  1. The Auckland race is starting in a few minutes. Live on YouTube.
  2. Amp signed the Code of Conduct with his fingers crossed behind his back...
  3. (The sail plan is indeed the type called "brigantine" in common multilingual terminology of this era.) What makes it especially piratical?
  4. I tried to use the profanity generator. It told me I was a "humorless clay-brained canker-blossom". (LOL, "humorless" really should be added to the first column, though it didn't have our current meaning in the early 1800's)
  5. Sin Khan, Your premise seems to be that community self-policing is better than a police authority. I agree with that. Take it a step further, that individual self-policing would be better still. Given that none of these are done perfectly, none of these will be sufficient by itself. A community needs an appropriate mix of all three. To that end, some suggestions: 1. Comment on what you think would work well (for example, this thread) For example, an useful discussion might be "what makes a poorly-implemented vote-to-kick option a bigger problem than it is a solution?" 2. Participate in the individual code-of-conduct yourself (since you're not part of the problem) Yours respectfully, etc.
  6. I think the key you want is ` or ~ (to the left of the numeral 1 above Q).
  7. FYI, their quarterly newsletter about books and maritime art is out: http://www.mcbooks.com/newsletter.php
  8. Careful what you wish for... The same recordings playing over and over with the same intonation might actually limit immersion... dare I say "arcadey"? The Prater warning you suggest is necessary, though, if anyone's going to have a fighting chance ;-)
  9. I'm still a very bad gunner in this game. Practicing as much as I can. But, like any bad golfer or bad tennis player, I place some of the blame on the equipment. ;-) So, I got a Kensington Expert "Mouse" as an interim step to pedal rudder control, etc. Primarily for the big buttons and the scroll ring. (In my armchair set up a traditional mouse isn't ideal.) Here's how I have it mapped right now:
  10. Could there be a pennent to fly on our ships, I wonder? Or is that just asking for trouble?
  11. I think there are a few commonly-held ideas that lead to that curious attitude. I think they're fallacies: 1. That if you can't prevent very close to 100% of the cases, there's no point in attempting any solution 2. That offensive language is equivalent to "adult" or "mature" language 3. That the free speech principle always shifts responsibility from the speaker to the hearer I am happy to participate in a group that feels there "is something you can do about it".
  12. Fair enough. I was thinking about large fleet engagements where both roles are busy ones.
  13. Seems to me it would be great fun to team up with another player on the same ship for a fleet engagement. One player in charge of position, tactics witin the fleet, the other in charge of gun loading, aiming, firing. Communication would be essential, just like in the actual engagements. I'm not envisioning a complicated mechanism, just a division of the current steering and gunnery modes/views across two players. I have to imagine this came up before (2013?) but didn't find a matching thread. Thank you.
  14. See this for some ideas: http://forum.game-labs.net/index.php?/topic/3865-substantive-advice-in-a-wired-article-for-avoiding-a-toxic-community/?fromsearch=1
  15. I'm sure you'll get good suggestions from people here. Since you mention administration, this may be of interest as it includes some of the French planning and communications: http://books.google.com/books/about/Most_Secret_and_Confidential.html?id=q5LfAAAAMAAJ Probably not a perfect source for what you want, but one that came to mind.
  16. True. (Sorry about the sticker shock; wasn't nice. I added a warning later) On plus side, no one will complain if people put whatever damn name they want on the model's stern and if they use whatever damn paint color they want, and can even put a damn fancy-pants pirate on board with a huge rear spoiler and double exhausts to soup 'er up like real pirates did in real life. Well, on second thought, it would be a double-damn shame messing up an irreplaceable work of research and craftsmanship. Never mind.
  17. Don't know if these guys are still active, but I hope so: The North Texas Battle Group builds, sails, and fights 1/144-scale radio-controlled WWII-era model warships in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. CO2-powered cannon are used to fire ball bearings into balsa-wood hulls. Ships are damaged - even sunk! Then they are recovered, patched, and sent back into battle! https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=north+texas+battle+group https://ntxbg.org/tikiwiki/tiki-index.php
  18. http://www.houstonmaritimemuseum.org/ship-models/ They update the list periodically. (Disclaimer: These are museum pieces, so don't be shocked at the $$$$ prices after the jump)
  19. And, add in a handful of patterns for combining the allowed words and the set of possibilities gets larger exponentially.
  20. Although this thread is from before my time, the more I think about this idea the more I like it.
  21. This is a serious topic, so I won't mention my ideal squadron (Vincible, Defatigable, Trepid, and Surprised)
  22. This would be helpful for practice, and testing custom controls, without risk to other player's enjoyment or to one's own reputation.
