I could of course go for the 1st rater, sailing and fighting on the Victory should be the goal of all RN Captains...however the idea of Sailing in Nelson favourite, HMS Agamemnon is my goal. this plucky little ship help forced the mighty Santisima Trinidad to Surrender at the battle of Trafalgar..all 140 guns of her!

Yup. Him and other two were required to force a surrender, and it only happened when she was demasted and terribly shot up. So bad that she foundered when under tow later, because of a storm ;). Nothing wrong with striking colors in a 3v1 after giving everything possible :)

She Sir! Never Him... ships are always referred to as She! Yes she (the Aga) did have help ;) but none-the-less the ST was the pride of the Spanish navy her size in my opinion her down fall!

I'd say her downfall was her inexperienced crew and the poor tactics by Villeneuve, not to mention the lack of important innovations such as the gunlock (can only imagine what that would've meant for the British as they approached to cut the line).

Not to be that guy but, I do have to say that i feel having more then a handful of different merchantmen ships is a must, my reason for saying this is mainly i would like to able to do escort/transport/pirating "missions" (for lack of a better term) for let say the East India company, Britannia, ETC.

Long time website checker, first time poster. While I am looking forward to the combat portions of the game, I'm most intrigued by the potential to make a name outside of the large fleet actions. I'd love to be able to 'trick' out a schooner for speed and spend an hour trying to dodge and hide from pirates and enemy company/country ships all the while bringing in a nice profit for my home port.

Voted for 32-38 gun fifth rate and 46-60 gun fourth rate. Its a sweet spot for me. I just love frigates. Perfect blend of firepower, maneuverability and speed. I'm sure that it will be "affordable" in open world when in comes. Bigger ones while powerful could just cost to much and be delegated for "fleet" jobs only.

Similar thing like in EvE, where I hate sitting in dock in supercapital and I love small scale PvP where skill of player can make the most difference.

I have generally always been intrigued by 4th rate ships with 44-56 guns and two gun decks mostly because they seem to be a jack of all trade usually spiting firepower, speed, agility and durability pretty equally.  Heavy Frigates also have some appeal.  Also have been partial to the very small, but powerful Corvettes and Frigates like the Rattlesnake.

Roughly speaking a 3rd rate should be faster than a 4th, given they will have similar hull forms and as maturin says the bigger ship is normally quicker.

Some 3rd rates can be very big indeed, the French 80s like the Tonnant and Buccentaur are slightly longer and wider than the Victory.

Probably a 4th rate will still outrun a 1st or 2nd, and they do have good firepower, 24lbers and 12lbers, enough to overwhelm any frigate short of something like the Constitution. Also, 4th rates can operate in waters normally reserved for frigates.

We need some wind variation to give smaller ships a chance.

I must say that you are wrong in your first statemant it is not in all true.

That would meen that the 1st rate is faster then 3rd rate because its a bigger ship wich is not true.

Frigates where the fastest ships when it is top speed in mention.

I did not try the game personaly but i watched alot of videos and streams and what i saw as a spectator i can say that curently in game the fastest and ships that have the fastest acceleration are Frigates like Trin and Connie wich is semi true , why ? well altho frigates where the fastest ships around considering tops speeds that boat could reach they where not the fastest in acceleration when it comes to acceleration in general the smaller ship is faster then the big ship.

I did cover that. 3rd rates and 4th rates are both 2 deckers, they have similar hullforms. If you have similar hullforms the bigger ship is generally quicker. 1st and 2nd rates are 3 deckers and have heavier hullforms (more displacement relative to length and breadth), because of this the 3rd rates are often faster despite the differences in length.

Frigates have fine hullforms (good length to beam ratio and low displacement for their length/breadth), that makes them fast despite being smaller than ships of the line. Normally frigates will outrun SoL but not always, there were multiple occasions where a SoL (usually a 3rd rate) ran down and captured a frigate, and the fastest SoLs had top speeds in the 11kts + range, which is faster than some frigates.
