Schuetzengel
oh man, did it surrender already? no, but seriously why the white flag, so the 'muricans dont shoot at it?
Hipparchia
Man, this was just the Royal Navy Flag... http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drapeau_de_la_France#.C3.89volution_du_drapeau The white flag as a surrender flag is very recent : The use of the flag to surrender is included in the Hague Conventions of 1899 and 1907. The French flag as you know it (as the national flag), red white blue, and not blue white red, is after the navy flag (this one is 1792, not even at the Revolution, and was actually adopted from the navy flag). Blue and red were also the colours of Paris... MAYBE... maybe, you merge Paris + royalty, and you have our flag. You will be happy to know that the White flag was and is still now a gathering symbol for royalist people : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_flag#Ancien_R.C3.A9gime_in_France The French Navy used a plain white ensign for ships of the line. Smaller ships might have used other standards, such as a fleur-de-lis on white field. Commerce and private ships were authorised to use their own designs to represent France, but were forbidden to fly the white ensign. During the French Revolution, in 1794, the blue, white and red Tricolor was adopted as the official national flag. The white flag quickly became a symbol of French royalists. (It should be noted that the white part of the French Tricolor is itself originally derived from the old Royal flag, the tricolor having been designed when the revolution still aimed at Constitutional Monarchy rather than a Republic; this aspect of the Tricolor was, however, soon forgotten.)[citation needed] During the Bourbon Restoration, the white flag replaced the Tricolor, by then seen as a symbol of regicide. It was finally abandoned in 1830, with the July Revolution, with the definitive use of the blue, white and red flag. In 1873, an attempt to reestablish the monarchy failed when the comte de Chambord refused to accept the Tricolor. He demanded the return of the white flag before he would accept the throne, a condition that proved unacceptable. http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drapeau_du_royaume_de_France#Les_pavillons_de_la_marine_fran.C3.A7aise Si des pavillons d'azur à fleur de lis d'or furent utilisées jusqu'à la fin de l'Ancien Régime5, les vaisseaux français portèrent dès le XVe siècle des étendards rouges à croix blanche35. Surcouf
In fact, it is not the Royal flag in the case of Hermione. On this flag is registered all-ordinators of the frigate. More than 10 000 participants have registered their names on the flag of Hermione. Looking good, you can see gray areas on the flag, they are names.
