  1. Probably i am going a bit hard , but about ship organization and crew management i am very well informed as that is my profession for the past 20 years and easily can say that ship organization didn't changed much in the past 2000 years (funny but its true on basic ground ) , yes the ration are divided by the quartermaster , but there is something that remain again from the ancient persian and greek time - the captain need to be sure what were is going ( i presume you understand why ) everything need to pass trough the eyes and the hands of the captain ( in our modern times there is daily , weekly and monthly information notes needed to be signed by the captain to be sure that he read them and know what is going on - even the menu for the cook , similar forms was used by the navy and the merchant ships at XVIII and XIX centuries ) , when you backer ask - were are the money for the 6 month voyage you need to show him how is spent . There is so many things are missed and give completely wrong picture , but on ship no matter what you can not have debates other way everything become ( how to express my self better ) disarray . I take that you have idea how much hard work is need to be done only to keep the sails in acceptable condition and that is not the hardest work on sail ship . The people has the very bad habit to leave their work unfinished and here is come - why you need to copy the structure of organization which is totally based on autocracy? Once again i apologies if i am a bit sharp , but i don't have huge love toward piracy when some of your friends and colleagues passed true the hell to be held as hostages from pirates in the pass few years and I consider myself lucky to not been in their place in that moment .
  2. Once again you trying to bring water from far too many wells - as you pointed by yourself on the ship only law is the captain order - there isn't any democracy in a system were one person taking all the decision - especially on ship for the course , daily rations , the work or the sailors behavior on board - on shore -> who cares .So there is no democracy (once more ) , but if you try to mix same cases for not so voluntary recruitment in some states at that time that is completely different . Please explain me where you see "democratic voting" for what course the ship will take , how much rum will be given daily , who will clean the deck ? No sorry your dream is coming only from the movies and the novels or misinterpretation different quotes without the whole text . Exactly to the point !!! The only case were you can debate the piracy is not anarchy is for the Algerian pirates , but its still debatable , from what i read trough the years there is so many myths and cloudy explanation about their way of life nothing is certain , but when comes for the ship rules they follow the same system like all others sailors . P.S. Drake i am not using different size for the text to make my point stronger that is small glitch when you alt+tab between different programs and going back to the browser i am using , but you needed to note that differences in the size is 2pts and you can not change to 16 in the forum - 14 -18 , if someone wants to make a point will not use 2 points difference .
  3. I think you understand what you posted above is opposite to argumentation you made until that last post . What you posted above are rules solely created by captain and they need to be obeyed , there is nothing anyone to agree with them - obey or you will be punished . There isn't any democracy but just the opposite .
  4. The rule was in force in the moment you step on board to the moment you step away , no battle or we happily sailing under the stars - " No Question" to the orders " if you make exception only in certain situation it become debatable and there is one unspoken rule - "do no let the sailors to have time to debate or you will have mutiny on board" and that happened not ones or twice - modern academies has hours in psychology and the age of sails they didn't has it , it was passed experience from the captain to the junior officers and that was a big problem - not one or two captains become tyrants , so my point is that no matter navy , merchant or pirate ship when you step on board you become under full authority of the captain - if you don't obey you will be punished - no exceptions !!!!
  5. There is reason for that ! - When the difference between life and death is manner of seconds - there is no place for debates , the captain has the responsibility for the lives of all people on board and even one person come to harm , that reflects in the career of the captain (went over board in that moment) , so from the time ancient greeks the captain has absolute power to take decisions , the sailors must obey and they can bring any issue to the authorities after the voyage is over .
  6. Probably Padua/Kruzenshtern , i saw her few year ago and i remember that i didn't manage to pull my eyes off from her for a quite a time , sadly i didn't have opportunity to go on her take pictures and close look , we was about sail off when they arrived .
  7. Nice - the flying "P" are so beautiful . Anyone to know how many windjammers still exist ? I know for Peking was at South Street and Padua(Kruzenshtern) at Kaliningrad .
  8. The Naval Captains also receive similar share of the prise they captured . The differences are that the naval captain also receive his monthly/year payment as government employ , but the privater is self employ on government contract, he is responsible for the payment of his crew in similar way as the government to the navy sailors , its not different then if you own company you don't expect the government to send you a check and you need to pay to your employees- right !!!!
  9. That is the reason the privaters to disappear from the modern times , these actions are very close to piracy and very dangerous - many privaters didn't even understand when they crossed the border , they was put on trial and even then they didn't understand it . To understand me - in most of the cases the letter of marque specifically note that not the ship under enemy flag must be hunted but ships owned or under contract to companies of the enemy states ( if my memory still serve me well such case was with William Kidd - he was put on charges for seizing a ship owned by East India Company flying under French colors ) .
  10. Again you misinterpreted it , the privaters are very restricted from the law and their orders in the letter of marque - they don't receive direct profit from the cargo and the ship - they receive percentage from the later sale of the cargo and the ship (if the ship is sold ) - the percentage is again on record in the letter of marque. The privater acts more like warship on assignment for blockade and interrupting enemy trade routes , that was necessary for reducing the number of war ship put for that task and move them to more important tasks. In modern days the privaters are forbidden by any law - the reason for that is that no civilian vessel can carry weapons - far too many privaters in the history made that step down - were by mistake , were intentionally - the risk is to high .
  11. The definition of piracy according the law : 1.Any illegal acts of violence or detention, or any act of depredation, committed for private ends by the crew or the passengers of a private ship . Action on the high seas, against another ship , or against persons or property on board such ship .Action against a ship , persons or property in a place outside the jurisdiction of any State. The law continue i will not write all of it here , if someone wants it can be found on many sites , its never changed much for 200 years , there is small adjustments like adding aircrafts in the list , but the base of the international law remain the same . On other hand the privaters are contractors - they are bound to the international law , they can stop and check the ship registration documents , their contracts and If they are registered , owned or under contract with enemy state they can seize control the ship and escort it the closest friendly port where the cargo will be sold (on some cases even the ship ) and they will receive percentage of the cargo value and ship (if the ship is sold too ). The crew of the sized ship must not be harmed if they don't resist at the verification of their documents and cargo . P.S. Please excuse my bad english . P.S.S. The Piracy is something that the sailors don't take so lightly (if you are not a sailor you probably can not understand it , but the sailors are society were you consider anyone with your profession as a brother no matter of his nationality and harming your brothers for personal avail is not accepted very well ) . The ages didn't changed the way of thinking of the sailors even a bit about that subject .
  12. Russian -> Pavel Nakhimov , Grigory Spiridov and Fyodor Ushakov , Russian part of the community probably can add more , but i can say that these left trail in the russian navy at that time period.
  13. No i don't think because you are french , but because Sane , Chapman , Slade left pretty deep trail .
  14. Listen - the stability of the ships are very tin ice , at the sail ships is even more then a problem , every single shift(up or down , right or left , fore or aft , add or remove ) of the cargo create problems , adding sails its changing the stability of the ship in negative direction you move your metacentric height upward that create decreasing stability , you remove your ballast to create more cargo space-> again you rise your GM again , lowering your GM in your pointed cases is adding guns at lower decks , but that create other problems , is the deck is capable to hold weight of these guns - basically these are half decks not full decks and don't have the same endurance of the pressure as the full deck you need to limit the weight of the cargo on these decks and once again the GM going down and create over stability -> again bad for the ship , these modification that you read are made on docks for privaters by ship builders . I presume you have no idea how many ships are lost because the bad stability . P.S. You can trust me about the ship stability - that is my profession.
  15. Just saw the development plans for winter-spring 2015 and my votes lost its reason i am changing it to Christian VII that is the only gap that remained .
  16. No matter how romantic looks the piracy on the TV and the Books - the democracy was never part of the sailors life - modern time or age of sails time - RamJB missed one small point - > the captain was chosen by the crew , but that choice is already decided as at most of the cases that person supplied the ship and gather the people forming the crew .How much successful was the pirates and how much they looted is once again a debatable - there was more over reaction to what actually happens and loses was over inflated to bring the attention of the government (also don't forget that was the period where the insurance company started to become more popular ) . Yes there was few successful pirates like Henry Morgan - but they was very rare cases , most of them danced on the rope even before they managed to takeover a ship. P.S. Like RamJB said prepare to be hunted from every single faction in the game ! P.S.S. About the ships -> they was small standard vessels - captured or rented , very rare persons like Surcouf ordered a ship to be build or modified for them , but once again that is very costly enterprise .
  17. I really want to see merchant ships in the game , but at that point its too early without mechanic to change the cargo on board to be tested , so i voted for Wasa - that ship will close the gap between Constitution and Bellona , if i has a 2nd choice i would pick Rattlesnake were is the second gap , but choosing another frigate between Surprise , Trincomalee and Constitution is pointless at that point in my opinion.
  18. I think its a bit more complex then lateen or square rig - everything depends of the region . Lateen has advantage when you are put in situation where you don't have much room to maneuver with rapid changes of the wind , on other hand the square sail is better when you have long route with constant wind. The simple way to understand me , ask yourself - why lateen rig was popular in the mediterranean zone ? P.S. And don't make mistake full-rigged ships are not square-rigged ones only !!!!
  19. Its a bit out of the topic , but if you wish to read something about Russian Naval Battles i can suggest to read about the battle of Cape Kaliakra 1791. Its part from the Russo - Turkish War of 1787-1792 .
