  1. A very beautiful ship. It would be interesting to see more ships of older design in-game. My only worry is that they suffer from the blight of being too high out of the water for its own good. That is, presenting too large a target and not having the firepower or armour to make up for it.
  2. Actually, Marines on Royal Navy ships were often used as manual labour to set and strike the sails of the mizzenmast, as well as operate the halliards and other bits of rigging component to said mast and its sails (mainly because it was the most simple mast to operate, and the officers could trust even Marines not to balls that up). While it wouldn't be accurate to let them near the cannons, it's perfectly fit to expect them to haul ropes and set sails.
  3. The main issue I take with that line of thought is that unless they are held at a nation's capital, your goods should never be safe. Life is a cold, hard b████. It should always be possible for one to become a victim of circumstances outside of their control. If you want to make it, you need to be open to the possibility of losing what you have to someone craftier, cannier, or less honourably inclined. Perhaps to temper this, it could be taken into consideration that the rushed and urgent nature of a raid would mean that it's unlikely the attacking vessels would have the time or resources to clean the port out of its wealth entirely, or even majorly, but losses should still be incurred!
  4. It's nice to see an old face from PotBS doing well in NA. Best wishes for SGS in the new year!
  5. I was always on the offense in those instances so I probably have kinder memories of it. The flag system definitely needs to stay dead, but a mechanic wherein surprise attacks on ports are possible would be nice.
  6. The flag system was about as realistic as tits on a fish, but it was fun because it added an element of surprise to things. You had no idea whether you actually had an enemy fleet coming or if it was just a diversion, or even if it was more than a joke being played by someone with a lot of time and money on their hands. The surprise attack mechanic was nice. The slow buildup of contention and announcement of a port battle may allow for more time to prepare, but it just doesn't feel right. Nations should be able to launch surprise attacks WITHIN CERTAIN TIME WINDOWS.
  7. The SLRN would like to wish everyone a happy new year! We hope that if you intend to party tonight, you do not drink as heavily as I'm planning to.
  8. Not better prizes, simply more necessary items than overpriced fingerpaints. If the prizes consisted of things NEEDED rather than simply COVETED, more people might attend the events than the gankers and people looking for a fancy new ship, or indeed paint for their current one.
  9. I can't agree more with this. Fix the current issues before creating more potential new ones.
  10. I think the PvP events might be the devs' attempt at luring more people into combat. IMO they're going to need to offer better prizes to really see larger crowds of people attend these events. Maybe something integral to crafting, or a nice ship itself as the prize.
  11. Used to be SGS back before PotBS really started stagnating, some of the most fun I've ever had, and many great memories. Good luck to you in Naval Action! I look forward to sailing beside you fine gents.
  12. Because the sovereign territory of the crown, that is, Jamaica, is under threat from three possible direct avenues of attack. If we forsook those waterways to play the same overextended empire game that Spain has been forced into (and we've seen how well a nation can hold too many ports with too few ships), new British players would be ganked and seal clubbed by pirates and Danes within sight of Jamaica. There may very well come a time when the historical sovereign territories of HM the King become tactically advantageous again, unfortunately this is not it. There is no need to rush. We have a long map ahead of us, and it's important that our home waters are an impenetrable stronghold before we worry about the borders of the map.
  13. His clan can't hold the Antilles from the French and Swedish. SLRN are preoccupied defending the Haitian Bay from two separate enemies. We have politely declined to spend time taking ports in the Antilles, as it's tactically untenable at the moment, the gentleman OP, rather than cut his losses and explore alternative strategic options, has decided instead to take shots at Caldwell on the forums for not bailing them out and defending his port grabs for him. I'm unsure what the gentleman hopes to accomplish, but what was amusing at first is now quite stale. You cannot defend ports when you do not have the adequate firepower, you cannot expect SLRN, BWITC, and AUSEZ to bail you out when we're fighting our own enemies, and constant veiled insults on the forums won't make us change our minds. Please grow up and stop acting like children. We would gladly fight beside you in the theaters of war that are strategically important, but the Antilles is simply too extended and indefensible to be of pressing importance at the moment.
  14. I personally would rather have months go into stress testing these ships to ensure that they're as perfect as they can be for such a high-detail game than a large quantity of mass produced ships that may lack in quality. We'll have out many varieties of vessels sooner or later.
  15. That's a very nice poem, sir, but it does not change the fact that the rules of expansion have clearly shown that one's authority to lay claim on territory begins and ends with their firepower. You simply cannot expect to take and hold islands when you cannot muster the numbers to defend them. The Kingston area is our home. It is where our new players set out from, it is where our centre of power is as a nation. Not the Antilles. Please do not take surprise or offense when the majority of the British nation reads the tactical situation correctly and fortifies our home waters from ever encroaching enemies.
  16. Although it is perhaps not exceedingly easy in a basic cutter, alternatives to missions do exist. Post-wipe, intrepid players will be boarding much larger ships and working up that way, crafters will be churning out rank-appropriate vessels and selling them, and things will normalize very quickly.
  17. The difference is that we don't beat about the bush or attach fancy names to it in some hope that it appears more justified, we just come and hold you down while rifling through your pockets for territory and valuables.
  18. Though I've only sailed with you gentlemen once (the engagement outside of Higuey), I count myself fortunate. A fine group of players.
  19. Nice to see new and promising guilds opening up. Good luck!
  20. There will always be advantages and disadvantages to trade ships of different builds. As fast and well armed as a vessel is, the crews were rarely as well trained as naval gunners, so if I were hauling something past Mortimer Town I'd rather it be in a speed-rigged lynx that can definitely outpace my hunters instead of a moderately armed vessel that can maybe outgun them. We'll find out for sure how it fits into things when we see it in-game, but we'll likely not have to worry about it being supreme in all characteristics.
