Classification societies:

Britain : Lloyd's Register (1760)

France: Bureau Veritas (1828)

US: American Bureau of Shipping (1862)

Norway: Det Norske Veritas (1864)

Germany: Germanishen Lloyd (1867)

Italy: Registro Italiano Navale (1861)

'classification society is a non govermental organisation that establishes and maintains technical standards for the construction and operation of ships and offshore structures. The society will also validate that construction is according to these standards and carry out regular surveys in service to ensure compliance with the standards.'          ...wiki quote ;)

As i mentioned in some post before, this kind organizations could be used in game for example to register ships name, or obtain historical ship name to be able in use by player.
