  1. Agree....^^ Realism outside weapons(Ballistics/Cofficient(ranges/fall off) is a difficult thing to achieve... Lets face it,,With realistic weapon behavior ingame, the numbers will be askewed. Some Players have a lack of knowledge with period tactics(me included). Cannonade/Batteries/charging of positions(Batteries/front lines) in game. This result's is a slaughter with a high unrealistic number being killed. With Cannonade particularly which in turn does reflect unrealistic numbers killed with the weapon's/war. I have found that the proper use as far as 1 can utilize in game will reflect a more realistic outcome in Numbers/situation killed. With David's Posts, he does his home work n is well read/learnt/educated on the subject, which promps me to do my own research/reading(Hobby) for my own satisfication/curiosity. One point that I never knew, or read about until David mentioned it. Which is largely ignored in historical writings. Front line troops would adopt the prone position, when in a fire fight in certain battles/situations(Open Field/Area)... Perryville comes to mind, here is a copy n paste --- For four years – from Shiloh to the last battle – these four Tennessee regiments of Maney’s Brigade, Cheatham’s Division, were comrades in arms, each assured of the support of the other in critical emergencies. Captain Malone’s account of the Perryville battle is as follows:.... .......and in the field I saw the 41st Georgia and the 6th and 9th Tennessee Regiments lying on the ground, engaged in a bitter fight with the line of the enemy on the edge of the hill in their front, which was supported by Parsons’s Battery of eight, '12-pound Napoleon guns. It seemed to me that our men could not have maintained our position at all but for the fact that old Turner – the best artilleryman, but the poorest drilled man in the army https://busenbarkcivilwar.wordpress.com/2011/09/03/ningan-steele-lindsey27th-tennessee-infantry/ --- Hell of a charge there,, that took balls to run into those Cannons/Supporting Infantry. ----- With that said there is problems with artillery/Melee/ ranges, but is a wip. But these things are relative minor...imo/ but none the less at times quite irritating.....but is being looked into/fix/patch...if I read correctly..... I believe the next project(Sharpsburg) will be a lot better as the Dev. has posted, with engine improvements,,etc...

  7. An Idea: @ husserl that post #6 would be nice if you could repost that in the tutorial Thread? Better still Start a New Thread .....UG:G 'Battlefield Tactics'.....Pinned I seen also that you have posted some other good Battlefield tactics in other threads that seems, good/proven..... This I believe would open discussions as to why certain Players in the same circumstances will think their Tactic is Better/Superior... 8. .................... * During the morning and the mid-afternoon of July 2, the infantrymen and cannoneers of both armies made ready for renewed war. The Federals dug trenches, built abatis and felled trees to open lines of fire. Rations were cooked, brought to the front and quickly dispersed. Water, which was scarce, was rationed and shared among friends. Cartridges were unloaded off the ammunition trains, and each soldier saw to it that his pouch was full. Muskets were cleaned, bayonets sharpened. The familiar ritual was a shield against the accursed gods of war, against death, and against the terrible wounds that had so shocked their tender sensibilities when the war first began, but that now no longer caused distress. These Yankees were veteran infantrymen; they had seen the elephant. Now they waited. Across the way, their enemies in butternut and gray did much the same. Their rations were not quite as good, but they had better access to water, and by now they had managed to equip themselves with the standard 1863-era musket, their home-brought smoothbores and shotguns a thing of the past. But the Rebels were expecting to make an assault, and their haversacks, many stamped with the initials U.S., were lightened of all but the essentials. Sometime after noon, Confederate Major Joseph W. Latimer had gotten the 16 guns of Snowden Andrew's Maryland Battalion and the Rockbridge Artillery from II Corps' artillery reserve on the heights of Benner's Hill, a small rise about 1,400 yards northeast of Cemetery Hill. The 20-year-old boy major had distinguished himself... -------------------------- ** Along the northern slope of Culp's Hill, the Federal line was held by Brig. Gen. James Wadsworth's division, or more accurately, what was left of it. The day before, July 1, the two brigades of the division, the legendary Iron Brigade and the hard-fighting 2nd Brigade, had suffered more than 50 percent casualties in a heroic effort to stave off the determined assaults of three Confederate divisions. That they eventually failed was inevitable, but the price extracted from their enemy was exorbitant. While the casualty list for I Corps was swollen with the names of brave men, the fighting spirit of the remnant was not diminished............. http://www.civilwar.org/battlefields/gettysburg/gettysburg-history-articles/confederate-general-richard.html Map.... http://www.civilwar.org/battlefields/gettysburg/maps/danielladyfarmmap.html *************************** An image which shows how completely Wadsworth identified with his men was provided by a messenger who rode by Wadsworth on the evening of this first day at Gettysburg: "We found General Wadsworth sitting on a stone fence by the roadside, his head bowed in grief, the most dejected woe-begone person one would likely find on a world-around voyage--a live picture of Despair: General Reynolds killed, the first corps decimated a full half, and its first division almost wiped out of existence. The General greeted us warmly, adding, 'I am glad you were not with us this afternoon.'" On evening of July 2, just as the defences of Culp's Hill were being stripped to provide reinforcements for the embattled Federal left, Wadsworth's remnants were closest at hand when Ed Johnson's Stonewall Division came rushing up the hill toward "Old Pop" Greene's lone Twelfth Corps brigade on the right. http://www.rocemabra.com/~roger/tagg/generals/general03.html EDIT: Added more...

  11. There are few more heart-rendering stories from the Battle of Gettysburg than that of Captain Michael P. Spessard, a forty one year-old native of Craig County, Virginia, who commanded Company C, 28th Virginia Infantry in Garnett’s Brigade of Pickett’s Division, and his son Hezekiah Spessard, a private under his father’s command... Their lives would forever be changed on July 3, 1863, when, barely minutes into the charge against the Union center, Hezekiah fell from the ranks, seriously wounded. Eppa Hunton, Jr., son of the dynamic Colonel Eppa Hunton who commanded the 8th Virginia Infantry, first described the scene in his father’s 1933 autobiography: “My father has frequently told me that as he was going into the battle he saw Major (then captain) Spessard of the 28th Regiment sitting on the ground holding a youth’s head is his lap. As Father approached, Spessard looked up and said, ‘Look at my poor boy, Colonel.’ He must have been dead then, for in a short time Father saw him kiss him tenderly and gently lay his head on the ground. Then the Major rose to his feet, put his sword to his shoulder, and ordered, ‘Forward, boys!’ and continued in the charge.” *********** What did happen to the Spessards after the charge? Tim Mallick, of northern Virginia, investigated this story, initially seeking only to determine what Confederate field hospital treated the younger Spessard and where he is buried. He found Private Spessard’s military service records for at the National Archives, and they noted that he died on July 19, 1863. There were no details on the location or circumstances of his death, nor his final resting place. If he died after July 3, then it had to be in a field hospital, but where? https://npsgnmp.wordpress.com/2012/02/16/my-poor-boy-colonel-the-story-of-michael-and-hezekiah-spessard/
  12. History: The brigade took pride in its designation, "1st Brigade, 1st Division, I Corps", under which it played a prominent role in the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg, July 1, 1863. It repulsed the first Confederate offensive through Herbst's Woods, capturing much of Brig. Gen. James J. Archer's brigade, and Archer himself. ----- The 6th Wisconsin (along with 100 men of the ***brigade guard) are remembered for their famous charge on an unfinished railroad cut north and west of the town, where they captured the flag of the 2nd Mississippi and took hundreds of Confederate prisoners. ****“Iron Brigade Guard -was a detail of 100 soldiers picked from each of the five regiments of the brigade. It was organized on June 22, 1863 as the Army of the Potomac marched into Pennsylvania. It was made up of 20 men from each regiment as well as one sergeant and one corporal from each regiment. The guard was commanded by three officers. -On the morning of July 1, 1863, the Iron Brigade Guard was divided into two companies and placed on each flank of the 6th Wisconsin. It joined in the successful charge on the unfinished railroad cut. More than 200 Confederates and the flag of the 2nd Mississippi were captured. -In the lull in the fighting at noon July 1, The Iron Brigade Guard was released and the soldiers returned to their own regiments. It suffered about 30 casualties in the fighting at the railroad cut. ********* The Iron Brigade was also hotly engaged at South Mountain, Antietam, The Wilderness and Spotsylvania. It was organized in August, 1861, at which time it was composed of the three Wisconsin regiments and the Nineteenth Indiana. In October, 1862, the Twenty-fourth Michigan was added. The Second Wisconsin and Nineteenth Indiana did not reenlist, and so were mustered out, respectively, in June and August, 1864. During the Wilderness campaign the Seventh Indiana was attached to the brigade, but it was mustered out in August. The First New York Sharpshooters' Battalion was also attached to the brigade at one time, joining it in the fall of 1863. In February, 1865, the brigade was broken up, the Twenty-fourth Michigan having been ordered to Baltimore. The Sixth and Seventh Regiments remained in the First Brigade, Third Division (Crawford's), Fifth Corps, while the Sharpshooters' Battalion was assigned elsewhere. General John Gibbon commanded the Iron Brigade at Manassas, South Mountain, and Antietam; General Meredith, at Gettysburg; and General Cutler at the Wilderness. Cutler was succeeded in 1864, by General Edward S. Bragg,-- formerly Colonel of the Sixth Wisconsin -- an officer of marked ability and an intrepid soldier. ***** There was another organization, in the Army of the Potomac, known as the Iron Brigade, and it was in the same division with the "Iron Brigade of the West." It was composed of the Second United States Sharpshooters, the Twenty-second, Twenty-fourth, Thirtieth, and Eighty-fourth New York, forming Hatch's (1st) Brigade, First Division, First Corps. But the Twenty-second, Twenty-fourth, and Thirtieth New York were two years regiments, and were mustered out in May, 1863, thereby breaking up the organization. The Eighty-fourth New York (14th Brooklyn) was an exceptionally fine regiment, while the other regiments in the brigade made a reputation, also, as efficient commands. It seems strange that two brigades in the same division should adopt like synonyms; but, in justice to Hatch's Brigade, it should be stated that it was the original Iron Brigade, and that Gibbon's Brigade was not known by that title until after Antietam, at which time it was so designated by a war correspondent, who was apparently unaware of his lack of originality. In proportion to its numbers this brigade sustained the heaviest loss of any in the war. The brigade proper contained only the five regiments mentioned; and, yet, its aggregate of losses is exceeded in only one instance. At Manassas, under command of General Gibbon, the first four regiments named lost 148 killed, 626 wounded, and 120 missing; total, 894, out of about 2,000 engaged. At Gettysburg, General Meredith commanding, the five regiments were engaged, losing 162 killed, 724 wounded, and 267 missing; a total of 1,153 casualties, out of 1,883 engaged, or 61 per cent. Most of the missing at Gettysburg were killed or wounded. The Iron Brigade commanders, disregarding temporary assignments, were: Brig. Gen. Rufus King: September 28, 1861 – May 7, 1862 Brig. Gen. John Gibbon: May 7, 1862 – November 4, 1862 Brig. Gen. Solomon Meredith: November 25, 1862 – July 1, 1863 (wounded at Gettysburg) The Iron Brigade lost its all-Western status on July 16, 1863, following its crippling losses at Gettysburg, when the 167th Pennsylvania was incorporated into it. However, the brigade that succeeded it, which included the survivors of the Iron Brigade, was commanded by: Col. William W. Robinson (of the 7th Wisconsin): July 1, 1863 – March 25, 1864 Brig. Gen. Lysander Cutler (6th Wisconsin): March 25, 1864 – May 6, 1864 Col. William W. Robinson: May 6, 1864 – June 7, 1864 Brig. Gen. Edward S. Bragg (6th Wisconsin): June 7, 1864 – February 10, 1865 Col. John A. Kellogg (6th Wisconsin): February 28, 1865 – April 27, 1865 Col. Henry A. Morrow (24th Michigan): April 27, 1865 – June 5, 1865............. * http://thomaslegion.net/iron_brigade_civil_war_history_of_the_famous_iron_brigade.html ++++++++++++++ Yet Pettigrew's men had also run into a stone wall. When his "Tar Heels" waded Willoughby Run and ascended the wooded slope of the Herbst Farm woods (mistakenly called "McPherson's Woods" by some participants), they ran headlong into the "Iron Brigade". Major Jones of the 26th North Carolina Infantry Regiment recalled: "The fighting was terrible- our men advancing, the enemy stubbornly resisting, until the two lines were pouring volleys into each other at a distance not greater than 20 paces." During one of the last charges, the 26th's twenty one year-old colonel, Harry Burgwyn, grasped the regimental flag and led his men up to the faces of the 24th Michigan Infantry. As Burgwyn turned to see his men follow him, he was struck through the side by a bullet that spun him around and flat to the ground. Lt. Colonel Lane picked up the flag and continued to encourage his men in the charge leaving the 26th's mortally wounded commander to the care of others. Within minutes, Lane was also shot, the bullet passing through his neck muscles, shattering his jaw and knocking out several teeth. Remarkably Lane survived his horrible wound, though Colonel Burgwyn died that evening. The Iron Brigade's soldiers were down to their last cartridges and the position was beginning to break. Heavy losses and the arrival of fresh Confederate units compelled the Union regiments to give way, but losses in the Confederate ranks were equally bad and included many regimental and company officers. Among those severely injured was General Heth, wounded while directing his troops around the stubborn Union defense on the McPherson Farm. A Union bullet struck the general a glancing blow to the head though it could have been much worse- he was wearing a new hat that he had stuffed the interior sweat band with newspaper for a proper fit. The bullet hit at such an angle that it ringed the inside of his hat, knocking him senseless and leaving a mark around his scalp similar to a burn. General Pettigrew took command of the division as the dazed Heth was helped from the field. http://thomaslegion.net/battleofgettysburgmcphersonsridge.html ********************************* Other Iron Brigades: There have been other brigades known by the same nickname. Use of the Iron Brigade name is not taken lightly in the U.S. Army, and the present-day units that have taken Iron Brigade as their nickname have proven themselves in battle as worthy to hold the name. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_Brigade
  13. This should be in the Support Forum,,, but...... Try this n Hopefully the game will work properly... This will give you Problems if an Old Saved game is loaded into a new Update/Patched game... Your best bet now is to start with a Clean install to eliminate that as your problem first. To make sure, Do what I do for a Fresh Install with no old files lurking around: Delete the old Patched build completely..... After you un-install/remove UG:G content/game... Than Delete these 2 UG:G folder/Leftovers, prior to re-downloading. First...Delete the UG:G Folder in Steam, C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Ultimate General Gettysburg Than Delete the UG:G folder located in here(Saved Games/Options).... C:\Users\*User Name*\AppData\LocalLow\Game Labs Than I run CCleaner(optional) to get the junk left over in the register...~5-7 reg entries... This ensures that no old code is sticking around, n u will now have a Clean/New install... Hope this helps... Still need help just post. Someone is always here to help ,, ,, G/L hope u get it up n running.... Edit,,,,PC, perhaps next time mention that in the OP, Mac/PC Win?/OS... n than I wouldn't of wasted your time n mine'...
  14. The rout is being addressed,, the next patch is being tested there lots of new things being added. The Routing bug is an pain in the butt for all..
  15. Yes you need to be a Tester to get into the closed Forum. Testing Beta builds/Patches before they go public, give feed back etc.. If you would like to be a tester, if there still excepting. Just send a message to Nick Thomadis, requesting to be a Tester, that's what I did.
  16. Randall, I have posted my dislikes with this game, my complaints which mirror yours to a point. I like the game, it has a lot of good potential. I can't see myself getting my ass in a knot over disjointed battle flow(as an example), like you. Do what I do learn to live with it, its such a small problem / non-existing with most everyone. I am a optimist, I look at the potential this game has going forward. I enjoy playing the game (249 hrs). Now personal attacks on Players/Posters when, and if they say things that just doesn't agree with yours. There's a big difference with showing respect, and brown nosing, where mine is the former. Seems like you have agenda since you showed up here. Find problems with and not limited to (Game / Game Play / Developers, and their decisions going forward. / People that like n enjoy the game(regardless of its short comings.) Verbal hissing / insulting me(trying to make me look like a 0.10 cent fool) because I enjoy this game n have respect for the Developers. We? who is this we? Search Party for a Backbone? Trying to add weight to you post by adding the 'We'? An ass kisser I am not. I give credit where credit is due. I respect the Developers for their integrity, their willingness to listen / work with the community. You do not realize that the Developers have put to use some good suggestions that were generated in these forums by Players. These suggestions are now implemented to a degree into the Game. Asking for feedback after patches, answering questions in a timely manner. Keeping us informed with upcoming patches etc etc. Randall you are 65 yrs old, a man that that has a impressive resume, working in the Gaming World(producing/publishing). I would expect from your colorful past, that you would conduct yourself in a more professional manner here. I have paid a lot more $ for a game, that was just crap, I felt that I was ripped off n Got pissed off. I seen their glaring mistakes in game. Sure I posted my dislikes. But what I didn't do was, go to the game's/Developers forum's than post in a way with veiled / disrespectful comments like some do, so when read were basically rude / attacking / insulting, and Belittling. If you have more to say to me take it to the PM,I will not get into a shit slinging contest here in the public forum. This way you can air you dislike for me because, basically I show a optimistic favorable view towards, people / Products I like(car, pc,etc), State my likes / Dislikes for Game's / Developers etc.in a respectable manner. I sent you a PM earlier before I read that post^ I went as far as to complement you in that PM. Did I make a mistake wording that PM Randall? I fear I have.... This thread has evolved into something resembling, a Dog chasing his tail,,, Going nowhere, not accomplishing anything, but just hurting others, raising peoples ire / birse to a degree........ Good Character is best Kept, Than trying to Recover........ Edit..... Randall,,with ur post,, me Angry no,,Upset no,, My attitude is always euthymic. My ire has never been raised here just my eye brows when reading some posts.... scatological> you are correct,,,, point taken,,,, cloyingly deferential, yes I can see your point. And your reference to my pretty head, thx.. I been told that all my life by the pretty girls,,,,,
  17. I have to agree^ I was kind of taken aback with that sentence, when I read it. Although I have thrown gas onto the fire, I do want my criticism to be felt as constructive, and the Last thing I want is to down right insult the Devs/Game. I wouldn't put up with that ^... People need to put the shoe on the other foot for moment when in discussions, and look at things from a different prospective. The Developers with all their Hard work,, really long hours / the stress coupled with worry of the Success or Failure. The Gamble a company takes, charting new territory with a brand new game + starting from scratch is quite the undertaking. These crass / witless statements in posts must stop(There ignorant! n insulting!), or the Developers will stop trying to reach out to the community. A person will stop extending his hand / reaching out to the community, for every time he does some ungrateful s.o.b. takes a shit in it!
  18. Its not what you said that's irritating, but how you put it! Especially this comment!!!!!! **I do not think that the company, with its whole future at stake, has been well served by a group of testers who appear to be, as a whole, enthusiastic, well-read, erudite, experienced game players. And I do not know why they did not do a better job pointing out this fatal flaw.[/b]
  19. In the example you gave: A Confederate Player is waiting for a Union Opponent . If a Union Player was waiting he would be in the Avaible Union Player
  20. Same Problem Not being able to access Steam Overlay while in Game. I can access The steam overlay while playing the iPad beta, or any other steam Game. I noticed this problem, after the install of patch 1.03 iirc,...
  21. Great update news, it sounds really interesting. (I really like the artillery moving a little faster)/(Artillery will be more vulnerable in direct projectile attacks.) (Artillery vs Artillery Damage increase.) I would see batteries delivering direct hits, time n time again into batteries without them taking any casualties/damage. ------- I seen when a battery fires canisters, half +, of the shots strike the ground, trailing forward in front of the cannons. Visually it look likes maybe 20-30% strikes/reaches the enemy......just an observation,, Perhaps modify how Canisters balls are Delivered(visually) forward into the enemy. Unless this is implemented in the game, which I doubt... >>>At times, trained artillerists would fire the canister shot towards the ground in front of advancing enemy troops, causing the conical pattern to flatten out as the balls ricocheted and skipped off the terrain. This in effect widened the killing zone. An example of this tactic was at the first day of Gettysburg where Lt. James Stewart's Battery B, 2nd U.S. Artillery on Seminary Ridge skipped canister shot at Alfred M. Scales's approaching Confederate infantry, breaking up their attack and forcing them to take cover in a depression.<<< http://www.thefullwiki.org/Canister_shot
  22. I had 4-7 Lockups/freezes on custom/campaign. But having run the file (64 bit vcredist_x64.exe ) 'Seems' to have halted /stopped any freezes so far played through campaign,,1x each side/few custom maps ,,just a couple momentary hiccups seen, hardly noticeable,,,,
