  1. I dunno... when I look at the one without an anchor in the O it makes me feel like something is missing... maybe because the top of the O is still decorated so I am sort of expecting there to be... more? Then again.. anchor-V and anchor-O both look great so I can't decide Need more (others) that throw in more suggestions too I would, except the creativity and painting skills I possess are limited to painting the exterior walls of a house
  2. Let me be the devils advocate here a bit. Why shouldn't we be allowed to name our ships whatever we want? Why should we have to select a name from a pre-populated list? I might want to name my ship the 'Egersund' in recognition of my home town, or something like 'Draugen', 'Æger', 'Skjold' or any other Norwegian name for the ships. Should I have to submit a request to have a ship name for every ship ever made or renamed in the game ? Are we going to bog down the developers, or their Customer Support team with all these requests? Furthermore, there is already a whole lot of awkward player names in the game and it is the PLAYER name and NOT the ship name that is visible (in current form anyhow). So if we follow the logic of how to name ships shouldn't there already be a request system for even making and getting your player name approved? Give us freedom to name our ships whatever we want, and IF someone for some reason make a name that is gravely offensive then handle that on a case-by-case basis by using the proper report tools (just as you would if it's an offensive player name).
  3. I really like the second one. One comment on this one though... could the "Naval Action" title be lowered a bit? The seaspray of the ship in the background is making the "Naval" part of it get a little hidden in the background 'noise' of the seaspray, especially in the thumbnail view. Lots of great art in this thread though I am just jumping on the latest one
  4. Well I feel more informed now and able to say things beyond "someone blew a hole in one of the triangle handkerchiefs" when my sails are getting ripped Thanks for the quick help! Next will figuring out what all those strings hanging from the sails are called
  5. Well, that was quickly answered by reading a couple of pages I'll repost the excerpt here as reference for anyone else who wonders. Keyword for my question was apparently 'staysail'
  6. I'm not a die hard naval enthusiast, but when it playing Naval Action I do like to use the proper terminology for the things happening in the game. For instance, it just sounds more right to say you lost your main mast, or that your mizzen mast was broken rather than "I lost the sail in the back" and "the middle pole just fell into the water". So I looked up some cross section images of sailships and found one that was really nice, however, it doesn't name all the sails... which made me curious... do they even have a name to designate them? Underneath you find the image that I googled, and I added red numbers and arrows to indicate the sails that seem to be 'unnamed'. Can you name those sails? 1 = ??? 2 = ??? 3 = ??? 4 = ??? 5 = ??? 6 = ??? 7 = ???
  7. Uh... how about we look at Naval Action, you know, the sailing part of it and first get functional; Damage Model 4.0 Open World Trading Ship building Factions Bounty hunting Piracy Party/Group features Guild/Clan features Naval Action isn't a 12 v 12 World of Tanks PvP arena game (even though a majority of mislead alpha testers seem to think so due to the Sea Trials). As much as steamships, WW1 and WW2 naval battles would be interesting they would also be arena-only stuff. How many ships in the merchant fleet post WW1 actually carried cannons? None. So you going to be sailing around in the Bismarck, trading spices from India to Europe? Really? The idea is great, the timing is beyond horrible. Naval Action isn't even a game yet. It's a testing room for ship combat, just like Star Citizen dogfighting module. Lets see a fully developed Naval Action before they waste effort on Naval Action, WW2 Edition.
  8. Why would you settle for only one ship? I want a flotilla ! As for ship names I will simply consult this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Royal_Norwegian_Navy_ships *edit* While reading up on the Norwegian ships I came across the "Najaden"... which was sunk by HMS "Dictator". Have to admit, HMS "Dictator" has a name that makes it sound like... yeah... not going to tango with that thing... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Dictator_(1783)
  9. I compiled the keybinds into a PDF so it can be printed for quick reference. Hope that helps some of you (sorry about the amateur style, but I was doing it during my lunch at work so it's a bit of a rushed thing) https://www.dropbox.com/s/nsnvyqsjfg83s5j/Delete%20Me.pdf?dl=0
  10. Coming in late here but just wanted to add some info. Watch one of Sidestrafes videos on youtube. His mast is shot off in a battle, so broken masts are definitely in. I've also seen listing from repeated doubleshots to the prow of ships. The 'fall' over on the side and stay low on that side afterwards. Most likely from holes and leaks being punched in from those double shots.
  11. Welcome to forum, and game! It sure looks amazing and the gameplay is fantastic even in early alpha! If you want to see a really awesome side of this game then try to find some videos with battles in bad weather with high waves. The way ship moves and rolls on waves is so beautiful
  12. True Henry, the spin is a crucial factor. Even pointed rounds would end up tumbling through air if no spin is introduced. However, round balls from smoothbore cannons had no spin whatsoever. At least no intended spin, nor enough to make much difference. So again, on topic, the ability to fire single ranging shots in the game is not really the issue. The fact that cannons are so accurate that once you got range from a single shot, every single shot from broadside will be dead on target even at extreme ranges. Introducing less accuracy on those long range broadsides would make ranging and extreme distance broadside sniping with long guns less desirable (and more realistic?)
  13. I know this is of minor importance, but I would love to see more camera angles for the ship to fully enjoy the impressive work and details put in. Views such as; Crows nest Wheel Inside gunports looking out Different views from weather deck, poop deck etc. 'Fly by' view of ship sailing past a fixed point (awesome for moments when streaming or making youtube videos) Broadside view showing side of ship from fixed view so you can see entire battery firing. Sure there are more ideas. More views would let us really enjoy the majestic look of the ships. With the somewhat limited views we have now I feel the beauty of the ships is a bit lost... *edit* I would also love being able to join battles as spectator only, even battles that are already ongoing, just to make videos or to observe how people play so I can learn tactics and gameplay.
  14. Inaccuracy from muskets (and smoothbore cannons) is the result of round balls having very poor ballistics. The drag from wind will cause the shot to pull towards a random direction rather than cutting through it like a pointed round fired from a rifled barrel does. The cleanliness of the barrel isn't the main cause of inaccuracy, though it can add to it.
  15. Range shot is nice for range estimation. I dont think range shots are the problem, but rather how accurate a broadside is at very long ranges. Using 6pd long barrels I can land the entire broadside accurately on target once I got the range. And getting range takes only 1-2 shots when you played awhile as you start to known the elevation required based on the distance to ship and ship size. What I think is needed is a wider 'cone of fire', that is more spread at long ranges. The cannons used were not rifled, but smoothbore, using round shots and fired through barrels that were not exactly a 'snug fit' but had quite a bit of free space around the cannonball. Those elements all contribute to inaccuracy, particularly at long ranges where wind direction, wind resistance and its effect on a round shape as well as the movement of the ship all come into play. Firing a roundball musket at long range is more of a game of chance than marksmanship. And smoothbore cannons is nothing more than oversized muskets. Just a thought.
  16. I find myself ignoring the wind 'compass' most of the time and just look at the direction of the flags and pennets flying from the top of the masts. That gives me a much quicker and 'hands on' feel for how the wind is affecting my ship and which way I need to go. Am I doing it wrong?
  17. They had downtime now for what... 6 hours? Was hoping to get to play today... seems that is not going to happen now.
  18. So that means keys are going to be sent out any minute now? I am refreshing my inbox !
  19. As per the title. Trying to plan my friday and would be awesome to know around what hour to expect the steamkeys. The preorder said they were sent in bulk each friday, but not at what hour Really LOVE all the videos of the game and I haven't seen a proper sailing game since Sid Meiers Pirates. I'm running in circles in anticipation to jump into a measly yatch and firing off them cannons!
