  1. http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zouaves Several units of Zouaves were formed on both sides, especially on the side of the Union during the Civil War. The Union Army fielded more than 70 volunteer units named Zouaves during the conflict; For their part, the Southerners organized more than 25 companies of Zouaves. At least early in the war, units of Zouaves held the role of light infantry, mobile infantry Light Infantry, deployed in loose order rather than close order to maneuver. They moved at the double, fired and reloaded their weapons preferably lying down or kneeling. Confederate units The Confederates create few units, primarily in Louisiana (Tigers Zouaves, Coppen's Zouaves battalion, Louisiana Zouaves). Their creation March 22, 1861 at Camp Walker, near New Orleans is due to four son of French baron Augustus Coppens, especially Georges de Coppens, lieutenant colonel killed in 1862 at the Battle of Antietam to the head of the 8th Florida Regiment. This one began with the 1st Battalion order Zouaves, with his brother Alfred lieutenant for majors Fulgence Bordenave, captain of French Zouaves who fought in Algeria and the Crimea, Weldemar Hyllested, Jean-Baptiste Souillard, former French engineer engineering and Paul-François de Gournay which publishes the Daily Picayune. The regiment was organized in Pensacola, Florida in 6 companies each bearing a letter from A to F, Company A became the first infantry battalion of Zouaves Coppens, companies B and C become the 7th Battalion of Louisiana, E Company became in 1862, the 1st Battalion Louisiana heavy Artillery (12th Battalion of the Confederate army). Their war hymn is "Rondeau des Zou Zou ." There is a monument in memory of the battalion Dupeire Louisiana Zouaves which included two companies (Dupeire's Louisiana Zouave battalion). Northerners units For its part, the North, the Union team many regiments of Zouaves, sometimes Zouaves in name only. Their creation is due to Colonel Elmer E. Ellsworth (en) who studied the Zouaves and was impressed by reports of their fighting. He was advised by Charles de Villers, a French military doctor who had served in the expedition to Algiers in 1830 and had adopted similar outfits. The most famous are the 5th regiment of volunteers from New York, dubbed the Zouaves Duryee or Red Devils1, the 11th regiment of volunteers from New York, dubbed the Zouaves of fire, the 9th New York (Hawkin's Zouaves), the 10th New York (National Zouaves), the 62nd New York (Anderson Zouaves), the 114th Pennsylvania (Collis Zouaves), the 165th New York, etc. The 11th was first commanded by Colonel Ellsworth (died 1861) and then harshly begun at the First Battle of Bull Run. The 5th was considered an elite unit of the Army of the Potomac, and incorporated in the division of Sykes. At the second battle of Bull Run, the 5th New York Regiment, accompanied by the 11th New York Regiment (National Zouaves), participated in the flank attack Longstreet's body for ten crucial minutes before being put out battle: 525 men, 120 were killed and 330 wounded during these ten minutes. From 1863 the Zouave uniform is given as a reward to deserving units of the Union Army and there will be more units of Zouaves at the end of the war than at the beginning. In the years 1870-1880 the Zouaves were gradually assimilated to regular units of the Army.
  2. from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zouave Zouaves of the American Civil War Numerous Zouave regiments were organized from soldiers of the United States of America who adopted the name and the North African–inspired uniforms during the American Civil War.[24] The Union army had more than 70 volunteer Zouave regiments throughout the conflict, while the Confederates fielded about 25 Zouave companies.[25] A feature of some American zouave units, at least in the opening stages of the American Civil War, was the light infantry tactics and drill they employed. Zouaves: "...utilised light infantry tactics that emphasised open-order formations, with several feet between soldiers, rather than the customary close order, with its characteristic 'touch of elbows'. They moved at double time, rather than marching at a stately cadence, and they lay on their backs to load their rifles rather than standing to do so. To fire they rolled prone and sometimes rose on one knee."[citation needed] Arguably the most famous Union Zouave regiments were from New York and Pennsylvania: the 5th New York Volunteer Infantry, "Duryee's Zouaves" (after its first colonel, Abram Duryee), the 114th Pennsylvania Infantry; "Collis's Zouaves" (after their colonel, Charles H. T. Collis); and the 11th New York Volunteer Infantry, the "Fire Zouaves". The 11th New York was initially led by Col. Elmer E. Ellsworth, until his death in 1861. The 11th New York was badly mauled during the First Battle of Bull Run in July 1861 as it acted as the rear guard for the retreating Army of the Potomac. The 5th New York was considered one of the elite units of the Army of the Potomac and was one of only two volunteer regiments brigaded with the regular division commanded byGeorge Sykes. At the Second Battle of Bull Run, the 5th New York, along with another Zouave regiment, the 10th New York "National Zouaves", held off the flanking attack of James Longstreet's Corps for ten crucial minutes before it was overrun. The 5th New York thus suffered the highest percentage of casualties in the shortest amount of time of any unit in the Civil War (of 525 men, approximately 120 were killed and 330 were wounded in less than 10 minutes).[citation needed] American Zouave ambulance crew demonstrating removal of wounded soldiers from the field, during the American Civil War. In 1863 and 1864, three Union regiments (146th New York, 140th New York, and 155th Pennsylvania) were issued with Zouave uniforms to reward their proficiency in drill and battlefield performance.[26] Difficulties in supply and replacement meant that Zouave and other exotic militia uniforms tended to be replaced by standard issue uniforms throughout the conflict. However, the tradition remained strong, and the last Union casualty of the fighting in Virginia was reported to be a Zouave of the 155th Pennsylvania, killed at Farmville, Virginia on the morning of April 9, 1865.[27] A number of Confederate Zouave units were also raised. In contrast to the many Federal units, most Confederate Zouaves were not full "regiments": many were companies within larger units. The cognomen "Louisiana Tiger" dates from the Mexican War, and refers to any Louisiana state trooper (and more recently, to the state's athletic teams[citation needed]). But none of the Mexican War Louisiana "Tigers" were Zouaves. The earliest, and most famous, Louisiana Zouave unit was White's Company B (the "Tiger Rifles") of Major Chatham Roberdeau Wheat's First Special Battalion, Louisiana Volunteers, aka "Louisiana Tigers".[citation needed] Another notable Zouave regiment on the Confederate side was "Coppens Zouaves", which were raised byGeorges Augustus Gaston De Coppens in 1861, and saw action in the Peninsula campaign and at the battle of Petersburg, all the while being constantly in need of supplies. They were disbanded in 1865.[28] Winters also notes that a group of itinerant actors who claimed to have served in European wars stimulated the Zouave craze. The actors attracted large crowds and inspired the formation of military companies. They visited several New Orleans companies and instructed the men in a new manual of arms. They toured the river towns and played to an overflow audience in Plaquemine. In Alexandria in Central Louisiana, the actors performed "a bloody drama of the Crimean War".[29] Among the Louisiana Zouaves were the "Louisiana Tigers" or "Coppen's Zouaves". These names have been confused with "Louisiana Tigers at Gettysburg". Coppen's Zouaves were at Gettysburg, but they were not then known as "Louisiana Tigers". Captain White's Company B, "Louisiana Tigers", of Major Wheats's First Special Battalion, were not at Gettysburg, having been disbanded after Wheat's death at Gaines Mill in 1862.[citation needed] Post Civil War[edit]Zouaves gradually vanished from the U.S. military in the 1870s and 1880s, as the militia system slowly transformed into theNational Guard. As an example, the Wisconsin militia still included one zouave unit in 1879, but the following year, in 1880, a standard Wisconsin Guard uniform was adopted, and the traditional distinctions of title and dress ceased.[30] After the Civil War, veteran groups sometimes dressed as zouaves during honor guard ceremonies such as funeral processions, since zouave dress was considered colorful and distinctive. Modern American Civil War reenactments often feature zouave units.[31] American Zouave uniforms[edit] The Brierwood Pipe, an 1864 oil painting by Winslow Homer of two 5th New York Zouaves The zouave uniform was sometimes quite elaborate, to the extent of being unwieldy. Some Zouave regiments wore a fez with a colored tassel (usually yellow, blue, green, or red) and turban, a tight fitting short jacket (some without buttons), a wide 10-foot-long (300 cm) sash, baggy pantaloons or "chasseur" trousers, white leggings, and a short leather cuff for the calf, called jambieres. The sash was especially difficult to put on, often requiring the help of another zouave. The zouave uniform was better suited for warm climates and rough terrain. The loose pantaloons allowed for greater freedom of movement than trousers, while the short jacket was much cooler than the long wool blouse worn by most armies of the time. One of the reasons for the smaller number of zouave units in the U.S. and Europe was the expense of the specialised uniform over that of mass-produced uniforms of a single color and cut.[citation needed]
  3. This is exactly the reason to my previous suggestion, if I understand correctly. It's a way to respond to the perception of the military crest and discovery, refining the circumstances of the positions, drawing markers on the ground, angle and distance. Otherwise it would serrated mapping more marked. Abandoning the current flare and smooth. This applies infantry as artillery.
  4. Often, i ve notice for all units, for angle range of fire, light more further; illuminate ennemies in red and shoot, than the black basic design wedges. It's happen in differents altitud's circumstances. The trick here, could be to adapt the distance fire wedge ground design, with the local position ? I know sometimes, the depth of the brigade overlaps in same time, differents variations of ground heights. But there's necessary a choice actually and anyway, i guess. Could be complicated with the refresh ... It's an idea.
  5. I guess the most of us have integrate the General Ultimate concept for cavalry. And its historical involvment in the gameplay. But the question will back each time for the most of new users. Preferences or not is another point. @ Personnal msg to Nick thomadis I suggest two things. Fist insist heavily about that aspect in marketing announces. Because when something is known, it is generally accepted. Or at least understood, and avoids desapointements Something like Less meat, more tactics ... ( Agitprop is the sinews of war ! ) In second, to highlight this aspect, and meets the approval of the public; characteristics of Cavalry scout may need to be expanded and looks like the concept for : vision officers radius like Sudden Strike. "I see, so I'll shoot." Rather, I allows units to long-distance shooting, identifying potential targets. This impacts the gameplay, and certainly more artillery.
  6. Hello Husserl, Multi multi ... multiplayer, i forgot to make a precision. Cap'tain Teuto on board sir !! 5 victories on 6 matchs ( all possibilities 2 maps, 2 factions for the most ) Yes yes yes !! Thanks, but i don't understand. "click on an empty map space" ... I m just talk about one group alone, only one, the first. I select some units. I create a groupe : ctrl + number I give a move order. So the goup is select. If i click in an empty space, it give a new move order on this point. The goup is not select. I click somewhere else. And i back on my group it's the same. I can't ungroup. You answer me before about that on single map. You recommand to make "Halt", before ungroup. And it's working. Thank you. But on multi, seems not. Anyway, "Halt" is an embarrassement protocol, it's a wedge about this occurence, and a coin for the idea's box. If you could think about, it could be nice. Generaly we like to correct a position or a move for one single unit in assemby move, and not necesseraly for all the rest of group ... which follow original transfer. To launch a bug report on multi, i must sacrify my partner, and there's no tchat box ( ? ) to advertize him. EDIT Ok it s concern only the first time for the first group After i create a second group, the problem desapear, for the second and for the first one. But at the entry of the Army approach Gettysburgh, its always the same problem, i can t ungroup. This time i launch a bug report.
  7. Hello friends, I m really sorry but i ve always a problem with ungroup. Even after selecting group, press halt then ungroup. I can't ungroup and it's become unplayable, as you could imagine.
  8. @ Lannes I personally am on the border of the two perspectives. I am interested passionately in history, but I see that as the American Civil War did not my favorite periods, I am less harsh on the details. And not being American, probably less suceptible or unwilling to alternative proposals that could serve playability. Also, a game should remain a game (I'm short) and not a museum guide. Nevertheless, this one had the singularity and the courage to break with the haunting codes games unimaginative copy from each other. It offers through its playability, the specifics that reflect the spirit of the doctrine of use of weapons of the period. I very humbly lay claim to this thing, as this game invited me somehow reading about its theme. It allowed me to realize the wisdom of its playability and understand and accept this case. Obviously, anything can be improved, but each suggestion must respect the spirit of the letter. And in both directions. The wargamers will be shoved in their habits. Specialized historians will feel betrayed by the travesty of detail. Historians are rightly demanding. For it, is the fabric that makes the beauty of the object. At the time, it is the responsiveness of its IA who so deep. Which must meet the same time, strategic protocols movement, as in tactics by adjusting settings of fire and damage, among others. To determine the relevance of these two fillings, which seem almost antithetical to the specialists of both genders, it is then necessary to adopt what I will call such as: third paradigm. The envelope is not only decorative, it is accompanied by a mechanism that attempts to transcribe the essence. If it does not fully satisfy one or the other, because proposes a compromise, his genius is based on a new alternative of looking at things. It must also be regarded as a limitation of scope, a bound format. The scale is predominant in this area. I notice on this forum regularly queries entirely legitimate and quality, that give depth to the conversation. But often forget yet another paradigm, which is the scale of representation. Without taking into account the overriding third paradigm and the size of the representation, it will necessarily misunderstandings, differences and inappropriateness queries.
  9. Vux.
  14. This is reflect the principle of avoidance of collateral damage. Solid long drag for long range answer to ballistic resolution, and passes over the heads. Not the other types of ammunition.
  15. Less than any other game, indeed. (Infantry scout & Arty destroy ) Looses for brigades are less important than moral. Moral provide from sides cover & flank, altitud, camouflage végétation, exhaustion, looses, wavering, général proximity ... This made artillery like a support, but not as décisiv unit. And it's its interesting occurence. Because more than details of smooth bore or not, it transcribed by the gameplay the "spirit" of this kind of war. Doesnt means some finest historical adjustement could be provide anymore. But at first, concept is relevant.
  17. yep; which scale map's use actually ? I guess it's become difficult to find some specifical sprites at this size. But may be there's some design solutions. To my opinion more urgent, is the mapping itself for positionning. And before differents guns, "distinguishable" altimetry is the trick. Another solution is to plug some forbidding icons on line of sight ... Ok ok ok don't hurt me to load, it's breaking the "beautiful flowers"
  18. Disagree. For a simple thing, it's a game, is not pageant guide touchscreen for the museum armies Gettysburgh REB Blunt forget something. I'm playing, I ll made the history. In other words, the story stops when I start playing. I move the guns like a general player not like a book. No confusion, i love history. And the game reflects "the spirit", the doctrine of employment of weapons, and reflects some scenography and chronological reconstruction of events. "at this size", means scale. it's enough and really good. But ... That the distinction is relevant, canons (To distinguish a rifled barrel with a smooth bore ) in the context of the gameplay should be the units are identified graphically, at least at the scale of a game like Sudden Strike. ( The futur of General ultimate ? ) I don't want an icone or a mini flag. However, to evoke a more generic way, we can not deny the problem of handling the artillery on the field. And use that must be done is tedious because of the ground. Mapping is very pretty and nice to have entered the name of the place instills identification of advantageous places. From this point of view is perfect. What makes by default against, and this is a big job to do in the future lies in the gradation of brightness constrate altitudes. The M key is a topographic really good idea, it should be retained, but it should be supported better graphically. It looks like a layer too is in a hurry. It is also through this that is résolve involvement sightlines poorly understood.
  19. in summary An angry man against economic imperialism and the mediocrity of the game market Which is a saving for the independent production. Sharing his passion and his love for UGG on observations that we all share. Too many circumlocutions and metaphors purely French, for Anglo Saxon readers appreciate any stylistic fervor.
  20. I ve never played to Sid meiers version, is it similar in anyway except the "title" ? edit, i find that :
  21. All is said. To his critics, I would say that the envelope of the game does not allow the slaughter, victory does not belong to the last man, the losses are anecdotal. I would say this: And it can not be compared to other wargames of this view. Moreover, because it is primarily a RTS and not a game turn. When I realized that this ground of discussion is pointless because everyone will have his subjective interpretation of what should be a wargames and what is the definition of an RTS. Fed his own exprériences, pleasures or disappointments. In this particular form, the objectives of victory points are welcome. They represent an attraction in which a strategy and organization of the movement base. Something unique, you can even be assigned to an intermediate defeat with minimal losses but pré guides the deployment of the following battles. To a certain extent the victory points are less positive or negative sanctions as instigators. Without the originality of this principle would be any game, just better than Total War. All tastes are in nature, and everyone is free to appreciate or not the concept. The question that then arises is : Do ou like this game in its original design and coherence of its overall logic ? If I refer to all of the great strategists of requests forum that suggest that the artillery should have an accuracy that even the best weapons XXI century do not have, a horse should look like a panzer column, and no strategic target (I'm exaggerating a little but that clear) ... At the end UGG would not be what it is, and without it he would not like me. Because it look like the worst in others, and that it has no interest. . This type of challenge is required on games soulless and empty concepts that have other reasons that compulsive spam or are guided by scripts. Here it is not the case. And both somehow it is also its limitation. Criticism, reflection is always positive, even that - it. But it must be calibrated on the content and the proposed offer, understanding that - it. This is the not improve distorting, by what there is restive. That said my humble point of view.
  22. Funny we lll fight for uncle sam is same melody like Whysky in jare
  23. Question : Is points victories change the number / size and speed of arrival of reinforcements ? ( same map or during the campaign )
