Obtaining Crafting Recipe's

Recommended Posts

After having read differing views on how crafting recipe's are obtained, I wanted to propose an idea that is a little different. I don't know about the feasibility of this for the developers, but here is my idea.

Specific "class rated" trader ships that carry ship recipe's for correlating classes of ships.

Example #1. You hail a ship and it responds with "5th Rate Trader Ship" then you know there is a recipe for one of the 5th rate in-game ships aboard the vessel. This trader ship will be a 5th rate ship matching the rating of the recipe it carries. The ship will be armed and will be accompanied by one small escort ship (say, no larger than a Cutter).

Example #2. You hail a ship and it responds with "3rd Rate Trade Ship", it will be a armed 3rd rate ship carrying an undisclosed 3rd rate crafting recipe. It too, will be accompanied by one small escort ship, and on and on for all other classes of ships.

The player would have to capture the trader ship to obtain the recipe. You won't know the type of ship recipe until you have made the capture, but you will know the class rating because of the class of Trader ship you attacked.

Further more, there would be no group battles allowed against these types of Trader ships. All battles against these ships would be single player against the npc's, making the obtainment of the recipe more challenging. And to make it even more of a challenge in obtaining the larger recipe's (from 3rd rate to 1st rate), maybe have the escort ship be something on the order of a Snow.

I disagree with this system more than the current system.

1. historically or realisticly it doesnt make much sense, how many ships carried recipe on board? or heck, how many carried blue prints? not too many, a very small amount in fact

2. what about people who don't do anything else but crafting? imagine they are level 40 but have say 0 exp in terms of battles... now they are fucked.

3. Certain areas will be shit out of luck as you dont see much activity there, like say the zoutman area(around the dutch capital) we have to sail to the bay of maricaibo, and then there arent that many AI fleets either, what do we have to do for the crafting recipes then? sail to something like plymouth and hope to get lucky or buy a recipe at extreamly high prices?

personally i think the current system is better, however as you break up a ship more often the chance of a crafting recipe increases(this does not happen when crafting ships).

I am not sure what you are talking about.

1 a crafter usually works in a port with many other men building ships he is a none combaton, he then builds ships for their navy. Supplies are usually brought to them or as in this game you have to sail for them and run the gauntlet of avoiding ships like yourself. This is interesting this is fun . Also you will find that we can battle as well

well, sure a crafter crafts ships, but he doesnt fight to get the recipe, also yes, supplies are brought to them, the crafters i know also get the supplies brought to them(or atleast further processed by someone else), and you didnt talk about point 3 at all, which for some regions is a major problem.

I can see this working, but it would have to be a rare spawn, like one out of one hundred AI trade ship spawns.  If it were to be a common spawn, I couldn't see the system working.

Example #1. You hail a ship and it responds with "3rd Rate Trader Ship" then you know there is a recipe for one of the 3rd rate in-game ships aboard the vessel. This trader ship will be a 3rd rate ship matching the rating of the recipe it carries. The ship will be armed and will be accompanied by one small escort ship (say, no larger than a Cutter).

Example #2. You hail a ship and it responds with "5th Rate Trade Ship", it will be a armed 5th rate ship carrying an undisclosed 5th rate crafting recipe. It too, will be accompanied by one small escort ship, and on and on for all other classes of ships.

An additional problem I see here is the escort is too small for the examples given.  Especially for Example #1.  I'd think a ship carrying a 3rd rate recipe would stand to receive a more serious escort than a small cutter...

Thanks, Hairy. Yes, I agree with you regarding escorts.  At the end of my post I mentioned that for ships rated 3rd to 1st, that a larger escort on the order of a Snow would make it more of a challenge.

still does not talk about the large issue regarding some regions getting barely any traffic, in the zoutman area there are barely enough ships to level, ships there arent seen that often and it is generally the area the dutch reside, now you are going to stop them from gaining crafting recipes?

An easier idea:  you can research blueprints (costing labor hours, money, real life time, etc, etc ) or blueprints are sold (very expensively) from the npc shop.

I think this is the best idea when it comes to recipes however I would make the blueprints you can research specific to your crafting level so then there are the normal ship's you can craft based on your crafting level and there are the blueprints that you need to research at a certain crafting level for a ship.

You all seem to have a handle on how to better obtain the recipe's. I was just trying to suggest an added method that would help alleviate the frustration of those who don't seem to have any luck in acquiring them. Maybe as Hairy Fishnuts suggested, having a rare spawn of this type of, "recipe bearing ship" (say, one out of one hundred) roaming all regions so that no one is left out of the opportunity of having an additional method of acquiring a recipe. Thanks!
