CowabungaKid
Hehe, I'd love to see the old Leopard in this game. No real-world knowledge of her whatsoever, but I remember her being the vessel Jack Aubrey hated the most in Patrick O'Brian's novels.
Mirones
actually its the new leopard that is based on the 74s hull lines and shape i sugested her long time ago and all plans are in the Plans and resources Thread.
russian
These plans are for the 50 gun 4th rate. One of the plates states that it is a 50 gun ship. And if you count the ports, you will see that there are not enough of them for a 3rd rate.
Mirones
the Leopard/portland/Ise class is a scaled down 74gun ship you just need to compare the leopard's lines to the Bellona or any other
russian
There you have me... as my knowledge on the subject is not as expansive. It does look a lot like a 3rd rate but did not 4th rates come around before 3rd rates became very popular? By the time of Napoleonic Wars, 4th rates were obsolete as SoL though still sailed into action, correct?
Mirones
yes as escort ship for merchants and flagship where large sols are not needed
russian
I think it would make for a good transition between 5th and 3rd rates as we only have a heavy frigate and a 74 at this time.
Mirones
most likely there will come some 4th rate in teh future the next thing that will come between the consti and bellona will be the 64 ingermanland
Captain_Chis
The constitution really could be classed as a 4th rate though could it not. Atleast the one in game.
russian
I have read before that it carried 50 guns though I do not remember the source so numbers wise yes. However, it was still a single deck warship.

Atleast the one in game. not really more super frigate or later 2nd/1st rank frigate it is kinda overlaping with the 4th rate SoL
Captain_Chis
not really more super frigate or later 2nd/1st rank frigate it is kinda overlaping with the 4th rate SoL Whats the different between a super frigate and a 4th rate sol? To me the constitution is just a 4th rate with big sails.
russian
Whats the different between a super frigate and a 4th rate sol? To me the constitution is just a 4th rate with big sails. If you look at a picture of any 4th rate, there are 2 dedicated gun decks. Frigates have 1 dedicated gun deck. Although there is a 2nd row of guns, those are on the weather deck. Alex Connor
Whats the different between a super frigate and a 4th rate sol? To me the constitution is just a 4th rate with big sails. What russian said, and also Constitution is bigger than a 4th rate, she is as long as a 3rd rate. 4th rates like Leopard are the same length as a frigate like Trincomalee. OTMatt
I noticed this ship has a crew complement of 350 and a broadside weight of 396 which is considerably more firepower than both the Trincomalee and Essex. The armor is probably something decent too being that it is essentially a compact SOL. It would be nice if us captains can get access to this ship so we can feel useful to our factions. Right now its not preferable if anyone under a constitution joins a port battle but maybe this ship could give us some more options during desperation situations.
