Ganking was when guys would camp outside KPR in Renomees and pounce on Midshipmen in Cutters and Yachts that had no chance to defend themselves. If you're moving a trader with no escort and you fall victim to a commerce raider, well that's just the way it goes. If you want to trade and sail without having to worry about being raided, go to PVE. Otherwise, join a clan and have some escorts go with you, but nothing is fool proof. You can't play on a PVP server without taking a risk, that's how the game is designed.

Fargo, you DO realize the penalty for speed is HP, right?  That BALANCE.

I'll never understand why these big-ship captains allow themselves to be tagged when the other ship is right on top of them...  If I have to work my way up to a Connie in a speed Surprise, I'm as good as dead...

Have you looked at this balancing? I have. In short, fast builds are way too weak, heavy builds are way too slow. Bermuda planks were bad already, but teak/bermuda was atleast a decent compromise between speed and combat capability. Now even this is no option anymore.

What can the connie do? Trying to cut your top masts before you get close is probably her best option. Good luck with that if youre not experienced. And the surp is loaded with sail repairs.

If I cut a mast down, and the person goes to sail repair I switch to hull shots and cause hull damage while they repair their sails.   Once that 90sec repair is over, I go right back to the sails and mast.  Next time they have a choice, repair the hull and be immobile, or have sails and sink.

I started this thread not just because ganks happen but because that's how a lot of players play the game. Add defensive tags, tagging ai fleets and then leave the battle or staying in a battle waiting for someone to tell you to pop out and attack someone that's going by close to the battle instance just make this whole play style detrimental to the overall experience in the game.

Maybe this is how it is and it will never change. In that case we'll, Legends will come out at some point

You're going to get people sitting on top of battle markers regardless, until they come up with more changed to protect people leaving a battle there's nothing else you can do. If you're just wanting to attack AI fleets and do missions, you should probably consider moving to the PVE server, you'd always have your PVP character to fall back on if you want to PB's or PVP. But you're always gonna be at risk after a battle on PVP even if they aren't sitting on the marker.

Unwilling combat and without a definitive advantage ?

Heheh I don't know I got jumped by a Endmyon the other day in my Traders Brig.... Took him nearly 45 min to take me... I knocked his sails down to 74% or so and he repaired,, I knocked them down to 82% again and he repaired.. I had few repairs and was at 54% hen he finally took a mast top off... Iocked him in Irons 2 times and the 2nd time I was 15 sec from escape when he got a single LONG range hit to my sails...  So even getting ganked can be fun if you make them work for it:)

I was accused of ganking an indefatigable in a Cerberus because the inde is a 'pve' ship. Despite having 150 more BR.

Carebears will never be satisfied.

Thats ok I saw someone lose a Hamburg last night to an Endy... not sure how that is possible given the maneuverability of the Hamburg and the fact it is a Beast

Universal is that we all hit Sail knowing full well of the options in play. Or do we... ?

After reading through this post again, I would say there were 7 or 8 different idea's on what ganking is. You can't fix something that can't be defined.

Next time you get ganked by 6 or 7 guys make sure you say thank you and good fight at the end. If me and some clan mates go out in big ships, nobody will attack us EVER. Gank squads only pick fights with no risk. That takes a lot of skill

Planned attacks by good thinking captains should always choose an engagement where they set the advantage, preferably before the battle starts. The old phrase 'there is safety in numbers' rings loudly true in this game and others like it.  If you're not getting 'ganked' when you have an escort, get an escort more often. Some smart traders, assuming that's the soul target of ganks, share trade profits for potential escorts.  Hell, some of us will escort traders just for the sake of possible action without fee.  AND some of us who like PVP will intentionally bait enemies by sailing trade vessels with our mates in tow or nearby in waiting.

You dont like a challenge in an outnumbered battle? A little disappointing

Looking at your recent 'Surprise Video'  I would argue if you were targeted, while being outnumbered and if your opponents were successful, I could see that being considered a gank.  So what is it when you counter a gank with better tactics and sailing?  Counter-Gank seems simple, but let's brainstorm a little.

But, these tactics are present in most EVERY PVP game, especially open world sandbox ones. Legends will be instant action and likely have a far less risk vs. reward model.  For some reason I imagine tall sailing meets world of warships.  Doesn't take a lot of coordination to queue up in any instant action environment, and for me personally can get boring.  I guess I like conquest and roleplaying socio-economic political stuffs a little more than that.

Add needing a trendy name for counter-ganking to the list.
