the back and forth swapping.
  14. TDA has a 3rd team joining, names will be posted soon.
  15. As you older members know I have never held back giving my opinion on what is wrong or should be changed with this game, but the fine balance between size, epicness and playablility is just about right. It should be left alone. The only thing I think that could be further improved upon is the buoyancy if possible and visual things like draw distances of ships and fluttering flags on the jacks etc. It would hurt the world to be smaller. Besides if we hit the 2-3,000 player population consistently on full release we would be cramped and it wouldn't feel like a vast open world anymore. Probably should put this in suggestions but my dream is to one day have perpetually open instances along the coasts and in deep sea areas, size based on activity level, where the 50 ship limit could even still be in effect. Even on the busiest nights of hunting pirates between Tortue and Mortimer, there is never more that 15-20 ships in that zone. So you could have a battle going on out of sight of two other ships fishing and have some trade ships sailing by within spyglass range etc. An open instance that allows for true organic sandbox play. A short loading screen transition between instances would be a small price to pay for that. Distances could be shrunk in the instance so the time to travel from port A to B is the same as it is now in OW (pretty close as it is anyway) Zones would be something like this and the large scale (ignore the gaps) And then within that large instance you could have this going on
  16. Well I'll be damned, this might actually work. Let's just make sure this doesn't become Port Action, those should be hyper-expensive (requiring dozens of players donating over time to a flag fund), somewhat rare and 48 hour long (weekends only) open battles type of thing that are un-recapturable for like a month. With this proposed alliance system and a fleshed out economy, we could have some fun zone patrolling, commerce raiding and commerce escorting going on on the open seas.
  17. Half the fun for me is doing the conversions of Sails of Glory ships. I'm currently doing the Essex. I was playing complex historical board games when I was younger because pac-man and Donkey Kong did nothing for me and I've gotten back into it the last few years. Here is the Constitution, Defence, Aquilon and Unite conversions I did, cutting away the excess sail and mast pieces, giving it a canvas wash, while adding rigging and motion bases. A couple of cotton balls and paint makes better cannon fire too. I didn't buy the SoG mat, I just grabbed a green one rolled up in a tube at a hobby store and spray painted it blue with flecks of white here and there, you don't need any directional references on the mat with the way the SoG rules work, just the compass that comes with it and the the range ruler. 2-3 hours per ship, or you can buy them from here http://modeljship.com/es/25-sail-of-glory-ships-11000 starting at 150 Euros haha. They look better than homemade, but I'd never pay that when it's relaxing and enjoyable to do them yourself anyway.
  18. Last year, long before early access, TDA and SLRN were the big rivals in the game and we would have fun 'poster wars' and generally some good banter.
  19. Thank you for taking the time to check it out, I enjoyed making it.
  20. I created a story map on arcgis.com detailing the 17 pivotal naval duels of the War of 1812. They are in chronological order and there is a painting and description of the action on each point. Some of the major actions have 2-4 slides to adequately tell the story. Each slide takes you to a point that is located accurately based on the lat/long given in the captains logs. Scroll over the text box to read the entire descriptions and you can click on the arrows to enlarge the painting behind it. For descriptions of the actions I rely on the tome of unrivaled research that is Teddy Roosevelt's The Naval War of 1812 which was published in 1882. The slides tell a story and as you move along you can see the war unfold, getting a sense of the ebbs and flows of the weeks and months of the conflict. The final slide is an overview plotting an overview of the battles and is not currently working properly (you cannot expand the embedded map to full size) due to a technical issue with this storymap format, so I have posted what you should see on that final slide in the spoiler. Enjoy. Naval Duels of the War of 1812
  21. Look, I know how the mod teams works and you do have a little more influence than the average player, simply because you chat with admin about every day, that's normal, but I am not blaming you for this state of affairs if anyone reading is wondering. I just responded to your PM. If anyone misread that as a personal attack on Bungee it was not. It was a full broadside at this biased and flawed implementation of what could be a great system. Also that adhering to real facts doesn't break the game with one ship, but does with another is also, as you might imagine, flawed. Was the game broken last patch when everyone was happy with the Constitutions HP?
  22. Wow. Not surprised though to be honest. And that is why I now support the Santisima fans, they are victims of the same unfounded bias as everyone else. You can't tell one ship, 'screw you because FACTS' and another ship 'screw you because WE SAID SO'. This is the same attitude that had me quit the moderator team, I see not much has changed after my 6 month break. This whole frame spacing concept was mine to begin with, the research was mine, the hit points proposal I did with Alex and Cunningham and the 3 PDF research papers I've done can justify using frame spacing better than what you just posted or anything I've seen anyone else post, I was the one who used the Victory and Santisima as the example in the HP proposal! This is like the twilight zone. Until it is implemented equally and fairly the 'system' that is being used has no credibility whatsoever, because it isn't a system, so anything and everything about it can be challenged and I will support every single challenge. If you don't apply the same rules to EVERY SHIP nothing is valid, nothing can be defended. The very second formulas that are drawn from the actual measurements are implemented from the Ocean class down to the gunboats, the hit points and thicknesses become unassailable and can stand up to any criticism, you can't argue against facts, you know, just like you told the Santi supporters, but right now there ain't no damn 'facts'. You guys are either still making the elementary mistake of confusing gun count and 'rate' with real measurements and scantlings or you are just acting out personal biases in a game while claiming realism. You know I came back here with a positive attitude, I came back with a 'water under the bridge' let's move forward attitude, but I see it's the same ol round and round. Why the pretense of using facts? I'd be insulted if I was one of these Spanish gentlemen, I sure do hope they read this. Just come out and say 'we will make the ships perform how we want them to', you'll at least get props for being honest.
