HMS Shannon overcame an American vessel, I don't see why other British Ships could not!! Arhhhh the classic 'Land of the Free' retort and how we poor conscripted and pressed sailors propped up the Royal Navy!!! I recommend you read this for a comprehensive view of life of the average RN sailor. The press gang is generally regarded as the means by which the British navy solved the problem of recruiting enough seamen in the late eighteenth century. This book, however, based on extensive original research conducted primarily in a large number of ships' muster books, demonstrates that this view is false.
