  1. You are always a resource Mr. Wind. Well done, and thank you.
  2. A stat like manual sails would need to be normalized down to time/minute of battle. Something crazy like that. Then if you've played 2 years, your stats can be compared to that of a 2 week captain... Maybe my denominator is wrong, but the point being is that stats that lend well to "long term playing" might be candidates for normalization. Once we have "the list" we could then critique how a stat can be portrayed meaningfully. Edit: as I reread, it is clear to me that I'm interested in competitive stats. I don't care if they're public, but they are the genre of stat that makes me strive to do better. Just my preference. Leader boards be damned!
  3. I retire the idea. Perhaps I should delete it out...? Playerbase has spoken. Lock topic?
  4. They tracked the win/loss of their captains. I'm sure they tracked #of crewmen killed. # of ships wrecked (needlessly). I'm sure they had records of time blockaded, merchant ships captured. The Navy would track all of this. Service records type stuff... What would you want remembered in your service records if that helps you think on it differently.
  5. Guild: - ports owned w/names & infrastructure upgrades (if any) - total player count, with an "active players past 30 days" sub-metric - alliance history (if such a mechanic will exist) - number of nation/allegiance changes in time period "x" Other? I don't know enough about guild game mechanics to suggest based on upcoming design...
  6. I'm less interested in global leader boards. But as a society leader, of a pvp organization, I might want to know how accurate a shot a potential recruit is. If hit average is 65% in pvp setting, I'd want to know Joe blow has a 35% ratio. There is a risk of the "fu noob" mentality, but this is more about society leaders having a tool to use (if they do choose to use it) to determine if a player meets minimum qualifications for a role. Lol, there, I said it... No throwing stones, stick to admin's request!
  7. With discussion this far, it makes sense to discount the recommendation... Yes, if David beats Goliath one assumes more points to be awarded. If it us a 1v1, then 100% of the recognition goes to the ships for their role. It is more about large scale engagements and target selection *that emulates historical engagement*.
  8. Ok... I've a new job starting, 6 days working, then 6 days off. In my 6 days off, I think I can start learning some of this. Paid application recommendation is 3ds max? I want professional, but intuitive... EDIT: Wow, just checked pricing...I think I'll check out the freeware isle...
  9. We have the Canadians and British to thank for that. Thank you Britain. Thank you Canada *wink*
  10. Good comments all. Put the pitch forks away it was my intent to put forth an idea that promotes historical behaviour in a historically based Age of Sail title. *wink*
  11. Fair comment. Would those be the exceptions, or the general standard of play. Personally, probably the general standard of play However, I'm aware of many players that would enjoy such a mechanic that rewards historical play.
  12. Will all stats be "public"? I would recommend that some of the ones below be tracked and available to Guild leaders, or as a private key (as in eve). Track accuracy of fire, but would request that it is split between PVP and PVE. Track on a guild level... I might like to see members prestige / honor ranking. If there is a commander role, win /loss as commander. A subset of that is average gunweight ratios for battles won and lost (if I lose all of battles at a 1:1 gunweight ratio, I need new strategy). Gunweight ratios for pvp engagements.
  13. Topic: Naval Engagements during the Age of Sail generally abided by a set of "rules" for engaging enemy ships. The primary rule was that line ships only fired at other line ship (unless there was nothing else to shoot at. Assumption as to behavior: it was honorable, and brought little prestige to bowl over a smaller ship in a battle. Concern: with dmg model 4.0 coming, I envision the damage performance gap between large & small ships increasing further (due to crew disparity, multideck disparity, and ability to pentration with heavier ball at angles). Recommendation: with every cannonball tracked on the upcoming 4.0 dmg model, it should be feasible to tell what classes of ships are shooting each other. Create an incentive to shoot at like classed ship. Honor / Reward / Standing (whatever that mechanism will look like) is higher for you if you shoot at any appropriate classed vessel. The relationship of reward to Ships should be proportionate to the ships left in play: since all ships must eventually shot at, the rewards go down as ships are removed. This way, it you remove all the frigates first with your SOL and THEN shoot the opposing SOL, you get less reputation. The same would be true for small ships shooting above their weight class... Less reputation. Conclusion: Incentives to shoot at class appropriate vessels will help simulate historical rules of engagement, discourage the use of obscene firepower against smaller vessels, and promote via game mechanics what an appropriate target is (for both small and large vessels). Food for thought. GRIM
  14. Never could pace myself... [insert witty response in next post!] Volley over to SLVF...
  15. My apologies - in retrospect, that's not the right place in YOUR recruitment thread... I moved it to Auld Alliance, where it "nicely" matches a follow-up....
  16. That typo wasn't intentional! I'll fix tomorrow... "I sure 'are' glad..." "that" slight wasn't intended
  17. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/8f/Let%27sGoCanada.jpg Maybe too close to current day politics! But this is one I could sink my teeth into... Note the flag in the back ground
  18. Are you a reader of the leaves? What omens are these that you portend of the 19th century??? I suppose it is early 1800's...
  19. I am jealous... If only there were more time to learn all of this! Keep up the good work, and feel free to post more advice & tutorials.
  20. France had a little bit of money left over after propping up the American government and winning their war for them. I think there might be a livre or two in the pot for some posters...
  21. Great back story... Got to think of the captain keeping the ship in combat for an hour despite being on fire. Was fatal in the end, but "romantic" (did u really just use that word?) in terms of ship lore.
