  1. Azzak, some errors in your post.1. The Spanish had the resources readily at hand in the New World to float new warships. Our very own Santisima Trinidad was launched in Havana, Cuba, and she wasn't the first or last great ship to be floated in those waters. 2. Small nations could afford ships of the line. There have been plenty of plans submitted by members here from such seagoing nations as Venice, Portugal, and even the Knights of Malta (previously known as the Knights Hospitaller, heck they weren't even a nation and they had their own Navy including ships of the line!). 3. Logistics and money. Hrm, I can think of any number of ports in this game that are based off of historically rich and well supplied ports from history that were capable of feeding and paying for the crews of ships that paid visit to their harbours. The difference is it was easier to do for organized nations than it was for a motley crew of rabble rousers. The ONLY exception, that I'm aware, to this is Jean Laffite, and even then, his crews did not use large craft. TLDR: do some research next time, it helps immensely. ????
  2. Freedom comes with a price, always does. Pirates were free to do as they wished, but as hunted men, they carried a price on their heads. I don't know of a single game, movie, story, etc where pirates were able to build massive ships and crew them as effectively as organized nations do. As far as I am aware, every large ship that has been featured in a pirate plot has been commandeered by a disgruntled navy officer or captured by a pirate or smuggler. Construction of such large ships also requires manpower and time that no band of "free men" unbound and unrestrained by law have ever single-mindedly accomplished. Or have y'all forgotten how quickly such men grow bored of an enterprise that fails to reap quick reward? It's no different than the casual gamers seeking a finished product, then throwing a fit when they're told to be patient longer than they want to be. So why, why indeed, should this game be any different?
  3. Assuming the two frigates are selected, I hope the devs select either one of the two fourth rated vessels or the Christian VII. Another second rate would be beneficial, but so would a fourth rate for players looking to move up from frigates. Secretly disappointed not to see the Principe Real in the vote, but maybe in due time!
  4. They're lucky they get such toys. There are plenty here that remember how it was on PotBS. The only ship larger than a frigate that could be legitimately crafted was the Poseidon. The Hyperion and the Wenden refit (can't be bothered to remember the name, I preferred frigates) were the only ships of the line that pirates could access without capturing them first. That is, until Portalus started doing their premium slide to oblivion and added a 2nd rate refit. If the combat mechanic for pirate vs pirate gets smoothed out, and access to ships of the line gets drastically limited, the outcry will be great, but I have a feeling that instead of quitting, you'll see a majority of those players fleshing out other nations, or bloating already fattened nations like GB, or USA, and the only players remaining pirate being the hardcore minority.
  5. To take a page out of PotBS: the Leviathan had the most cargo space, but she was an absolute tub to sail. The Couronne was able to carry a sizeable cargo, was a tub, but defended herself well with a formidable armament. The Khan had a medium cargo load, but doubled as a pvp ship. Lastly, sacrificing cargo space for speed, and the merchant vessel of choice for a few societies, the San Mateo Trader. et cetera et cetera (there were a few others I left out). Basically what I'm getting at is there will be a shortcoming for the Farquharson should it ever be implemented. As ragnar said, all it will take is a more maneuverable vessel on her six, and you might as well strike your colors. Or you could do merchant convoys if you're in a guild. Nothing like an escort to deter an opportunity seeking sea devil.
  6. Found plans for the Revenge as well as a multitude of other 74's. British 74's
  7. Was looking for a specific ship and came across some rather nice paintings of ships by an artist named Geoff Hunt: Website link At least I know what artist to turn to if I want a nautical themed room.
  8. I agree that they should have been put into the game differently, however, my guess is that that was impossible with the resources they had available at the time, if that was what was intended. Not being an admin or a dev, we can only guess as to their true intentions. If they DO intend to change the way pirates are to play this game, either it needs to be one big patch with minor tweaks along the way to stabilize the playstyle, or successive small patches. I will go so far as to say that if the devs do remove the crafting of anything larger than a fourth rate for the Pirate faction, then I will willingly haul down the Stars and Stripes and raise the Jolly Roger. Until then, playing as a pirate is something of a joke at the moment.
  9. A more detailed plan can be found here: http://www.1800techgallery.com/gallery/naval/shipbuilding-1805-2.html Will try to find some accurate depictions of her when I can.
  10. I guess the Niagara and the Essex aren't American are they?As far as everyone getting together to suppress piracy, you must not have played PotBS. Didn't work there either.
  11. Still makes him a pirate, no matter how you paint it. Have to look at both sides of the argument and decide for yourself. I'm a fan of his, but I still reckon he was a pirate.
  12. He was a buccaneer, which was technically a pirate. Sir Francis Drake was a pirate as well, technically speaking. Just because they were English didn't mean that they couldn't be pirates.
  13. As long as pirates have the same abilities as other nations, it will be impossible for them to be overcome, especially when it comes to obtaining ports. Take away their ability to own a port (other than the ones they claim naturally), and you make it much harder for them to defend their own when dedicated nations come to claim theirs.
  14. Good to see SnD back in the game. Never was a dull moment with y'all around back in the day. Still remember those 50 or so Brits congregated around one of the ports on the Spanish Main (Back in '13 think it was?), then a six group of SnD comes sailing in and we all scattered or ported up. Shameful it was, but one had to admire an enemy whose reputation could instill such fear.
  15. I'm going to explain my vote concerning crafting and hope that the players understand why I voted the way I did. I said no to everything except fourth and fifth rates. I'm a former PotBS player and I spent a year or more playing as a Pirate on the Antigua server. Most heavy rated ships helmed by Pirate players in that game ended up being in the carebear fleets, continually grinding cash and xp, or forming a six man backbone in port battles. On rare occasion, you'd see a captured third rate (Cannonball Apollo anyone?), or the refitted fourth rate Hyperion being used for pvp, but they rarely made a major impact in either of these roles. That being covered, the mainstay of Pirate ships were fifth rated vessels or smaller. Pirate players loved their refits and captured refits more than any other nation I believe. Red Devil xebecs, Cursed Blade, Bloody Dagger, and privateer Vengeance frigates, the super frigate Hercules variants, and even the privateer refitted Indiamen. I'm personally against the Pirate faction being able to craft anything above a 5th rate, but I can accede to the notion of them being able to craft 4th rates as a compromise. Anything larger, however, should be restricted to capture and refitting for personal use. In response to Zermonth's outraged response, the devs made it clear when they set out to create this game that being a Pirate meant you were part of a faction, NOT a nation. Meaning you don't get the same benefits as a nation would, which I would venture to assume covered the RvR and crafting aspect. Being a pirate meant you were outlaws, vagabonds, scoundrels and all the dregs of society. Pirates are not meant to be united under one banner, hence being able to attack and sink one another at will. Being a pirate here is meant to be the equivalent of "hardcore mode", and there are a few players who have accepted and embraced that mentality, and their names can be readily recognized by the pre-release tester community. God forbid we have a horde of "Jack Sparrow" wannabes running around in large rates attacking AI fleets instead of using them to incite fear across the Caribbean.
  16. Was hoping to see some better plans posted. I already had a copy of her plans up, but the book binding created issues with the scan. Thanks!
  17. She would be a nice second rate complement to the Pavel. The only reason I see for making her a second rate being we have 3 1st rate ships already (2 ingame and 1 in development), and only 1 second rate. 86 or 90 guns sounds sweet to me.
  18. I know what she is, historically, but you have to keep in mind where the devs will place her in the game with her current gun layout. 64 guns in the current game meta is a 4th rate, not a 3rd rate. If she was introduced into the game as a 64 gun 3rd rate, she'd be at a severe disadvantage against the Bellona. She's closer to the Ingermanland if anything. And Sella, I know all too well where you're coming from, and I'm not trying to put you down at all, keep trying man.
  19. Probably, though I would guess the numbers would be significantly lower unless there was a serious bug or radical pvp mechanic change that would see a shift in numbers to that server.
