  1. 31 out of 35 for me. The only fail I could have gotten right was the battle involving the largest amount of soldiers in the whole war. Others were too specific for me :s. Lots of guesses as well. PS : Although I got it right I'm not sure about the one asking which city capture blocked the Mississippi river. Gallagher argues that after the fall of New Orleans the Mississipi was already a blocked river for the Confederacy.
  2. I enjoy the Civil War because all it's generals are Napoleon wannabees (refer to my profile pic if you need a proof).
  3. Yes end of timer means u're going to fight the second day provided you didn't take Cemetary Ridge on time. It's advised to not loose a single minute once you've received those troops. However it's pretty doable to win on day one, it's generally what most CSA players try to go for and most of the time they are succesful.
  4. It won't. You'll be able to pick up were you left it.
  5. Reminds me of that rather funny episode in april 1865 when the ANV was trying to escape Virginia. US cavalry managed to capture a wagon train along with 400 rebels. Inside the wagons they found confederate notes and couldn't resist the temptation to gather all the prisonners to hand them over their 'pay'. Needless to say those bills were entirely worthless at this point.
  6. This song puts every modern satirist to shame. Whatever happened to witty humor ?
  7. Odd. Josey Wales is a rather famous movie, even in France. I was like 6 when I saw it for the first time.
  8. Maybe he parked it in some Cold Harbor for the duration of the conflict. With all these anacondas running around it would have been a wise decision.
  9. Oddly enough I first heard that song while watching Veep. Quite an hilarious scene as well PS : Although i revere Tenessee Ernie Ford I prefer the 2nd South Carolina String Band version
  10. As for the fact that many officers rose high despite their young age it's the very nature of war that is the cause of it. War is by excellence a matter that cannot be trifled with and eventually as the conflict drags on skill becomes the only factor taken into account. That is why you'd see 24 yo like Upton (USA) or JH Kelly (CSA) become Brigadier General thus outranking many of their senior. For that very same reason Grant and Sherman became untouchable despite their (unjustified?) reputation (drunkard/madman). Forrest is another good example as he became a Lt General despite his lack of diplomacy/civility.
  11. You can put more than one but in separate posts so the thread remains easy to read. Here's another one I really enjoy. Great historical value as well as it portrays the increasing role of working women in times of mass-mobilization.
  12. I've thought about making such a thread for a long time. Hopefully this will all help us build the perfect gaming playlist for UGCW The rules are simple : Only post one song per post (to avoid confusion and spamming) and if possible leave out the most obvious ones ('Battle cry of freedom' for example) My choice goes to Abe's retreat, a very catchy fiddle tune
  13. What happened to the guy who fired the shots btw ? Did he get punished in any way ?
  14. On a similar note do you have example of units hitting the 'veterancy threshold' ? By that I mean examples of veteran brigades who eventually lost their elan after a prolonged exposition to fighting (the Overland campaign fx) likely to cause PTSD and homesickness.
  15. In the case of the stonewall brigade it is known that before Bull Run they had been heavily drilled in bayonet practice which gave them an obvious edge for their first major engagement. For the Iron Brigade it's not so much the command (3 different commanders up to 1863) but the nature of the men that composed it : hard-fighting frontiersmen with plenty of rifle experience. Eventually those 'elite' units tend to build their own culture and pride which reinforce their cohesion. I'm pretty sure that a coward fighting in such a brigade would simply turn brave because of the sheer weight of social convention. In simpler words, you don't want to disappoint your fighting comrades. There are also cases of brigades with varying performance however. The Irish Brigade did very poorly at Bull Run, poorly at Antietam but behaved with utmost gallantry at Fredericksburg.
  16. I did, turns out I only had to go to online mode to fix it. Weird stuff.
  17. Everytime I fire up the game in steam it's windows pops up for a few seconds then disappears, not matter how many times I try. Any workaround for this ?
  18. If you think of cost efficiency the m1855 and the enfield 53 are the best choices. You can equip two entire corps with them (even on hard where weapons capture is lowered) and they aren't that inferior to fayettevile or m1863. Buy as much as you can with rep and money.
  19. Lol you're on legendary XD. Run away don't try anything else. The way this mode works now makes it almost impossible without nasty exploits. I'm struggling at Shiloh currently ! Union has nothing but 3k brigades all equipped with Harper Ferrys while my boys mostly use muskets...
  20. They make it sound like a joke but a retreat is truly the best option Someone on steam posted an interesting alternative : hold dunker church but do not fight at the sunken road, let them enter the gap and use cover wherever you can to gain an advantage until you bleed them enough to be able to retake the sunken road. A costly strategy however since it includes an offensive push with tired troops.
  21. Weird you should have been over-run or even flanked by the AI for a cap of your own point. Guess I'll try your move
  22. I can confirm that the hard campaign is pretty rough and resembles exactly what you described : shortages in guns, men, reputation, only the money's ok. If you don't decide to go for a 1st day victory you'll definitly enjoy Cold Harbor Btw how did you get that early victory ? It's supposed to be almost impossible.
  23. The new hard campaign has a reduced difficulty now (ennemy strength is only +15% instead of 25%) which makes it a bit easier : AI has improved imo and apart from a few scenarios he'll make better use of his numbers. I'd encourage those how struggled / did'nt enjoy fighting doom stacks before to retry Major General (from the start) and see how it goes.
  24. To be honest (and a bit patriotic) French armies of the time were dominant in almost every field (a short lived advantage however). Infantry units were full of veterans trained in the revolutionary wars, artillery had benefited from substantial technological breakthroughs in the 1780's and Napoleon revolutionized the cavalry by massing them in large divisions, giving them a huge tactical superiority against their european counterparts. Even the mighty prussians couldn't do much against it (look up the battle of Auerstaedt for more hindsight on the matter).
