  1. I agree. They should strike colours, burn or be damaged too badly to fight or be abandoned. Last resort if to have them explode like le orient at the battle of the nile.
  2. perhaps we need blockades in game. That is a natural counter to these frigates. Would force it to take something its own size on.
  3. Privateer I also thought that life aboard a ship was no picnic especially when you consider some ships were at sea for 9yrs !!! But then I started thinking of the alternatives. Some were worse. Some were better. But most were worse lol. Add to that the fact that almost nobody got to see the world back then.
  4. I just wish they would make more hornblower and jack aubrey movies. I like adventure and pirates but like maturin said. usually there is no real story. Just a lot of drama that goes back and forth for 300 episodes and follows a standard script.. My problem with that is that its sail themed but could really be set in the future or the past or anywhere. What I mean to say is they don't give a rats about the setting, that is just back drop for the human drama. Thus you don't learn or enjoy much from the period. Action is minimal also. Much like that TV series LOST. As for the sex on TV. I am no prude. But I do hate it when modern film needs to have something for everyone instead of being allowed to concentrate on the story or subject matter. It cheapens and wastes time. I don't want to see people take dumps either. I know they did it and may be interested in seeing how in a 2 minute scene but thats it. Now sex is taking up almost 50% of programs like game of thrones. Problem is the masses lap it up. It's an excuse not to get in trouble watching pron. No matter how far from the subject matter these days, there is always a standard script for: love, sex, tokenism to appeal to everybody where ever possible. I don't mind if it is realistic, I do mind if it adds nothing to the story but to wet some nerds appetite in his boredom. As they say sex sells. It just means that there have been no quality movies that are ABOUT something and focus on it for some time. I think Master & Commander came close but that was not popular at the box office. The other disappointing thing is that this kind of hollywood mentality is starting to show up in games. But for now thankfully most games are exactly about what they set out to do. You don't have world of tanks or ARMA3 for instance stopping for a sex scene.
  5. I love war of the roses and have been there since alpha all the way to lvl60. I almost always play with a visor down because I hate the third person feeling. They screwed up with vikings unfortunately but there is still hope for a roses expansion. I also like: Total War series - but wish it was less main stream these days. I don't get the same vibe from it I got from the earlier series. Combat Mission by Battlefront\company of heroes Mechwarrior online Wargame Red Dragon il2 Cliffs of dover\il2 battle of stalingrad\rise of flight Star Citizen - well I hope I will like it. Still a good year away really Homeworld\sins of a solar empire P.S. Mount and Blade Napoleon is good. But despite owning all of the others I just don't like them.
  6. I think perhaps that these ships are engaging at dangerous ranges to begin with. I should also mention that Ancient galleys used to have to be specially re-enforced at the bow to withstand ramming and not fall apart themselves. They were of much lighter construction however. But it does illustrate that ramming cannot be expected to work well on ships of equal weight not designed for it. Both would suffer equally. We must not assume that the bow of an age of sail ship was any tougher than the rest of the ship ???
  7. Apparently similar French heavy frigates were considered failures but were not. It was due to lack of french crew - i.e. french gunners were being used ashore in the army and the french fleet was short of quality men. The British captured many of them easily with smaller frigates and drew the conclusion that they did not want to spend extra crew that it took to man super heavy frigates when smaller frigates were handier and more effective. Never the less they still fielded these ships. However they were primarily 24pdr and not the 32pdr arrangements that the americans later had on the constitution and her sisters. The constitution class were similar to the german ww2 pocket battleships and seem to have met the same fate for the most part. Doing well but eventually being overwhelmed ???
  8. are all of the ones mentioned in the time period for this game?
  9. How about this one. This was probably a purpose built 44 gun frigate. However. The real question is with regard to pounds in the broadside and sailing speed and ability http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Virginie_(1796) The Consititution had: Armament: 30 × 24-pounder (11 kg) long gun 20 × 32-pounder (15 kg)carronade 2 × 24-pounder (11 kg) bow chasers[2]
  10. The Indefatigable from hornblower seems like she should come close to the constitution? Question is could she sail as well? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Razee Three 64-gun ships were cut down (razeed) in 1794 into 44-gun frigates. The most successful was HMS Indefatigable which was commanded by Sir Edward Pellew. HMS Magnanime of 1780 HMS Anson of 1781 HMS Indefatigable of 1784
  11. Razee's would be too slow to catch her though right? Were there british super heavy frigates built within the time frame though? Not really talking about squadrons taking the constitution on as in this game navies will be much more even in terms of player numbers where as in the time period the americans could not possibly dream of coming close to the number and power of the british fleets at home in europe.
  12. I know that just about any ship of the line. A 74 for example would beat the constitution. But theoretically the consitution was built to run from those ships. It was never meant to fight a real battle. So with this in mind and considering how heavy it's pound for pound 44 gun shot is for a frigate. Did the British or any other nation have anything comparable in the period? I know the British captured a 40 gun french frigate that may have come close. But could it have outrun her? Basically I am wondering if everybody will be running constitution class ships in the open game. Two of these ships could be unbeatable by anything but a three decker.
  13. I would love all this realism in game. I do not want to play dodgem cars on water. Nor do I want to have nothing to do like in WOT where it was just a main gun and a turret twist. yawn.
  14. By crossing the T, I just mean that one can use the rudder to better effect to get into position if one does not have to do hand brakeys effectively on every turn. Also I was just thinking that a shallower turns should allow you to not only keep. Speed up but keep the wind at your back for longer periods.
  15. This will add a new dimension to where the T crosses.
  16. full rudder should also be having a braking effect on ships that you do not always want. Light rudder retains speed. Light rudder is usually a consyand requirement to offseeet lee in order to travel in a straight line. light rudder allows a course to be set that lines of ships can follow or deescribes a turn that crosses the enemy T. Right now we are all doing 90 degree angles.
  17. I have never understood people idolising the lone wolves, pirates, privateers and mercenaries. But yes they existed and should be in game. I however do not really want a game that focusses on that as a primary element. I would rather this game focussed on the major powers and their rather major fleet POWER however.
  18. Was thinking of getting a 74 ship of the line nelson era model kit to build. I have no idea what to get but want something that is realistic and looks wooden rather than plastic. Any suggestions for brand or even specific kit?
  19. Australia. It may be that i have as routing issue to work out both at work and at home. It is only very occasionaaally it happens. I will troubleshoot it properly next time.
  20. Not sure why. It just cannot find the page sometimes. Like it has DNS issues. I must remember to get the error next time.
  21. It reminds me of the argument people always have for ww2 games about letting the germans have the Z class aircraft carriers they were building but never completed or converted instead. If you want to replay history then yeah what if is plausible but opens the flood gates for many other things. It also changes the entire flavour and strategy of the nations in question and gives people the wrong impression of history. I simply think it would be wrong to be facing an American fleet consisting entirely of ships of the line in this period. But that is what would happen should it be allowed.
  22. On the flip side I hope there is time compression like in silent hunter otherwise I would have to give up my day job just to play.
  23. What was the strength of the American Navy in this period up to 1815? Personally not really a fan of bringing back things that were simply not part of the navies of the day for whatever reason. The Americans did not think it important to complete them. I assume the Americans used frigates because of tactics and possibly not wanting to draw an entire british line fleet over for a conventional fleet battle??? 20 or so ships of the line plus on one side.
