  1. The moaning all comes from hard core PVP'ers who ask why don't they use the PVE server and its been answered a million times. Many (if not most) players want both. The PVE server is boring. Maybe you should stop telling other players how to play their game. I do actually agree with you that a new player should start on the PVE server just to learn the game. I did that and it took me about a week before I wanted more than the PVE server had to offer.
  2. What?? I just assumed that Russia, Prussia and Poland had a stronger seafaring tradition that Portugal because of their prominence in this game!
  3. There were only 3 of the Blackwood novels, right? I remember wishing for more
  4. I read a lot in the other threads about Jack Aubrey and Richard Bolitho. Hornblower gets some love as well, but nobody references Alan Lewrie. This is a series of 19(?) books starting with him as a Midshipman and for me, the best (bar none) naval adventure series. It has a blend of racy humour and highly technical sailing/combat that should appeal to every player of this game and the Devs should be using it as a text!. For all of you who have not experienced this series, I suggest you start immediately. The first book is "The Kings Coat", written by Dewie Lambden.
  5. Good. They have to have weaknesses to balance their strengths.
  6. I believe the 2 pounder can shoot "Fire Arrows" (barbed and coated in flammable material and used to set fire to sails). Something a Xebec might carry...
  7. All the controls are the same. The perspective gives you some challenges with regard to visibility. Waves will block your view quite often and landmarks are tougher to pick out. The invisible sails are still visible, so it's really like looking through gauze. It's also a lot easier for an enemy to get close to you, so I would make a point of raising your perspective periodically for an "all round look".
  8. You can have a deck perspective. I quite enjoy bounding along in my Prince at deck level. It even gives you a feeling that there is a horizon.

Not so. Re-doing the tutorial should give everyone M&C rank and some decent ships. You should be PVPing within a couple of hours.

It's interesting that the thread has turned here. I personally would not care if we all ended up in basic cutters with zero gold. It is my understanding with regard to the tutorial, that if you start your character over again, you do not get the rewards from the tutorial as it is tied to your account, not your character. Would a full wipe reset this aspect? I would be happy to jump through the Tutorial hoop again if I could get all those nice repairs and other goodies

Best wishes to your Grandma. Plenty of concerns/issues on the forum! have a good read!
  12. That's not the case now. I built my first ship the other day and I found it tedious. I would far rather own a shipbuilder in my shipyard who tells me what raw materials I need and then supplies me with a finished ship. I don't want to have to craft raw iron into an ingot, then a fitting then something else. THEN take a log and .....
  13. Sounds like you need more stuff, not less. There are a multitude of items needed to build a ship and many separate industries which contribute to it (too much to list!). Frankly I'd be all for it if it meant more ships at sea (outside of reinforcement zone).
  14. So trading without risks? If we cant be bothered doing the long sailing between trade ports, (and sometimes I hate it too), lets have an autopilot. Send your ship on its way as an AI and accepts the risks that come with it. Then we can get on with other stuff and hope that our ship makes it. Hunters can tell if its a player owned AI or NPC. Reduced PVP marks for a player owned AI trader. The fact is, Traders shouldn't be immune to attack by using a "Tow" function.
  15. Sounds like DD is doing its job and giving us realism. Historically, most boardings were successful only when the target was helpless and outnumbered. That's realistic. This meta of ramming a perfectly healthy ship and pushing it into the wing then boarding with all your mods has become a habit in this game and is nowhere near realistic. People who practice this tactic hate DD. Winning with mods is garbage.
  16. But the OW has to be there for us to hunt each other. I don't just want a portal to combat. There is a thrill to hunting the prey and a thrill in sneaking a trader past the wolves. I agree that OW can be improved with some content, but I also believe that it should remain time compressed to lessen the pain of the long journeys. That goes against your wish for the realistic sailing attributes. We need a way to give content to OW without making it painfully long.
  17. Wow, I've never actually seen sarcasm that drips...well played sir!
  18. The realistic sailing that is advertised does not specify OW and the sailing in battle instances is more complex (granted still not to your standards)
  19. I don't disagree with anything you have said, but the reality is that most people on this game don't want to spend their hours actually doing the work of sailing between two ports. That's a sailing Sim. As I said, an options menu with different difficulty settings for OW is the answer IMHO. Much like what we had in Silent hunter (im actually a submariner and setting up a shot using the historical model was a big kick for me). The level of difficulty that you have suggested would be max, and perhaps you would get more xp for accomplishing a journey at that level.
  20. I believe you are asking for additions that would please a small niche (in an already niche game). OW sailing for most of us is a means to an end (combat, trading, etc). Your proposals are very interesting and I would probably enjoy them for a period of time, but I don't think I would want to do it all the time. Most times I just want to get there! Similar proposals have come out from the hard core sailing school and while they are attractive to a few, the majority would hate them. I think this kind of thing, if it ever gets instituted, should be selectable from an options menu.
  21. And void yourself while hanging from a tree branch over water.
  22. Last night I tagged a guy. He was probably AFK sailing as he never altered from me sighting him till the tag. He should have gotten some warning from his look out! Sure, I may have caught him anyway, but there would have been more content for us both had he been able to evade.
  23. You could also buy/earn/capture Rutters, which would open new features/ports
