  1. I have always referred to it as larboard (suppose i spent too much time sifting through 18th century letters and battle reports). I know that it is now port but I have just always enjoyed larboard. Mind you that being said I have been told that I sound like an 18th century toff so I suppose it is rather fitting.
  2. You are quite right that a letter was sent via Nelson and it was definitely a ruse that won the Battle. Essentially he said that he could not ensure the safety of the Danish prisoners and would burn their fleet without the ability to free those incarcerated in their blockships. The truth was that the British fleet had virtually exhausted its ammunition and its warships were in a very sorry state. The Danish fell for the ruse and the Battle ceased. The glass to his blind eye has never been proven and many have noted it as a myth, there were letters/diaries though that stated that he made a reference to being blind sometimes and did not see the signal; however raising the glass to his blind eye most likely did not happen. There are some great books on the subject and I would certainly encourage reading through both the literature of the Battle and letters/diary entries of those who were present.
  3. It does not change your in game name. They have stated that a function shall be brought in but changing one has no impact on the other currently.

    POTBS

It's a shame that this game has fallen from grace. Funny to see Crestsilver make a post here as he is the only person I know who clicked into a port battle and made 23 others click out lol.
  5. I chose my name Lord Hood, Samuel Hood in game ( as the devs have mentioned that you can gain titles and Lord Lord Hood would have sounded ridiculous lol) due to the fact that he is my ancestor so I have always been proud of the name. I am not role playing although am not adverse to the idea (turns out that I share a few of his traits so the family tells me, both good and bad apparently lol).
  6. I am used to using the terms of the day (largely in part to my study of the time) and so use larboard as opposed to port as would have been done. It seems to have confused some of the captains that I have sailed with so I'm glad that you have posted the terms of the day
  7. Copenhagen was a difficult battle largely in part to a Commander in Chiefs inability to be decisive on the spot due to how he interpreted his orders from the Admiralty. If this type of battle is included within the game then it would only be such a difficult fight because the attacking fleet did so too late. Hyde Parker delayed the initial attack and had it been given the go ahead then the Danish were in no position to answer and there would have been virtually no contest. Parkers delay gave the Danish substantial time to set up their block ships and arrange crews (even undermanned ones) for them. Of course it is easy for us now to judge Parkers inaction as we have the ability to see the consequences. If you ever get a chance to read Nelsons and Parkers correspondence though it makes for great reading/insight.
  8. I think that it could be included in the game as a choice for that particular Captain. I don't think that it should impact the crew though. I suppose that you could have a faith rating for your Captain but that shouldn't necessarily inspire or detract from your crew dependent on it. I feel relatively certain that if I offered my crew a tankard of grog over a verse they would be equally as inspired (this is coming from an Englishman so obviously alcohol has to play a part). The issue with this impacting crew is that there were multiple things that did. For instance Edward Pellews crew fought for each other as there was a strong Cornish presence and Nelson always had a strong presence of crew from Norfolk so must we include those sort of options also? So incorporate it as a sort of side mission option and not that of a crew requirement option.
  9. This ship can be included in the game as it was essentially a customised frigate however I was under the impression that pirates were not being included as a faction within the game. I suppose it is because I have never been pirate minded that I don't have the same enthusiasm to include the ship as others but mirones is quite right that if the ship is included then it was a frigate and not a galleon.
  10. It's certainly a pretty model. I know that it is just within the timeframe but I would prefer ships a tad more in the middle of that timeline. I agree with mirones in that latter frigates are essentially fourth rates. Having latter frigates or ships for that matter would create some rather severe balancing issues.
  11. French ships were built for speed and manoeuvrability as they were used in more mission based tactics (as shown by many decisions made when engaging the British or moving on to achieve initial objectives as landing troops et cetera) whereas the British ships were built for a slug fest in decisive actions. French ships were definitely built to a better degree although when copper bottoms came in the British ships actually ended up being faster as was shown when Nelson completely overtook the French on their way to Egypt. The ships ended up being very similar as French designs were incorporated into British ones. I look forward to a great diversity with warships within the game.
  12. Friendly fire was a part of this period of time and I don't get upset if someone hits me whilst engaging the enemy. Providing that they're not firing at you intentionally then I think that all is working well. I do like the concept of maturin's 20% of the broadside, rather painful when you are in a lineship
  13. I think that Greatest Admirals is such a hard one to score. Now Horatio Nelson is deemed one of Britain's greatest Admirals and it is a fair comment however the more you read the more you understand how he inherited many of his ideas that created him as a great Admiral in terms of tactics. There are other Admirals whom people overlook however they were the ones who initially tried and tested the tactics that would make Nelson great. Lord Howe for instance at the Glorious First of June had an undermanned fleet and was against a French fleet that had not yet executed their best officers. Lord Hood is credited with instilling the killing instinct and "absolute destruction" mentality of Lord Nelson. Going further back there are other great Admirals such as Sir Edward Hawke who won an incredible battle at Quiberon. George Brydges Rodney, Duncan and Jervis and the list continues. After my ramble I suppose that the point I'm trying to make is that there are a lot of Great Admirals who then deserve credit for their input to create Greatest Admirals.
  14. I am regularly at the Greenwich naval museum so next time I am there I shall ask if they have the plans available for both the original design and the 98 gun refit.
  15. I don't understand how in your terms "it is so damn epic". It was a relatively generic French third rate. The reason the ship made such a name for itself was due to her marksmen not necessarily due to the ship itself. Nevertheless it would be nice to see a French third rate implemented.
  16. Yes please do select HMS Barfleur. Either the initial 90 gun design or her refit of 98 guns. It would be much easier to add her or I shall continue to beg as I have been for the last several months
  17. Keep up the good work with the research. This warship has my complete backing. Admins please back one of the most battle experienced units of her day (plus she's rather attractive on the eyes!)
  18. If we are to disregard timelines then can the Brits have HMS Warrior! (Forgive me for the sarcasm). I don't think that we should implement this behemoth as it is out of the timeframe. Look for ships of the line within the time zone and just because one nation gets a 140 gun ship (Spain) does not mean that all nations should be entitled to one. Every ship had strengths and weaknesses and the Trinidad had far more weaknesses than strengths as can be seen from many reports of her day.
  19. Well it would be a dream of mine to be Lord Hood standing on the quarterdeck of HMS Barfleur (despite him being named Sir Samuel when in command of her). If indeed it is needed to bring her into the game then admin please let me know what would be required.
  20. I have made several posts in regards to this ship. I would love to see it in game and would be willing to spend good money on it in the game if that is one of the options.
  21. Why can't both be done? The French seconds generally consisted of 80 guns. The French I would say have more right to having a first rate in place than a second. There is a plethora of French first rates to choose from however none have been implemented.
  22. HMS Barfleur should definitely be added as a second rate ship of the line. She was arguably the most battle tested warship of the era with regards to the second rate ship of the line. Initially she was a 90 gun warship and then increased to 98 guns. She was designed along the lines of HMS Royal William, also there is a post with blueprints within the shipyard forums.
  23. It works well enough. In a 2v2 last night there was 40 minutes of chain and I believe that only one ship lost their bowsprit. Was tedious but prevented our team from closing distance with them.
  24. You have to be very careful in classification of rates. Remember that each nation had it's own system of rating ships and it shall be interesting to see if that in turn is represented in the game. The most common one that we adhere to today is the Royal Navy rating system however when you look at both the French and Spanish systems and even that of the Dutch system there are multiple classes.
