And, of course, you can see the other books linked in the 'suggested' section at the bottom.

I've not managed to find a copy of the first one for myself, given its rarity, but I have spotted the other two in a library and they were quite informative.

The War of 1812 and the Rise of the U.S. Navy Hardcover

by Mark Collins Jenkins  (Author) , David Taylor (Author)

This book is amazing, it's big, heavy, printed on really thick paper and lots of pictures of things from the era.

  • 2 weeks later...

Also I found this text well written and interesting: http://www.cnrs-scrn.org/northern_mariner/vol13/tnm_13_4_29-39.pdf . The close hauled numbers confirm yours: 67.5° at best for square rigged ships. Also it's given 3° of leeway at best (up to 12° depending on the conditions). The best frigates could tack in their own lenght, and wear in four times'.

Very interesting read, it is only 11 pages long so there is no excuse for not reading it.

Update

I also found the other part of this article: http://cnrs-scrn.org/northern_mariner/vol14/tnm_14_3_57-68.pdf
