  1. I know. My point is, Iam pretty sure bronze shots was not commonly used. (stone was used earlier, but not during the 1700-1800 period)
  2. It is a steam frigate... and also used rifled guns... so way too late for this game.
  3. adding "Christian den syvende"(1767) would be great. A fantastic looking ship, with good sources. If it is too special for a more genetic ship, I do think it would be possible to simply change/limit the decorations to make it more genetic. "Frederik/Friderich den Femte" Just another a more or less random suggestion of a danish 90 gun ship. (with 36pounder in the main battery) As "Mahlitz" pointed out, Lots of other drawings can be found on http://www.orlogsbasen.dk and they exist at the national archives. So it should be possible to get a scan/picture in a proper size.
  4. http://www.navalaction.com/preorder/ Keys are usually sent out each Friday. Atm we are basically just testing the sailing and combat system... but even then this is more stable and more fun than many finished games I bought.
  5. And it is still way more stables and fun than many finished games... :-)
  6. The vid say 100m, but that is not correct. I contacted the musem and ask for a few more details... and it was done at 90m. They first fired off 1kg powder, with no round. Then 1,5kg for the first round, and then used the warload of 3kg for the rest. The round that went high went 2200m The rounds was originals that had been "sandblown" to remove rust - weight 14,9kg
  7. Not sure about the download size, but my game folder is 1½ GB. Just go to a friend or a public wireless or something that have no limit... But also remember that is is a online game, so you need to be online to play.
  8. It is an arrow that show the direction of the wind... just like on a Weather forecast or a windvane... I really don't see the problem... makes perfect sense to me.
  9. Cannons can use balls that fit the bore... since you clean the barrel after each shot. smooth-bore Muskets dont since you don't clean the barrel and when it fouls after a few shots it becomes much harder to load. So you really can't compare accuracy of the two.
  10. Back side of a copy of 50cm thick "ship side" (based on the hull of the danish steam frigate Jylland) It was hit by 3 30pound cast iron roundshots. They where fired at a range of 90m from a 30pound smoothbore gun from the frigate. movie clip about the test... in danish, but you Iam sure you get the point. Got some nice slowmotion clips of the roundballs hitting. http://youtu.be/sXVQAnPjshw
  11. The danish test was done at 90m, so I can't comment on accuracy at longe range, but they did hit the x made by tape... My knowledge is mainly on landbased artillery, but (generalizing a lot) if you look at 12pounders, they had an effective range at 1km and Iam pretty sure they could hit a target the size of a ship with a good hit %. My point is, In my view the problem is not the guns lack of accuracy... but the ship rolling. anyway, back to debating ranging shots.
  12. Last spring an original 30pound smooth bore from the danish frigate "Jylland" was tested... first short went high and an artillery radar followed the ball until it hit the ground some 2200m away. (we are talking a gun used in 1864, but still a smoothbore firing original solid roundshots of cast iron)
  13. http://milhist.dk/vabnet/major-danish-warships-built-holmen-shipyard-1692-1744/ A interesting article about "holmen" and the danish warships build there... worth a read. It include of list of ships and information about surviving models and plans.
  14. Iam not saying you are wrong, but can you actually back that statement up with sources? I actually think the other factors you mention is the real problem. Anyway, I do think more spread would be a good idea. Also makes it less frustrating when you aimed just a bit too low and all your rounds hit just short of the target... since some will go long and hit then.
  15. my point is. roundshot was usually made of iron?? Or are you talking bronze cannons?
  16. How about the factor of how clean the ship is? the Royal Sovereign was faster than the other british SOLs at Trafalgar.
  17. I agree that it would be best if the player have the decision... but if the damage you can take is the same, then nothing is really changed for the player who "loose". he is out of the battle. For the winner, he now have to decide if he want to slow down and use tim and crew on putting a prizecrew aboard or nif he is too bussy with the battle.
  18. Well, Iam sure we can debate the different details... But the core point is that ships was not that often sunk by gunfire alone during a battle... unless it cough fire and blew up. They where usually lost later to storms... On simple temporary solution could be: When a ship take 100% flooding the ship don't sink but strikes the colors. All the remaining crew is placed on "survival" and try to keep the ship from sinking. (if you didn't have the crew on survival they might be able to save the ship) If the flood gets to 110% it sinks. (or some other fitting number) The crew repair and pump to the extent that they can keep the ship from sinking. This would not change the game for us since ships can take the same damage.. But we would actually get ships that strikes the colors... (if the crew was not on "Survival" and in this setup all the crew should do would be repair/pump... normally when you are on survival some still man the sails and guns... ) In the long run some more detailed system with moral could be made.. or what ever plan their is for allowing surrender... and making it a good idea to do. Adding the option to board a surrendered ship (from some distance) and put a prize crew on it to help could be added later. (I expect more crew help in the repair/pump rate?)
  19. Wont work since there is no way of stopping players from communication with TS, skype or something else.
  20. I think it would add to the immersion... But you would need the voices to be in the correct languages... so if you sail a Spanish ship, it should be the correct spanish terms...

    POTBS

I have written a number of critical comment on the page... and they all gotten approved... So at least some criticism is accepted. But otherwise I do agree that it a strange decision not to get a forum. (hell, just make a new phpbb forum.. it can be done in a few minutes)
  22. Are you sure it have not been removed again? Some days ago I needed up in a battle with 3 small ships(inc me) against a Constitution. So we agreed to test a few things. We easily got him to about 42% Sails. and then we could not do any more. Firing low, high, from the side or front... it had no effect.
  23. WWII warships < Sailing warships. Anyway, It will be different games and two different economic models.
