  1. Change "contraband goods found on board" to "known smuggler"...
  2. The bailiff found me at the bottom of a tavern, and he recalled me to my duty. (I had to pay him, the rogue.) He released the bond he had placed on the map, and I trust all is well-appointed for your navigation again, gentlemen. Though sadly out of date, I am shamed to say.
  3. For the rudder return to center from either side, try the key sequence "adad", and the phrase "amidships".
  4. When I put the telescope to my eye, I think i'd be better able to point in the right direction. Maybe the glass could auto-point to a target nearest the current view angle?
  5. Jerome, we'd welcome suggestions for the tdamap.com map. It's being updated to handle port captures and other new features.
  6. That's pretty impressive! It takes a lot to finish that well.
  7. If I were doing this, I'd mentally divide my position # by 1000, just to alter the feel. I'd consider 4th (4,000th something) a great result! And 2nd (2,000 something) to be outstanding!
  8. Yes, I hope to get that done this coming holiday week.
  9. http://www.kontiki2.com/ "Kon-Tiki2 is sailing two balsa rafts from South America to Easter Island. Roundtrip. Documenting climate change, marine life, plastics, pollution, guara board navigation, and human reactions to Pacific sunsets"
  10. 90* off the wind with a spinnaker can't be right... for the race I participated in, theY published the polars for each type of sail you could buy. Maybe this game has those?
  11. Hey, that's great! Thanks for the detailed update! Seems like you are enjoying it - I did a similar one for the VOR some years ago. It took some diligence because they didn't have scheduled course changes back then. (apologies for the late notice of the start :-) Here's to your continued progress up the rankings!
  12. http://www.virtualregatta.com/en/index_jvabre2015.php Let us know how you do!
  13. No voices, please. Repetitious and therefore annoying. Sound signals are better when done with restraint, like the ones in the game now.
  14. Is the user name what is used to log in to the forum? If so, I suspect it won't allow spaces and punctuation, so using display names might not work so well...?
  15. This is a significant insight. I think it's another reason to leave realistic winds out, and find a compromise with a simple model that feels less mechanical.
  16. Absolutely true. We have to have a wind model. The one we have right now is too simple. I've been pondering proposing a better one since I got into OW, but i dont have a refined idea yet. The question about having regional or local winds is the big one for devs to consider. For wind to be a strategy factor, we could argue for local winds and prevailibg winds both as a necessity. If wind is just to be a part if the scenery, then a simple model with a little more variety is enough.
  17. I think it depends on whether the open world will be part of the strategic game, or if it will just be a way to travel between battles and go shoppng. If strategic, then prevailing winds, port depth and locations will play an important role in influencing trade routes, risk for traders etc, strategic value of defending areas, etc. If open world is just a way to get from place to place, then wind will be an annoyance with no real purpose and only adds a little bit of realism.
  18. As I write this, there's a perfect illustration of how the wind is concetrated around the islands we're so familar with in the game: http://earth.nullschool.net/#current/wind/surface/level/orthographic=-70.84,17.86,2274 Here's a static view:

  20. In my opinion, there are better solutions than having GL/NA developers spend time on map tools. I agree with and acknowledge Destraex' point about keeping the tools to a minimum. The net is full of drawing and annotation tools, most of them free. The current in-game map, Siegfried's map, and Prater's tdamap.com map are all accurate for navigation over long distances. Take a screen shot, drop it into your drawing tool of choice (even PowerPoint) and notate away. Simple lines at fixed angles will give you the bearings you need. Text boxes and shapes for your notes. IMO, there is no need to spend game dev time on map tools and note-taking when an overwhelming number of general-purpose tools exist to suit anyone's preferences, budget, complexity, style, etc. etc, with far more variety and features than an in-game tool would ever afford. (I have the same opinion on requests for mini-games and furnished models of the captain's cabin. Go to chess.com while on passage, or take a video tour of the real Victory. Let our cherished game developers concentrate on features we can only get from them.)
  21. We finished updating the TDAmap.com ports yesterday. The list is completely accurate again.
  22. Yeah, I'd like to be able to down-vote posts whose subject lines don't indicate the subject of the post.
  23. It's one factor that would make the ow more strategic and tactical and less like going shopping. I would like to see bad weather as an accelerator of gradual wear and tear. I think some map areas could be known for bad weather, affecting the flow of commerce and ones ability to hold the area for long periods of time.
