Make Ganking better

Recommended Posts

A quick guide on how to gank in Naval Action:

1.Log in you Alt in a DLC ship and hit the land outside the enemy port. Pretend you are afk sailing.

2. Have another alt group ready hiding.

3. Wait until the bait is taken, report the coordinates and intercept the guy. Or just know where you parked.

4. Abandon ship (free), so the guy gets no kills and Jump him when he is out.

5. Rinse & repeat with other free DLC ships from other group members.

Please suggest your ideas on how this can be fixed))

Invisibility timer, Immune timer, speed boost timer. - all these could help but won't fix the problem completely.

when I tested, I got the kill with 0 reward

A guy in a trader surrendered last night as soon as the battle started.  I boarded, sunk him, and looked in his hold again.  Doubloons, cotton sails and when I exited, reals, XP and more dubs.

Or just get in a hunting group and go where you think the enemy is. Maybe you find one player, maybe you find 10. Thats the way 90% of us "gank." Then the counter-gank: one guy gets sunk, he tell his friend where the battle is and they go there to try to sink the person who sunk their friend. Thats the way 90% of us "counter-gank."

All this extra work and logging in alts to do all this is funny really. I've got a couple alts and I can't be bothered to do anything other than run trade missions with them. I promise we're not really super spies monitoring every port waiting for some poor guy to sail out so we can warp in a fleet of death-ships to sink him. Thats entirely too much work and not worth the effort.

Oh, and a final note: I control what ship I sail in, and whether or not I'm in a group. You control what ship you sail in, and whether or not you're in a group. Very very few players are going to leave you alone because they're not in the right ship to give you a fair fight. There's like 120-400 people online...PvPers are taking whatever targets they can get. Remember that always.

Which is why I find it hilarious when I'm in a Connie, for example, and sink a Mercury or something. The guy goes off in chat "oh it took you in a big ship to sink me bet you feel mighty powerful", etc.  Uhh...no. I was sailing in my ship, I saw a target, I sank the target. Forgive me if I don't run back to port, craft a Mercury or similar, and come back out to give you a "fair" fight. See how silly that is? The Mercury should have been smart and I'd have never had a chance to sink him (by him being in the shallows, for example).

Its an OW game, ganks happen. Learn how to sail your ship, learn what ship to use and when, and you'll die a lot less in ganks.

I know next to nothing about combat, but this seems very applicable to NA.  I've never understood some player's focus on balanced battles.  The game is Open World not an arena combat sim.

Exactly. I love to duel and have 'good' battles where the teams are evenly matched and skill shines through. But save it for the duel room (RIP Duel Room 2016-2018). Or arrange it beforehand.

When I'm patrolling the open world looking for something to sink, I'm not going to limit myself to something around the same size as my ship in some attempt to be magnanimous or chivalrous. If that makes me a "ganker" then so be it. But I maintain that you cannot gank 1v1. Every ship can escape or outfight another (unless you've got a bad build).

I can't count how many times we've tagged an enemy, only for them to ask for a 1v1, or to get salty because i run away once their reinforcements arrive. Its a sandbox game, just because we're in battle doesn't mean one of us is going to sink. If you happen to get caught when sailing alone, its not a gank - you are just unlucky.

It’s a multi-player war game.  Why would anyone possibly expect fair battles?

I would absolutely live to see the percentage of people who constantly bitch on these forums that insist on playing solo.

Because balance is understandably a very good thing while imbalance is pretty universally a negative thing. You tend to have better fights when both sides are challenged, the gank, re-gank and counter gank meta where the battle is decided before it has even started is actually not as fun as you or anyone else paints it. Believe it or not there was actual code for certain ships not to engage each other in age of sail, out of sheer principle, so historically the notions against ganking holds up, more so than could probably be argued for it, unless you're a pirate or something.

Because those are the fun ones.  The hugely unbalanced "battles" are a waste of time.

I disagree completely with your judgement.

My goal is to avoid getting caught.  I use everything I've learned to ensure raiders do not find and engage me.  When I screw up and get tagged it almost always is an hugely unbalanced battle, and I end up sunk or capped.  More often it is over quickly, but regardless I can chose to end it fast at any time.   It's not a waste of time.  The thrashing serves to teach me to be more wary and plan better.

For me the threat of the hugely unbalanced battle creates a tension and the risk on the war server makes for more exciting gameplay.   I enjoy fleeing from and evading the enemy.

If it was a waste of time I'd stop playing.

I jumped into a battle last night (yank in a Herc farming AI) and he called me a (expletive deleted) coward.  You just have to laugh.  Players who do dumb things like fighting AI in heavily hunted waters throwing salt like that.  By definition, a "gank" is a superior force (skill or numbers) attacking an inferior force.  It shouldn't even be discussed in a game like this because THAT IS THE NATURE OF THIS GAME.  It is literally encouraged by the developers.  If you don't want to be hunted down and murdered, do like MacJimm does and figure out how to play smart.  If you are going to flop around in an unescorted trader in an area where the sharks are feeding all day, you deserve to lose your ship.  Tagging AI outside of your capitol is a guarantee that you will lose your ship.

Yeah, we could get into the types of ganks, but it has all been said already.  I've never been a fan of the 20 min timer and the exploits that come out of it, but I continue to use it to my advantage as long as it exists.
