Getting to a higher rank

Recommended Posts

Hello Naval action forum,

I have tried to search for this topic but I couldn't find any. I have been playing for a few days now, and mostly traded only. I have a about 100k gold now but my rank is way to low to get a better ship.

I actually have no idea how to get a decent amount of experience. When doing those events I get around 60xp, but I need 1000 to get to rank 3. Which seems like a very slow process.

Anyone has some suggestions regarding getting a higher rank? Or are events the only way.

Cheers!

Alright, so combat is the sole means of earning XP then. Good to know thanks!
Any advice on what I should spend my hard earned gold?

Another sidenote, i see that you are part of the Dutch Antilies Squadron, do you guys have a teamspeak server or a website? I'm playing as the dutch as well, so would like to have a chat with you guys!

*edit*
Nevermind found the information about the squadron!

Hire escort from Port window. Start small with hunting same size ships and just sink them. Put as much shots as possible into the target, it will be your xp. Your hired Npcs will help you catch boats. When in Battle open up mini map and give orders to your NPCs. If you play for USA, then sail to Road Rocks, best shallow area to hunt for new players and very close to deep ports.

Pfft. The best way to earn XP is to be part of the SLRN, the greatest navy in the world.  ;)

Just kidding! I personally find that close-quarters carronade combat is truly the best way to earn XP. I got to rank 3 through about 12 engagements in my loyal Yacht hunting AI this way. Missions can be helpful to get XP as well, but you should definitely focus on hunting AI ships. My hunting ground is mainly the northern areas by Jereme and near the southern coast of Hispanola (modern-day cuba) as a Brit- but pre-wipe, I hunted Carapurano and Trinidad during my days stationed at St. George- an extremely profitable AI hunting ground.

Well, i'm quite sure doing missions is faster than OW hunting (having rolled a new character just two weeks ago). After getting carronades i think your best investment with your money is hiring two NPC cutters. Try to do the missions for your rank with them, if you are confident, switch to missions for rank 3. Ideally, in an area that has several island towns open to you and not a lot of mainland to sail around. That way you will earn at least 100 XP a fight, so in one or two days you should reach rank 3 and be able to crew a snow/mercury/navybrig which will make your life a lot easier. Upgrading to an appropriate ship for rank 2, like a privateer, or a pickle is an option, but the effect will be quite moderate.

Alright thanks for all the replies!

progression is not final and will depend on testing - we tried many things (including honor kills) and will continue to experiment a bit

but in general we found that xp is easy once you learn to play. We just need to find the way to make onboarding more comfortable for new players, while still keeping the challenge.

Exp is a biggest turn off for me.

Im struggling to get into this game. Every fight i make 10-30 exp. and need 1000 to lvl. having few h to play every second day.

im now lvl 2 70 exp   need 930 to next lvl.  have a privateer ship.  i have no problem fighting my own class ships, but it takes 30 min to a hour per battle. 10-20 exp reward.   Looking good so fare.

At such rate  i will hit next lvl in spring.

I'd suggest you to mount carronades and catch some brig or snow traders, you need to be as close to them as possible when the attack counter hits 0, work on sails a bit to slow down then blast their hull with mighty carronades, after that some work with grapeshots with boarding and you will get plenty of xp, since sails, hull and crew are calculated for the xp output . Also, as it was said by Nathaniel, try hire two NPC cutters and do missions

I have to say i learned somethings.

Carronets + 2 extra ships in my fleet.   doing missions for 2 days.  Now im master and commander sailing frigate.

Missions Missions Missions.

Snow with carronets + 2 snow in my fleet. one mission = 200 exp + 100 Exp + 8k gold.

No but they help u sin k enemys faster.  and if they kill ship u get assist exp.

Kill exp = 50

Assist exp = 40

solo kill   means 20 exp for damage + 50 exp for kill + 50 exp for mission.

Fleet kill.  10 exp for damage  + 40 for assist   or 50 for kill  depends and 50 for a mission.

Fleeting  increases your time  by a factor of 3 . or so.     early in a missions   mission reward is main income of exp.  the faster u sink them the better.

Later on  when u  get a cerberus  rank   damage will give u more exp, but  then again your fleet snows  wont be able to do more damage as u start fighting bigger ships.
