  1. Sooo... buff battle sails so everyone always uses them? Isn't that... literally not doing anything but making every fight way slower?
  2. Now this I like. Not a fan of the idea of NPC's hightailing it after my ass wherever I go, but the above sounds fantastic.
  3. Oops you're absolutely right, the ranks are just different on this faction. I am indeed at the master and commander equivalent! That solves that problem, and it makes sense the rewards aren't given twice
  4. Hey folks, So I just re-rolled to the Pirate faction; seemed the interesting choice. Wasn't too keen on the European factions and American wasn't sitting well either. I was surprised to see the tutorial didn't reset; are the rewards once per copy of the game? Kind of bummed I didn't know that prior to deleting my British character if that's the case. It's a hell of a grind to Master and Commander.
  5. I can't imagine this would be in place for more than a few days. If clans are going bankrupt in that time period, shame on them for not being liquid enough. Plus, dare I say it, alpha is alpha.
  6. I can say with certainty that I'm not going French, Dutch, or any other faction where half the players are across the Atlantic and/or barely understandable. There's gotta be at least one US west coast timezone group of players on the American, British or Pirate faction...? EDIT: I should probably explain that I have an extremely difficult time understanding accents over teamspeak. No ill-will towards my European comrades.
  7. I can see the benefits of a smaller map, but I think they're outweighed by the benefits of the current one.
  8. Plus the best thing right now about friendly fire is that when a noob friendly gets in your way you can tell them "too bad, I'm shooting through your ass" and they make a sound similar to this poor bastard:
  9. PUBG is a 20-minute repeatable free-for-all scenario with no significant persistent factors. Naval Action battles are often for persistent territory and persistent loot, using ships, weapons and modules painstakingly crafted, after travelling to said location for a long time in a team-and-faction-based persistent world. It's also an entirely different type of playerbase. I'd agree that it's a silly argument in PUBG. It's not a silly argument here. I don't think FF should be removed but I 100% agree exploits surrounding it should be addressed.
  10. 1) It's not in line with the overall feel of the combat. 2) It provides no punishment for the idiot that got in the way. 3) It removes a level of tactical awareness from a populous battlefield. 4) It removes the harder mental edge in battle. Makes it feel more arcade-y. This is the best naval battle simulator we have in this time period. There's plenty of ways we can adjust mechanics surrounding friendly fire to prevent it from being abused. Don't remove friendly fire itself.
  11. I'd have to agree that mirror damage in any scenario is usually a questionable mechanic, especially since in my experience the person getting FF'd is generally the person that made the mistake in the first place by being out of position or cutting across a line of fire. And the FF is almost always purposeful or due to mistaken identity; as it's been said there is rarely a situation where a friendly gets in the way faster than the attacker can react.
  12. Denying kills isn't a "positive function." It's a toxic display of poor sportsmanship. Friendly fire isn't supposed to have a positive benefit. It's supposed to add a layer of difficulty, force tactical thoughtfulness and add a sharp edge to the learning curve.
  13. ...Are we talking about PvP or friendly fire? As far as I'm concerned those are two separate subjects. If you're stuck on the whole "let's sink each other to grief the enemy" thing, the ultra-simple solution is to do what most other games do: friendly fire doesn't count towards scoring. If the enemy gets ONE shot on the target and the rest of the damage is friendly, that kill goes to the enemy with the one shot.
  14. Oh goodness, I of all people have a laundry list of things I think need to be adjusted, improved, removed, etc. I also just flat-out don't like the dev team (sorry devs, I'm sure you're nice in person). Nowhere on that veritable tome of issues and complaints I have is friendly fire listed as a reason players left. And if your complaint is that friendly captains sink each other to prevent the enemy from scoring, that's a very minor mechanical fix that has nothing to do with removing friendly fire.
  15. I can guarantee that the harsher and grittier the killing in this game is, the better it will do on the market. Nobody wants a Carebears with Cannons simulator. From a fun perspective, from a mechanics perspective and from a sales perspective, friendly fire is a necessity.
  16. Ignoring the fact that you'll definitely lose, I've not been given the impression that this is a democracy.
  17. This isn't Fortnite, I'm not sure how many preteens are glued to the screen watching wood float at 10 knots
  18. I'm a little confused at people digging in against paid cosmetics. It's not exactly a programming-intensive endeavor, and I'd rather not pay a monthly subscription.
  19. I guarantee you, the people still playing are stone-cold serious enough about it that they will definitely buy flags. And if that's what it takes to fund more gameplay mechanics, so be it. Personally I'd buy a fun flag. Couldn't care less about nations but I'll drop five bucks on a Steven Universe or Pickle Rick flag or some shit. In a heartbeat.
  20. 1) Friendly fire is good. 2) If someone in your fleet is constantly hello kittying up in this regard, don't bring them again. 3) The tribunal needs to go if this game is ever going to be successful. Attacking friendlies should not be something the admins have to personally enforce; that's unrealistic long-term. 4) As far as I'm concerned, once you're in a battle instance all is fair. If a friend turns on you, tough shit. Make better friends.
  21. Given what I've seen of the devs so far I'd be entirely unsurprised if in a year they simply pull the plug and vanish. Assuming they don't do that, one would have to imagine they'd take a page from literally every other modern successful service-based game and implement regular paid DLC, from flags to paint to sails, extra crew visuals, crew voicepacks, etc. I'm not a fan of actual better SHIPS for pay, but if that's what it takes to keep the servers up, so be it. EDIT: A good example I could see the game taking from is Warframe. Warframe is unapologetically pay-to-win, but it's done in such an elegant and streamlined way it really works well.
  22. At this point I'm mainly just curious how far they can get it prior to release. Assuming it releases. I'm playing other Early Access games that have been in limbo for 5-6 years.
  23. Sounds like Britain or Pirates! I couldn't stomach France. I suffered through 2 years of French in school before I finally switched to a more palatable language.
  24. I noticed the US coastline was all sorts of discombobulated.
