Game Introduction

Hello Game Labs.

From what I have read, I am very excited for Naval Action! However I do have a few questions. Will you be adding a skill tree for captains to train up? Will this skill tree (if you are adding one) be a train over time like EVE Online, or experience based like War Thunder and World of tanks? You mentioned that you will be creating an entirely new map for Naval Action and this raises the question, will piracy be based out of Nations like England and France, or will they have their own 'nation' on the map? Perhaps a better way for me to ask, is when creating your captain will piracy be a 'Nationality' or a career choice? Can I be an English pirate, for example?

I apologize if some of my questions have already been answered. I did my best to read this thread in full before posting this, but I may have missed something.

there is no clear outline of a game right now.

We are only testing shipcombat. ship to ship ofc.

As far as Ive read we will have some RvR content in the FAR future.

Also, as fasr as I know, devs are interested in economical content.

But right now all we know are SPECULATIONS. nothing clear on the horizon yet. All but its going to be a shipcombat game :D

Indeed, it's too early to know. I'm speculating about the privateering part, but the fact is, by what I have read on the pirate thread, it looks like there will be no Pirate nations, but rogue captains that belong to a nation.

This seems closer to reality then 'pirate nations' and for that reason alone I approve! That, and resupplying in Empire controlled ports as a rouge captain with a bounty on his head will be that much more terrifying. :)

  • Skill trees will be mostly passive - as you will have your hands full with firing and sailing
  • Skills will be XP based (certain skills will be census/time based). Some skills will could only be unlocked through certifications/exams.
  • Map not sure yet. Most likely there will be both options (random world), and current real world. We have not made a decision yet.
  • You can be an English Pirate yes.

Good enough for me! Thanks for clearing that up admin!

Eh, it reminds me back to Sea Dogs 2! When you're low on supplies, tired from a huge storm and battling and the crew going into disorder, you must dock! Sometimes the closest port is an enemy port, when I get there the fort sinks me :P

Good times :D

I never played that game!  :( But it gives me an idea. I wonder if some sort of 'grapevine' system could be introduced. For example, I am a rouge captain and I raid an NPC. I loot their wares, sink their ship and kill all the crew. No survivors means nobody but myself and my crew know it was I who raided that ship, therefore my bounty should not be increased. Now lets say I raided that ship and let them go, or they escaped, or my ship was sunk. They are then free to tell of the ordeal, and who it was who attacked them. Therefore my bounty with that Nation would be increased. Furthermore, if I attack a French vessel and my bounty is increased in France, would it also be increased in England, Spain, etc? Will the bounty system be a global bounty, or a national bounty? Will it's increase be universal, or will the amount be greater in the nation to which my target belonged, less with that nation's allies, and not change with that nation's enemies? I hope I'm making sense... :P

That idea makes sense, having an increased bounty when you left no survivors seems pretty dumb to me. Unless they lay out a message in a bottle :P

I always missed a system like this in Potbs!

Suggest that idea on the suggestion forums :)

Thank you for making my dream game!   How did you know that my 2 favorite ships were the HMS Surprise and the USS Constitution?   Just give me those 2 ships and an ocean to sail them on and I will be happy   :)  I hope "ranking up" to sail the better ships isn't too tedious, I never understood why people who spend 18 hours a day online get extra benefits, just playing that often should make them more skilled.

All I can say is this game looks beautiful so far. Now we just need some interesting quests, fun battles, etc...,. I just hope you guys at navalaction don't "raise the flag of surrender" half way thru development. I would really be disappointed if you did. This game has grabbed a lot of attention and many, many peeps would be disappointed if you did stop development. I would easily pay $60.00 for a game like this. Also you guys are selling the game on steam? Is the game going to be cross platform? Linux client (cross fingers).

Thank you Navalaction,

For what looks to be a very promising game!

I'm all for the privateering. Enough pirate games!  As for economy, here is a suggestion for devs: regular NPC merchant ships from afar approach each nation from distant trading areas. Each needs to get to port for the 'nation' to score some cash/resources. Players can choose to escort or hunt these prizes for reward either way. Each successful delivery raises the national treasury allowing improvements to shore installations and ships. Each merchant sunk takes resources to rebuild, but that takes priority.

Just a thought.

intesting idea, but the NPCs should not be push overs like in PotBS

Forgive me if this has been covered, or answered in another topic. But is this game going to be from a first person perspective ( FP captain walking your Quarter deck would be seriously awesome), or instead third person, with zoomed out ship combat like Pirates of the Burning sea?

I may be wrong but I believe it's first person, however if you scroll out you enter strategic viewing mode.

There are no avatars for players (yet).

Firing is from deck - almost a FPS view - but you cannot walk on decks

You can also zoom out with a mouse wheel to have a better look on the surroundings. But the zoom out is limited to not turn this into a strategy game.
