  1. Bungee I think what he is saying is that the ball boy does not wait until the rack is empty to go below for refills and would not be part of the actual gun crew but a supporting man that refills all the racks of all crews? I wonder if racks are something that can be added as an option you can configure your ship with?
  2. "they might be Slow and poor sailors but they have alot of cargo room wich might be needed for some large shipbuilding objects."
  3. "No levels or classes: You determine what you will become. Player will get naval ranks and court titles though that will determine his/her income, admiralty or national benefits. "
  4. Actually the original notes do specify that you can choose where you are born and what nation to play I just noticed.
  5. So the solution to allowing old redundant ships of the line to play with the peak of the sail age nelsonian warships is to have them haul cargo? The way WOT did it was not to allow level 20 players or tanks in matches with lvl 1 players. Of course this requires a massive community and splits all of your friends up.
  6. Double shot is recorded as one of the most time consuming shot to load and what a lot of crews yet to enter battle took the time to load for the first volley. Cannot remember the source but it would have been about the British navy during nelsons time. I don't really have much on other periods.
  7. Well if we are playing scenarios will we be taking our customised ships that fit the period or just any ship we like? I will have to look harder if it is being discussed elsewhere.
  8. Shore batteries used "hot shot" and some nations used fire ships. But I have never heard of catapults and explosive barrels being used? I think some ships used rockets and howitzers but they were to support landings. Ammunition types that are pretty standard are: * Double shot (two round shot loaded in the one barrel at once) * Round shot * chain shot or bar shot (for taking out sails) * Cannister or grape shot - for anti personel http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/ship/sail-ammo.htm

    Hi all

They were there. He must have edited them out. Maybe he will come back with a ship?
  10. Before I begin let me assure you that I do know that ships lasted a very long time. Some being in service for more than 100years. However some old ships did have timber that was weaker and more easily penetrated than newer ones. Larger ships generally had thicker sides as well from what I am lead to understand. Now with that out of the way. In game - scenarios or open warfare - will I be seeing 16th Century to the end of Napoleonic Wars all mixed together? For instance will I see Sir Francis Drake and those useless 16c canon go up against Nelson's HMS victory? The same as the richly decorated early 1700s ships would look a little silly vs Nelsons 3 deckers. Because this would look infernally silly?
  11. Perhaps I just got this from the battle of the nile where french crews were missing a fair compliment that was out foraging for food and water.
  12. If anyone has a better source especially one covering the entire period depicted in this game that would be great. http://www.larsonweb.com/Transfer/Miniatures/Sail/NAPSHIPS.htm Some Historical Paint Schemes Some examples of ships at The Battle of the Nile 1798 taken from a data sheet provided by Davco miniatures: British ships HMS Alexander: Plain yellow sides with a black stroke HMS Goliath: Yellow sides with a black stroke between upper and lower rows of gun ports HMS Culloden: Yellow sides with two narrow black strokes between upper and lower gun ports HMS Zealous: Red sides with a narrow yellow stripe HMS Minotaur: Red sides with a black stroke between upper and lower gun ports French ships Le Guerrier: Dark yellow sides L’ Aquilon: Red sides with a black stroke between the upper and lower gun ports Le Franklin: Medium yellow sides Le Heureux: Very dark yellow sides Le Timoleon: Very dark red sides Le Guillaume: Light yellow sides with black stroke between upper and lower decks Some examples of ships at The Battle of Trafalgar 1805 taken from a data sheet provided by GHQ and other sources: All of the British ships were painted in the "Nelson Checker" of alternating black and yellow stripes and black gun ports. To further distinguish the British ships from the French/Spanish ships, the British painted their masts yellow instead of having the normal varnished wood. Yards and mast tops were still black. There was no standard color scheme among the French and Spanish ships. The French ship Neptune for example had reddish-yellow stripes on a black hull while the Intrepide might have had bright red stripes Others had red or yellow stripes of various shades. Some Spanish ships such as the San Justo and Santa Anna were painted almost all black and the Spanish Santissima Trinidad, a four deck ship-of-the-line, had a deep red hull and a narrow band of white under each of the four rows of gun ports. Other sources suggest that the S. Trinidad was painted red with white stripes, and another description gives it red stripes edged white on black, and yet, one other reference suggests that the ship was actually white, with red stripes! Other Parts of the Ship While you are safe using natural wood colors when painting the rest of the ship (the deck being a very light color of wood or light tan/beige), the following information offers some alternatives. If you want to the actual source, this information comes from an article in the Jan. 1990 issue of Miniature Wargames magazine. BRITAIN OTHER NATIONS Inside Bulwarks red or ochre red, yellow, green, blue, black, or brown Gun Carriage red, yellow, wood ochre ditto, and green Outer Bulwarks dark blue, dark gray ditto, and red or brown FRANCE SPAIN Fighting Top Armings blue, red white-and-blue green and white BRITAIN FRANCE, USA Masts varnished, yellow varnished, white Masts Tops black black Mast Bands black black Yards black black
  13. I would like to see the battle of the nile. It had the French anchored with springs waiting for the English to attack. The english attacked in two lines and anchored hoping to float and pull up next to their target. This did not always happen and some ships cut their anchors to float away. The french ships had cables strung between their ships stern and bows. It is notable for the French Frigate that ignored the age old unwritten order that a frigate should not fire on a ship of the line. Needless to say the English ship of the line turned and let loose one broadside that was enough to disable and run the french frigate aground.
  14. Historically guns fired faster and a lot of crews did not carry enough crew to man both sides at once. So nominating a side to concentrate on would be good.
  15. Wondering whether we can replay the 1700s-1800s revolutionary and napoleonic wars by having our ships join a faction or having faction specific ships? This way I would have a sense of purpose instead of just being a gun for hire.
  16. i am a bit dissappointed that so many people seem focussed on the open world. This would seem to indicate that they just want to adventure with simplistic combat.
  17. Naval Warfare not Pirate Grinding I have not played these pirate games most speak fondly of and frankly am not here to chase pirates around the oceans unless the time can be made manageable in the context of my other real life commitments. This would involve me sending frigates out to trace the pirates general location, moving the fleet to that location and then once the frigates get word to me again sending the fleet in for the kill. For me this game is about the naval warfare aspect. I want to carry out naval operations against other navies and fight battles against other navies. I do not have thousands of hours to scour the seven seas or to sink into grinding for a nice cape for my captains outfit. I simply want a realistic war game. Something that has not really been done in any reasonable manner since ancient art of war at sea. Age of Sail http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Age_of_Sail_II However age of sail had no total war like campaign map to put all of this together. Total War had no realistic combat and certainly did not have us commanding from the deck like this game does. I want a naval war game that allows me to command a naval vessel (naval action) in the first person. I want mechwarrior online style combat with realistic combat and scenarios tied together by a campaign map. I want to be able to upgrade and customise my ship for different battle and fighting styles. As for pirates. They can control the backwaters and every now and then a national fleet will go in and clean them out just like happened in real life. I do not want to have to be a pirate to grind for gold. Instead my nation can pay me a wage to maintain my ship and deal with the dockyard quartermaster. What is the point of this post you say? To make the devs aware that I do not want an EVE style grind and do not have time to grind and play chicken with the many pirate captains that have 8hrs a day to wander around. I think there should be a purely naval campaign map with a no pirates option.... This campaign would be a war of supply and mane-over much like total war in real time zooming in for first person combat. This is the way ancient art of war at sea did it and it worked really well. Please do not make pirate grinding a pre-requisite for playing the fleet game. To me this will be boring and time consuming. Please do not let pirate development stop the combat from being realistic. I want to see proper fleets rather than hodge podge fleets. Perhaps I will be able to stick to pre-made scenarios? I am very afraid this game will try to be too many things to too many people. The last game I had this problem with was war of the roses... the game focussed heavily on realistic (as possible for its time) weapons and historical combat. It got dumbed down for the kiddies who did not comprehend how to beat plate armour and alienated both the action wargamers and the casual call of duty types. I spent a lot of time on it but perhaps would not have if I knew the armour system was going to be dumbed down. In this game ideally I would like it to teach me how to sail and captain a ship and teach me 18c naval combat. Complete with all the immersive adventure, story and action that can be thrown in from first person. Not as much interested in how to be or catch a pirate. That stuff was mostly small time, short lived and self destructive imho.

    Hi all

Nice renders (I am no expert though). I notice those are all cars. Do you like the age of sail?
  19. So essentially gusting and wind strength need to be in game to show the strength oi each vessel type. Combined with how heavy the seas are for given ship types. If we simply have the direction of the wind then ship speeds will all be the same. As for class restrictions. I still think the devs may find that people find a sweet spot and games simply become about one type of ship.
  20. If you go pirate with anything rated it would be highly recognisable as a particular nations vessel. You don't just steal the HMS Victory and then use it for piracy. If it is used for piracy then the nation will recognise your nation so you better be at war with it. Very expensive to run and a sole purpose of taking on enemy navies.
  21. i would hate to see this game turned into a simple pirate romp where single ships combat rather than being a game about naval fleet warfare. They have to get naval fleet warfare right before wasting effort on pirates as like i said the market is flooded with pirate games some of them very good.
  22. there have been so many games and movies about pirates.
  23. All I need to know really is if the sea has a real effect in battle on a ships speed due to sea movement direction. Be they tides, currents or otherwise.
  24. now they can finish the hornblower tv series with it
