  1. Just finished this recently, it was great. Also would recommend: Osprey's British Napoleonic Ships of the Line (New Vanguard) Illustrated Companion to Nelson's Navy Sea of Words (a necessary companion to O'Brien, but good on its own too) Nelson's Trafalgar: The Battle That Changed the World
  2. Oh, and I'm not sure how to handle ramming damage, since that does happen accidentally more than firing (even if it shouldn't). In that case, it seems like there's already punishment, since damage is done to the rammer, and often results in their sinking anyhow?
  3. Just had a thought while perusing the tribunal, as it seems friendly fire griefing is becoming an issue. If someone does 'x' amount of friendly damage in a match, their flag suddenly becomes a black flag, and they can be sunk by either team. Essentially they become and independent, no longer part of any team. As for what 'x' should be, it ought to depend on the ship's damage capability, so a brig would have a lower threshold than a Victory. That's so if the Vic accidentally does it once, they're not immediately penalized, &c. I'd say x should be whatever the average damage 2-3 broadsides would normally cause. If someone shoots a friendly 3 times, they're doing it on purpose. Sort of like how WoT turns TKers blue, but in this case, the damage to the filthy cur would count. Also their damage earned should drop to 0.
  4. So this would be like the T-34-85M in WoT? I could just earn the same thing with a different name in game, or pay for the US pack and get it? If anything, I could see this as being an "option" for the class of super-frigates, since the stern does look different. It'd just be cosmetic, but you'd get a choice, and then you could name it whatever you'd like (hopefully the devs will have a way to have the name show or something).
  5. Solve that by making it so you can piece together flags with parts in some kind of generator (obviously WAY down on the list). So you can pick from various elements and paste them together. Far harder to make a pony that way.
  6. My guess (and this is entirely that) is that some enterprising Captain moved some cannons to the front or back one day while on a long chase with an enemy, and after the story spread, they started being designed that way on purpose.
  7. FWIW, the Sea Lords have members all over, and we play at various times of the day in our respective zones. I'm sure we're not the only clan to do so (just the only one I can speak for). As an example, I'm on the American East Coast, but I've played more with the members in the UK and Spain lately than I have other Americans.
  8. I agree it'd be a bit of unneeded clutter, especially at this point, but Kerbal Space Program is done in Unity, and it looks pretty detailed to me.
  9. I think the best way to do this would be to go in to a duel room with someone and have them show you the ropes (literally, in some cases). If I'm on, I'd be happy to help. A quick one, though: the only times to NOT use manual sails are: 1. When you need the most efficient forward speed. 2. When you're primary focus is shooting something. In nearly every other situation, manual sails will be the better option. Turning, slowing, tacking, everything.
  10. I really enjoyed fishing in Twilight Princess, too.
  11. Well I'm sure someone did it, but sure we could just do a generic all-black or all-red flag. I don't think there's going to be a way to stop that in the final game. Someone's going to have a Victory and want to be a pirate with it.
  12. While that may be true, British commerce was barely disrupted at all, and the British had the money to spend on their Navy. Even the Continental System, which embargoed good leaving Europe, only reduced British trade by 7% in the first year, and by the following year it increased 27%. Like throwing a deck chair off the Titanic. E: I don't mean to entirely belittle France, they certainly had their small victories during Napoleon, it just didn't amount to much. Prior to the revolution, and I'd imagine after Waterloo, they were a force to be reckoned with, and fortunately this game does include ships from those periods (even if right now all the ships are Napoleonic).
  13. My wife would appreciate a ship with her name on it, I'm sure.
  14. I'm part of a group who could sing/record some if you want, once you get to that point. We know far too many of them.
  15. I'd bet there will be a large American set of players, which means it doesn't matter how strong they were in the actual Age of Sail. There are a lot of us who have expendable income for videogames. Also, a ship can be with any nation, just matters which flag you put on top of it. The Lynx was an American privateer, but was captured by the British. The Surprise was the French Unite, captured, renamed, and copied. That doesn't mean we shouldn't have a good representation from all nations, but I don't think it matters if they're in even numbers or proportioned based on the size of the navies at the time.
  16. "The horrible old Leopard." Actually I guess this isn't that Leopard if she was broken up in 1739.
  17. I don't entirely disagree with you, but the French actually have a few ships here. They're just more famous for having been captured and used by the British. Which is also the case with the other American ship we have.
  18. I tried to vote for ships that would fill the gaps we currently have, but it was hard not to vote for the Bonhomme Richard.
  19. I think it's fine the way it is. There has to be some gaming balance, because we don't have a full crew, and the FOV is not like real life. I'm not going to spot much out of the corner of my eye while staring at a monitor. I think the zoom-out is just the right amount, and I can zoom in if need be. I would say that, hopefully come the live game, the "home" bit goes away as it can be used to pass info to allies when you're already dead. That doesn't matter all that much right now, and it let's us take some awesome screenshots for publicity, but it may be a problem in the live game.
  20. I reenact the American War for Independence. One of the best battles I ever took part in was a street battle, both sides lined up doing parapet firing (basically you march in a column, fire, turn and head to the back, so the rank behind can fire). It had just rained about an hour earlier, but there was not so much as a breeze. The smoke clung to the humidity in the air, and after about 3 or 4 volleys, we literally could see nothing but flashes in the smoke, and the feet of our enemy. I don't know if that's a thing the game could o, given the processor power that'd like require, but it was truly amazing and really gave us a feel for the action in those days.
  21. But WoT also has clan logos, which is more like what will be on banners and flags. Keeping paint color/patterns historical is easy enough, but people are going to want to fly their banner. And like WoT, if it's offensive or breaks some kind of TOS, it can be reported and handled.
  22. Did you play a lot of games in the early 90s? It was pretty common then.
