There is an argument to be made that ships from 1650 onward should be included, the line tactics were implemented after all.

Armament and hull wise i think they would not be severely outclassed. Mainly rigging wise and their sailing performance that is rather underdeveloped.

Maybe its an option, in a distant future, to get a dedicated server for the early timeframe.

I was looking at Admiraal de Ruyter a little bit just now and I can't count 90 guns, she seems to have 36 gunports, assuming another 4 on her bow this would maker her an 80 gun ship, am I missing something or is there a mistake somewhere? When looking at wiki and things it seems to suggest that she is an 80 gunner, not a 90. I had a flick through Robert Gardener's "Warships of the Napoleonic Era" but sadly the book only mentions a couple of dutch ships from the republican period, not the Napoleonic occupation and only contains plans for Prince Frederic (64), Tromp (54), Heldin (28), Sirene (24), Havik (16) and De Braak (16) as recorded by the British.

As Roelandus mentioned above me, the ships were refitted during their lifetime. Maybe i should take a step back and start from the beginning.

The Wreeker/Wreker-Class is a ship design from Pieter Glavimans, which received approval in 1795. In total 7 ships would be build according to his plans.

  • Wreker/Wreeker (spelling differs in nearly all sources) 1798
  • Chatham   1799
  • Admiraal Zoutman    1800
  • Admiraal de Ruyter   1806
  • Leeuw   1806
  • Admiraal de Ruyter   1808
  • Admiraal Evertsen   1808

In this topic you can find the plans of Wreker, Chatham, Admiraal de Ruyter (1806) and Leeuw.

Luckily, loads of reference material exists of these ships, i even heard that the lines of the Admiraal Zoutman are in possession of the french archives! (I would not have a clue where to start regarding that, so i'll leave that be)

That as a mere sidenote, the ships were refitted during their lifespan (all of them) yet not simultaneous. To illustrate this i have included a list of the dutch Naval strength around 1806:

To get back on the refitting topic, here is a ship plan from an 80 version:

zHu4L8F.png

The plan above is the Wreker. Before the refit of the Chatham, a wooden model was made:

038e7c1593cc37ff780597f343158ae6.jpg

These ships would sail around with 36-pounders on their main gun deck, 30-pounders on her upper gun deck and 12-pounders on the forecastle and quarterdeck.

To illustrate the refitted version:

t6sEsv1.png

The plan above is the De Ruyter (1806). The refit keep the 12-pounders and add 36-pounder carronades to it.

Some sources mention the upper gundeck changing from 30 to 24, some continue on 30.

It seems like they utilized the gangways to create a flush semi-open top deck, completely stacked with carronades.

And i think that were all your questions IIRC.

I have some ultrahigh-res plans of the Chatham, sadly due to copyright i don't think i can share them here.

Aye, the Venus. A lovely little vessel. Fully rigged - competetor to the rattlesnake which is our only corvet ingame. I hope to give her a chance in the next ship poll that might come out sometime in the future.

Modeling wise I am about done. There needs to be optimization and the quarterdeck appears empty.

But other than that she is finished - finally :P

sooo.. I had a nice chat with Steel and figured - why not see how the few dutch vessels I modeled compare to each other. What better way than scaling them correctly (approx) and merging them into one Blender project.

And voila. Here you go:

Can you guess all of these vessels' names?

(aye I know that unfinishes vessel is a hard hard guess)

Taking the top picture from left to right the most left ship is the Admiraal de Ruyter SoL ( after refit, 90 guns, 1806) then we have the most famous Dutch ship the 7 Provinciën SoL (82 guns, 1665), can't tell because of the position of the ship and lack of features, the Venus ( 20 guns, 1806) and as last i don't remember that one

The only plans that I can find with 11 gun ports per side is the bombard corvette posted above.  (Though I did cheat by looking at the ships modeled by Naval Dilettant)

Edit:  That would also mean the otherwise unidentifiable model would be his 44 gunner, making it the Beschermer.

Ahwell the foremost gunports are bridle ports. no space to put any cannons there. So she is a 20 gun bombard vessel. So yeah she is the very model you can find on my sketchfab account. She is dated 1818 - more info wont come from my side. The resolution is not expecially good but you may be able to count the guns sticking out of the other corvet.

The unidetified vessel is not a two decked vessel. However she does have two thick wales running her whole length.

A method you could use to estimate ship lengths: The way I scaled the models alongside each other is to use the blender units (the squares you see) and scale them to a known vessel. That way you could estimate dimensions ;) But dont take them for granted. They are rather rough estimates to begin with. (I couldnt be arsed to be precise :P). What I find very interesting is that you can see all of the vessels' draught. How deep they lay in the water. (frontview). I now added the hullmodel I made from the constitution on the right. (I cannot repeat enough - these dimensions are not on spot!)

you can find the 44 gun SoL on my sketchfab. But she is not in that little tease shoot I gave you above. And I am not convinced on her. I wanted the dutch hector - my plan is a british vessel with different lines.

Ok, my calculations give the mysterious ship roughly a 17 ft draught, with a length of around 160 ft.  This coupled with the new information that isn't a two decked vessel make me guess that it's either the Amphirite or Eendracht (both 40 gun frigates).

Edit:  Of course it could also be the 44 gun Phoenix if you found it's plans.

Well. I gave it some time but nobody jumped on your suggestions. Your estimations are about 15% off. Nobody to blame here since I didnt scale the vessels with 100% accuracy.

Now here are news on that vessel. Nope. No name. But I did have too much spare time lately:

enjoy and let the speculations continue :)
