  1. It's good that people are addressing the politeness issue and calling out those that are not abiding by the conduct required; however I am inclined to agree with Vernon in that it shouldn't be based on one scenario. Now if it has happened more than once then that is fine or should it happen on so grand an occasion as RAMJB has put it both within the fight and in the lobby (in front of a greater audience) than that is most understandably a red flag to be raised. Should the chap be using terminology such as 'gay' with regards to his teams tactics then I would say its childish and tactically ignorant behaviour on that occasion. I believe that if we act in haste then there is the possibility of this thread becoming a breeding ground for "forum qq" which I do hope does not happen. I would state that currently I have had no issue with other testers and that I'm glad that everyone else has come to think that we have a very good community here as technically we are all proponents of making that a good feature of this community.
  2. I am more in favour of the instruments used as opposed to voices. I would love to see your source also on the New Zealand accent being the closest to the British accent of the time as I have the same response as Caldwell to be honest. Also as an Englishman (a rather posh one so that I am told) I would have to state that regional dialects are incredibly different and for Nelson as an example, a Norfolk accent would still today be a Norfolk accent not a Kiwi one
  3. I would love to see that gazette again. I recall your gazette from PotBS and it was a masterpiece. Hopefully you shall grace us with more!
  4. I prefer the boarding system as is. I imagine that the visual effects shall be incorporated in due course. The devs have already requested different marines uniforms et cetera. I personally would be happy with the boarding staying as it is then run the risk of the Potbs avatar boarding which is something that you should completely avoid.
  5. Agreed. You run a terrible risk that with self imagined or prototype warships then you have horrific balancing issues. I personally hope that Naval Action only incorporates historical warships. They do not have to be famous, many of the ships that were not famous still played an important role at some point during their careers. There was an immense amount of variety at this period of time (each nation having their own rating system) and there was a constant evolution of warships through capture et cetera. At the beginning many warships had their guns to close to the waterline which cost all nations a major warship or two. In short there is a huge amount of historical warships in this period that could be incorporated into the game. There is no need for self designed warships or prototypes.
  6. I don't think that it is too long from the last episode to start the series up again. Take the Sharpe series for example. They did a few episodes long after the series; was it "Sharpes Challenge" that was set in India? I cannot quite remember. I would always be in favour on seeing the series make its way back onto the television.
  7. As do I. I can hardly imagine what monstrosities we would see on the ocean should player designed and not historical warships be allowed.
  8. I can't say that I am in favour of locking the line once your range has been found. I think that it would detract from the skill required. It would almost be like auto aiming in World of Tanks. I hope that the developers do not give in to the pleas of aiming being too hard because it would detract from all of the people who are training to become good at it and developing the skill required. I think that akd has put it well that there would have been other factors affecting gunnery that is are not in the game and therefore the current system is a fairly good representation.
  9. Nothing wrong with a sore loser! I mean excuse.
  10. I don't plan on my HMS Guerriere to have rotten masts like the one in actuality so hopefully I can make that a different scenario! You may be outnumbered but who is to speak of the quality of our Captains! Please I pray don't give Britain the Captains that we had in PotBS stationed in Santa Clara and other well known places
  11. Just making another sneaky push for the second rate HMS Barfleur (built on Royal William lines) to be incorporated if some talented shipbuilder cares to do so. Would fill the second rate requirement and I'm sure that I could raid the coffers to lend a hand!
  12. Would appear that the Colonials are making a strong effort. One looks good to meeting them on the Oceans and well we may have another Leopard-Chesapeake affair! The Royal Navy shall take back deserters!
  13. It does seem odd why some people refuse to fight (even unfair odds) in the pvp match-up at the moment. Considering that you lose nothing in the alpha it just makes very little sense to get upset. Wins/losses, it should be more for the experience than the result. Even if you do go against greater odds then you can learn from mistakes and develop into a better player by using different tactics to achieve your eventual goal. Admiral Bing was shot for less so have that in mind and do your utmost, whether it be that you achieve victory or go down with all guns blazing to give the opponent a Pyrrhic Victory.
  14. I suppose that this is twofold. Yes it can be frustrating if somebody disconnects in the battle and you have to sail to their position to finish them off if they do not return. However whenever this has happened to me I have treated it as a training exercise for tacking et cetera as opposed to just sailing dead into the wind like I have seen some people do. Despite testing this game for a few months now I always look at it from a training perspective when things such as this occur. Consider it a ship that has become becalmed and so you must pounce on the opportunity to sink or capture it!
  15. One of the 2v2's I had, I think that I fired my bow chasers twice and brought down two of Chilly's masts lol. Frightfully bad luck on that one.
  16. I recall a player in PotBS refusing to fire on a red devil xebec in his Invincible (obsolete) due to not firing on a smaller ship unless fired upon. The xebec boarded his Invincible and captured it. Made for an interesting read in the nation chat, but I digress. A warning shot would tend to be fired to hove the ship too, if this wasn't answered then a shot into the rigging tended to work. Alas the ethos of back then was entirely different to today and as much as I would love to adhere to it, my example above states why i cannot see it happening. I completely agree that ramming should indeed cause damage to the masts as opposed to just removing the bowsprit/jib-boom as it does at the moment. Also I enjoy the idea of having to use the Survival discipline to cut away the damaged rigging.
  17. It's interesting but if you read about the fight between HMS Guerriere and the USS Constitution then Constitution had an easier fight due to the condition of the Guerriere whose masts were rotted away and she was sailing to have them replaced. Perhaps if the masts were in better condition then the Guerriere would have been able to completely out sail the Constitution (The Challenge, Andrew Lambert). She narrowly evaded HMS Shannon also. Now her escapes were very impressive when on so many occasions she could have become a prize, using her anchor to get upwind and away from British pursuers. However I believe that should she have met the Endymion like her sistership did then she too would have succumbed. Nevertheless they never met and technically she always fought an inferior British warship (and did so with impressive seamanship so as not to take anything away from the ship or crew) so it is hard to comment on what would/could have happened.
  18. Even though losing the entire mast may have not been as common as what it was in the previous builds, losing the tops were a regular occurrence so I should like to see that a tad more. Take the Glorious First of June, out of the British Fleet, Howe sends in a damage report to the Admiralty stating that twenty of his ships had suffered severely in their tops (due to the French practice of firing into the rigging). Also I would rather when repairing the masts that you set up a jury rig as opposed to what we have now but that is just the historical side of me wanting that and I understand that it would be hard to implement. Howe's damage report as well as those of Duncan, St Vincent, Nelson and Collingwood can be found in the book "In the Hour of Victory" by Sam Willis. An interesting read on the different styles of reports of the time. You get to hear of the Officers who they pushed forward, the wounded/fatality lists, damage reports and orders for the fleets.
  19. I bought the series as soon as it was readily available. There was talk at one point of making a film on the Hornblower series but alas I believe it fell through; so one still has to watch the Gregory Peck films! I still find myself switching back and watching the series. The books are great fun and the series is too. Robert Lindsey is great in it, however if you read the book "Commander, The Life and Exploits of Britain's Greatest Frigate Captain" you see that the Hornblower series paints a very different picture of Lord Exmouth (Edward Pellew) than what he was. I would recommend the read to anyone as he was an intriguing figure.
  20. In the heat of battle most orders were given via drum signals on the gundecks as it was too loud for verbal signals. I do think that if you hear the same voice commands it could get a little repetitive. Incorporating drums and expanding on the whistles though would be of interest.
  21. 26 going on 226 so I'm told. Apparently fountain pens and the words that I tend to use are a thing of the past.
  22. Even if a smaller ship didn't do these things then I wouldn't be in favour of allowing him to cause damage for the sake of it. Should you engage them then they shall learn that they need to fire from range (if against a superior foe) otherwise they shall pay the price. Or if they can master the wind and make their way to a raking position. This would then increase their understanding of the game and would help to build the competency of the player base. Alas if you generally give someone an inch then they shall take a mile as was done is RAMJB's case.

    POTBS

Interestingly enough having just gone to look at the game, both the game and the portalus website are down. Perhaps it is time to pull the plug.
  24. There is just simply no need to be rude. Many times people just have to be educated and are not doing things on purpose; for instance I have been hit via friendly fire both with cannonballs passing through ships and when a ship was raking one that I engaged. When I spoke to them they weren't aware of the friendly fire and all was amicable. I have been known to be irascible at times but I must confess there has been no cause for it here.

    POTBS

PotBS was an amazing game back in the day. I remember throwing 12-14 hours away without a second thought. Alas it is just not policed and the developers seem to be attempting to squeeze every penny out of it. If they were as active as the developers here then perhaps they could have turned it around. Too late now though I believe.
