I'm not a specialist but i think in real life when you have like 0 km\h and you make turn to left in your cars then you still be at this same place, at this same position

with a boat you can still turn though due to you being in a fluid, currents will pass your rudder and hull turning the ship and the wind will the the same, however it is usually quite slow and can be tricky depending on where the current comes from and wind(speaking from personall experiance in a sailboat with sails down(granted the mast is still there...)

In real life, generally, unless there is a crap ton of wind, your ability to apply rudder to change heading if you are not under sail is impossible - if the wind is strong enough to defeat the current/waves, the boat will "weathervane" to turn either its bow or stern into the wind (whichever is closest to the direction from which the wind is coming), otherwise the boat swirls in the current/waves. The rudder, if water is not passing over it, is useless. If the wind is acting on the boat to give it a little bit of speed, the bow can be turned downwind by deploying a sea anchor - effectively creating drag by putting a sail over the side rigged in such a way as to catch the water.

The current game's turning action pretends that you have put out boats to pull the bow one way or the other, or that you have anchors and are using their rodes to kedge the bow back and forth.

I agree that I think the speed at which you can currently turn with no masts and/or no sails deployed is too high and should be reduced by half.

Well there is another aspect to it.

Based on the consultants advice a ship itself provides enough surface area and can be moved if the wind is strong.

In the picture provided the enemy still has 2 sails on the front of the ship and could get minor side force:

  • ship itself could be moved by the wind
  • side force from the sails left could adjust the turn

Of course in real life it would be much slower and would not happen this way.

Also remember that you are looking at this from the 100-1000th battle perspective - you have been playing a lot and it all seems easy for you. For a newbie it is all different.

We think that some rotation should be allowed without the sails, but agree that it could be lowered, and should A LOT smaller (or 0) on high level ships (which you get when you are experienced)

great job on the fight by the way. demasting santi in a frigate takes skill.

I'm fine with it staying, but would like to see it knocked way down above, say, Brigs.  So you have the Brigs to get squares figured out, and then above that your turn rate when stopped or in irons (with sails not in manual to turn the vessel through rig imbalance) is extremely reduced.  That's a great compromise.
