  1. This what you describe is just one form of piracy. The legalized one in the service of a nation, with a "letter of marque". Basically that is the privateer career. He gets his booty or a large share as long as he is attacking only the nations his king wants to see attacked. Piracy employed by his nation. The moment he strikes someone else, the privateer status is lost and he is an ordinary pirate again, who knows no allegiance to any side (or just temporary for some 'deal'). The moment when we don't speak about privateers but full pirates, the nationality or origin does not play any role. On the contrary: as a criminal awaiting death sentence once caught his way back to his country is impossible without granted pardon, he has to seek a fortune with another nation where nobody will know him (so he hopes).
  2. Independence... being the only ones capable of founding secret hideouts on the map... having no diplomatic ties to observe as we nationals have to... hit-and-run fun and seeking wealth and fortune... All this will make people flock to a Pirate clan, it will be a totally different play style. And I think this is more than sufficient in benefits as to accept the restrictions on crew / ship size.
  3. That fits into the clan structure picture, doesn't it? Those loose groups never had a full size battle ship fleet, crew came and went with their plans and success, low grade of organization, people deciding to become Pirates have to face legal problems outside of these groups and thus have to think twice before joining Pirates -- all that must be the major difference to a real nation.
  4. Delete pirate 'nation' altogether, as there never was one. Pirates are individuals fighting for profit and maybe grouping with others, that makes a clan. So Pirates can offer what some have been demanding for all nations in this forum: a clan based conflict and not RvR. All 'other' nations of course stay nations. And seeing Pirates move around in fleets the size of a national navy is just ridiculous. Impede them in crew command, so they can barely use a 4th rate. Other mechanics, like the proposed dens and secret hideouts, are given to them as unique feature in compensation of the lost status and battle ships of a real nation. I think that will bring them even more players...
  5. No. They won't sit on a First Rate. Only experienced players do. New and poor players cannot afford the ship anyway, with or without maintenance - if they weren't already impeded by not commanding enough crew.
  6. Idea implies the upgrade is being damaged for causing extra repair costs? Or is it a general cost increase no matter if modules are damaged?
  7. May I remind of my thread here, it is basically the same suggestion:
  8. What about medals? Arggh, that brings me to another suggestion topic, but I have already the impression I get on your nerves with each day another pee in the pond. :) Yeah medals... imagine every player would have a medal box which every other player (including enemy) could have a look at. Medals for won PB battles, won screen battles, unselfish sacrifice against all odds in epic defeats... medals for having reached a x score of sunk enemies on one day... etc... the list of memorable honors is long... Perhaps then Palatinose would act more like a civilized being in game, when he gets his ego boost already served by a full medal box. Honorary swords. Honorary titles.
  9. A share of victory marks for the members of screening battle groups would be fine. Now it feels like second class, volunteering for screen. If the rewards were higher, more would volunteer for that task and get more recognition, maybe still not on the same level as PB group, but closer.
  10. Sounds rational. If only I were slower than him, which wasn't the case. Was a rather painfully slow decrease in distance, so I figure I must have been like a few 0,0x knots faster than him, but still steadily approaching.
  11. Unfortunately not. But I can exclude an evening, fog or stormy weather as reasons to cut down on view. It was plain day and I was in the faster ship approaching him, so an increase of distance could also not have been the reason of him disappearing. I was at his 6 o'clock position, right behind.
  12. I swear in the two cases I mentioned and observed the fleeing ship had no two minutes time, in the first one I even did not see his sails down when he vanished in front of me. Perhaps there is a workaround or what?
  13. I have seen a couple of times people using the log off when being chased or searched as an easy get away: they vanish from open seas and can log in anytime later for continuing. I regard that as an exploit of a game mechanic which should be made impossible to some extent, or be punished. You can get disconnected because of a terrible lag or when your internet connection fails, or a computer related problem (lately I sometimes get a frozen picture when in OW and only restart helps), so the game needs to be able to differ between technical issue and player decision to exploit the exit possibility when things are getting hairy for him. Make it so that logging off is impossible (without sanctions) as long as an enemy ship is in visual distance (both see each other) or in a radius of 10k to enemy player positions on the map. Logging off in ports would not be touched by this. Without implying a technical prevention there is still the possibility to sanction a logg off which is done as exploit and matter of escape. Like a fee payable in PvP marks and, if these are not existing, Combat Marks from account of the exploiter. When someone is not willing to fight and wants to stop being chased, he may still simply surrender to interceptors and the battle is not necessary. His ships is confiscated by the chasing party. Pro: No more exploit of logging off, targets remain legitimate targets, actions have more consistent consequences without the backdoor of vanishing from the map when it is convenient. There is no more magic reappearance later when the search has ended and the raider can just continue from where he left. Con: Difficulty (?) for the program to decide when the log off was due to technical problem and stays unsanctioned, or was done voluntarily, as an exploit.
  14. We want the better ones to like this game and stay, don't we? Assholes nobody will miss when gone. You keep the better ones by providing justice in game and giving them a trusted home in a clan, not a nest of vipers. Not providing the ground for amok-running psychos who push new players instantly away.
  15. You seem to have little or no confidence in the human being. Again: This my proposal has no inclination to become a tool of tyranny, as it sees a council of experienced players and trusted nationals presiding over the court. You think they would like to risk their reputation and start sending innocents to the Pirates because they don't like them? Don't you meet any gentlemen in game? In effect, your defaitism in law enforcement issues results in indirect encouragement of unfair player behavior and just lets assholes be assholes. And produces more of them, because "Aye, why the hell not, Vazco will close his eyes and we cannot be made responsible for treason ever! Let's do some more just to prove we are untouchable and invincible!"
  16. I was not talking about mere "accusations" but fair trials with a court of judges who also interrogate the accused. And in case of "abuse" the individual could still open a case here in forum tribunal. Complete incapability to deal with them is much worse. So everyone is anticipating abuse of this tool even before a single case could take place, ever. I almost call that 'paranoia'...
  17. Only clans on the map? Poison for the immersion and all who embrace the historical approach. Would end as a big confusing mess because the diplomacy we have now walking on crutches would entirely fail, because with a myriad of three letter clans, you would hardly keep track of who is who and doing what and how you are supposed to behave opposite to them. Nations give some guidance, some roleplay, clear the picture. -- And the problem of infiltration and hostile actions within the group would just shift from national level to clan level entirely. Still despicable. So, what is won by omitting nations? I see only disadvantages.
  18. In real world you have all ways of countering a known spy. In this game our hands are tied and we have to watch them and leave them unharmed. It's encouraging for more crooks following up, don't you think? And spare me your advice, all this already done, we are no kiddies either. What I ask is a way to actively counter them, not stick the head into the sand and accept what you consider normal and enjoyable while others don't. And again, it is mostly the new players who get sunk because the spy reports their position and course. They cannot even imagine such treason is part of the game and some "3 years veterans" could possibly nod to all abuse being done.
  19. That is an idea. But still does not mean a countermeasure against someone serving in small boat in open world for another nation revealing to them the fleet buildup before port battle, trader traffic, and all that...
  20. Massive Multiplayer Online Gaming is a social activity such as others, and rules are necessary in all social activities. Because where people meet, the bad boys meet too. It does not help close the eyes and grant them freedom. Quite the opposite. If we don't fight abuse and exploits to damage others in other ways than intended by game design, it will just augment while being safe and unsanctioned, until nobody has fun anymore. While some "3 year veterans" are even happy to excuse abuse.
  21. Short time ago we had that case where a impersonator and false national stole the content of the warehouse of his clan. Of course the friends of espionage and damaging innocents will find ways to excuse this as well, and it is "no abuse of alt account" etc. Just let it happen to you, hypocrites. Under current mechanics this guy "Spirit of Paris" stays totally unharmed and can proceed to his liking, as nobody can take measures against him. You want that freedom? Why don't you join Pirates then? There maybe it is good custom to steal from your fellow player.
  22. All the worse, when you are in game for three years and have the nerve to deny espionage is costing (ship) lives.
  23. So, the only way is to let unfair players acting as spies bully those innocents who become their victims, when their ships get intercepted and sunk which otherwise would get through unharmed? As they would not have been reported to enemy nation if spies were caught and trialed?
  24. You have no idea. Or do you play naive? Of course they have, or why else are they there? I even gave you examples how spies are working in Open World. Of couse this is damaging.
