  1. I speak English...and I am still struggling! lol. But that is only because they've used the correct language. Simple question though...in the diagrams, is it from the perspective of the white ship or the colored ship?
  2. OK, that's funny. Question is, how will SLVF respond to this!!! (Poster wars of Feb 2015 begin...).
  3. TY for the reference (Noel Sane). I'll be sure to look this fellow up.
  4. Though I've little to report on "massive successes" at sea for France, I can say that it seems to be that the French Army was very impressive. On continental Europe, they seemed a terror, that often required multi nation alliances to stop them. While some may disagree, history would suggest that there was a financial choice that often decided that France can only be great at one or the other... Navy or Army. Army always won out.
  5. In 1672 & 1673, yes... Michiel Adriaanszoon de Ruyter fought on equal terms in several battles with France & England (allies at the time), dispite being badly outnumbered. In the process, he poisoned relations between France / England...as public perception blamed the French navy for failing to share equally in the great battles of the war, Solbay (28 May 1672) and the Texel (11 August 1673). [in the latter battle, sixty Dutch ships of 40 or more guns held their own against eighty-six British and French ships of similar size.] The book goes on a bit more. TL;DR it was not sustainable, and the greatest admiral of that century (de Ruyter) is mortally wounded in battle. That war ends in 1678 with Netherlands / Spain essentially losing (fun to note that England was not in the war by this point, and was actually on the verge of JOINING against France prior to the treaty of Nymwegen (Nijmegen) being signed). So I guess we can conclude that France beat Dutch not my true conclusion... de Ruyter was amazing. Able to win the battles, but not a sustained war against larger fleets.
  6. Whom are you asking this inquiry to? If in relation to my post, certainly not. Britain dominated the seas, by virtue of their massive fleet. In a ship v. ship (1v1) fight between a French captain and a British captain...I would suggest slight edge Britain (based on my limited reading), but nothing that would imply dominating. Both answers to your question, depending if it is in relation to overall fleet versus individual ship. Which is too bad, as I'm going to play french. Now I've got to rewrite history...and my penmanship really sucks! (EDIT: sry, I guess my post was more in relation to the 18th century....I didn't read up on the 17th ...1600s, yes? After a reread, I figured you mean a different time period)
  7. It was headed for the Bermuda Triangle...
  8. Very thought provoking. I certainly learned alot. And was VERY surprised to see that there is a Tribunal in League of League (LoL), and the moderation approach used in Metafilter (I will not name it hear, but allow me to say that the terminology used is the same as Here). Even the 1 change made by LoL, with the default chat...is very reminiscent of PoTBS in those first beautiful years when you could not understand the chat in area from other nations, unless you CHOSE to use a skillpoint to unlock diplomacy. Cross nation flaming was close to non-existent.
  9. They've got stone. My toes are tingling. I'm horrible at Heights. Imagine. No ropes. Harness. Nothing.
  10. I never repair those anymore anyways, not since my first week... Thank you for the answer.
  11. I've been holding off on this topic wanting to be able to contribute to a quality discussion. Really wishing to do some justice to the topic (eg, more than my normal M.O, copy & paste from wiki), I picked up a book: The Age of the Ship of the Line: The British & French Navies, 1650-1815 I am enjoying the book. I have not yet come to the Napoleonic War, as I've just completed the 7 Year War (up to 1762 in the book). Thus far in the book, I will offer up the author's opinion based on the historical facts presented, at a macro "nation v. nation toe-to-toe" level.....No, France did not stand a chance at war with Britain at Sea. This is not to say they did not have victories and that they did not have the potential, it is to say that economics and pure fleet size perhaps play a larger role than that of "pure skill, naval genius, or that of better ships". More to come... So new M.O., I'm not copying out of a wiki....I'm copying from the book: The book covers alot. How the navies were managed. What the political climate was like in each period of time. The intricacies of the leaders. A very common trend was feast or famine for the French navy in terms of funding. Frequently, funding was pulled from the navy, and utilized for the Army. I point this out because that meant they needed to "shelf" ships, and not do the required up keep on old vessels. To give an idea of the size difference between British and French navies at the beginning of the 7 year war (1755-1762)...you will quickly grasp that on a pure numerical basis, France as a stand alone naval power could not match Britain (I am purposely excluding potential allies...and not addressing the quality crew shortage issues as experience at Quiberon Bay): On ships actually in service during the period: So, from a fleet perspective no chance. I love the history. True fact, I love the RN...very rich with tradition. Many great stories. My grandmother was from England. But, I love France in this period of time as well. The underdog one could say. Anways, I'm sure there will be more references at some point, especially after I complete the book! Toodles. GRIM
  12. I have not yet had the op to read, but have downloaded. I have a question, that I am sure you've tested: 2 ships. For sake of discussion, same ship, equal captains, both close to fight (I'll let you decided if in range for double shot). Assumes equal wind. If one captain goes hull, and the other captain goes sail (w/chain), whose reps hold out? Is demast > sink? GRIM
  13. Thank you sir for being a gentleman in acquiescence. Yours truly, Ps - I'm happy to see your work in the admiralty. It is of good quality.
  14. HMS Indefatigable 154 Amsterdam 136 Rattlesnake 125 Christian VII 83 Wasa 62 12:10pm mountain time. Good race. Looks like 2 of the above for certain will be picked, plus 1 or 2 wildcard from the remaining 10.
  15. In reading "the Age of the Ship of the Line: The British & French Navies, 1650-1815", I noticed a passage by author Jonathan R. Dull that references "prames": "... Choiseul now prepared a vast plan for invading Britain. He planned to construct between 225 - 275 shallow draft transport to carry troops, and a dozen shallow draft 22-cannon warships called prames to Escort them..." (in reference to year 1757) I know we have the brig (similar?). Any thoughts? I have a wiki leak is all, curious if others have come data on these? http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pram_%28ship%29
  16. If not mutiny on naval ships, quite possibly desertion. Someone please feel free to correct me as to the time period, but I read: Once a seaman was impressed into the Royal Navy, he was in His Majesty's service until the crew was paid off29, say, at the end of the war. In the army it was a little different. Back then, the law provided that, for a certain time period beyond the enlistment, a man could get himself released. What was necessary was to return the money -- refereed to as the King's shilling -- given to him at the time he signed on, plus an additional sum which was called smart money. Trouble was that these young men rarely had any money. So, it was usual for the young man's family to come up with the necessary funds. The total sum was paid to the enlistment officer who would normally divide it among his recruiting party. (ref., http://www.blupete.com/Hist/NovaScotiaBk2/Part5/Ch07.htm#Impressment) Well, not the source I was looking for, I read another passage elsewhere...but this one is close. Many times impressment was required. Ship to ship, conditions were different, but typically overcrowded and often disease ridden. So once port was made, it was not uncommon to have deserters... An off night. I'll continue to look for the desertion reference
  17. First place I've seen it. Give me another minute... Going to grab another link...
  18. Pennants, as you currently see them in game, will need to be earned (there is a Dev post someplace stating this). Similar idea. I like it.
  19. I will offer, that I would like to be able to fire the pairing of upper and lower decks together (as applicable if equal in number). Player skill still required for manual aim, but why in all honesty would a captain fire one left to right and then go back and do it again? At present, it makes more sense to turn off the lighter gun deck (typically top deck) and go through the heavier gun deck to ensure best bang for buck during a limited rake opportunity...
  20. What of a nomination system. Sure, it can be gamed... But again, we have moderators for that. I post lots... But some respects "less is more".
  21. I thought this one was great too. I have 3 favorites I'd put to poll. But I'd like to hear from admin... I have the impression that the lack of response implies it is over. UNCOFIRMED! But it is my concern.
