If you're looking for something not quite as long and profound, something a little easier then 1500 pages of The Army of the Potomac, then I like With Lee in Virginia and Rifles for Watie for really light civil-war-era reading.

Raising Cane's. It's the best chicken. The best restaurant. Period. I'm not sure how spread out they are, but around here, it's basically heaven on earth. -
So, I was wondering... What's next?

Ultimate General Civil War: The Early Years! But really, it would be kind of fun as a prequel. -

I know, right? I'm about to move to Texas just because of the fast food -

And instead we're talking about restaurants throughout America, and the quality of A&W root beer. Average conversation on UG:CW forums -
Infantry. Infantry, infantry, and more infantry. Occasionally, if I'm feeling reckless, I might even throw in a few brigades of infantry. But seriously, I always have divisions of 5 infantry brigades and 1 artillary brigade. I never even mess around with cavalry or skirmishes. Maybe it's a terrible idea, but it's served me well up through Antietam on my first legendary CSA campaign.

I'm CSA to the bone, but I like A&W... I don't think I can ever eat there again without feeling really traitorous now... -
Darn straight. Yeah, this game is simply the most fantastic game I've ever played. Period. At this point, even if development stopped tomorrow, I'd still have gotten twice or thrice my money's worth. And if they want to take their time to really put quality into their work, I certainly won't complain.

Corps Commander-led charges
Albert Sidney Johnston replied to Albert Sidney Johnston's topic in General Discussions
Are those in a van down by the river too? But seriously, I whole-heatedly agree. JEB Stuart, Johnston... So many good generals died before their time in The South. If they had stayed alive, perhaps the war itself would have gone differently. But Shiloh itself would have defenitely turned out differently if Johnston had survived. Beauregard was a decent commander, but certainly no replacement for the great military genius of Johnston. -
Hey! So I was reading about the Battle of Shiloh, and one of my personal favorite generals (go figure), Albert Sidney Johnston. So the Union forces were defending this peach orchard, and attack after attack by the Confederate forces was repulsed. Until, that is, General Albert Sidney Johnston personally rallied his troops, and led them into battle. Following his lead, the soldiers charged into the peach orchard and managed to force back the Yankees. Unfortunately, Johnston was wounded while he led the charge and died. So, I was thinking it could be an interesting feature if mid-battle you could temporarily attach your corps commander to a unit, to "lead them". The unit would get amazing buffs, especially with moral, allowing them to spearhead charges and stuff. But you would also run the risk of your Corps Commander dying. His death would demoralize your army, causing corps-wide debuffs of all kinds. Whadya think? Would it be a cool feature?

Tips for dealing with enemy skirmishers?
Albert Sidney Johnston replied to Bobby Fiasco's topic in General Discussions
I'm in the same boat. Trying to win Shiloh as the CSA, I always got bogged down by skirmishers on the way to Shiloh Meetinghouse. Eventually I adopted the tactic of trying to herd them all together and leaving a single infantry unit to pin them down. I'm very interested to see how other people handle pesky skirmishers.- 8 replies

Ultimate General vs. Total War

I'm afraid not, but I'm just so surprised everyone else owns a copy of Gettysburg! I friggin' love that game! The only problem was conning someone into actually playing it with me... -

Albert Sidney Johnston replied to Albert Sidney Johnston's topic in General Discussions
Perhaps I'm crazy, but I think a War of 1812 or Revolutionary War campaign would be fantastic! I mean, the mechanics could practically remain the same, and the same kind of linear campaign system would work. Leading George Washington, or Charles Cornwallis as they fight across America... It could be pretty awesome. -
I'm sorry if I missed an obvious blog post or discussion, I'm a little new here. I was just wondering if anybody knows what will happen to the Ultimate General franchise after Civil War development is complete. Will they work on more Civil War-related projects? Branch out into other wars?(A Revelutionary War or Nepoleonic game with these mechanics would be pretty sweet). Or was this just a one-and-done deal, the developers never to release anything again? Because at this point, I would buy pretty much any further game that this franchise develops, regardless of the price.

Wanted: Quality Civil War Quotes
Albert Sidney Johnston replied to Andre Bolkonsky's topic in General Discussions
Welp, I have two new favorite quotes -
Yeah, 1st Manassas is always a bloodbath, especially at the last stage. Holding your troops in protected forests and cornfields while slaughtering brigade after brigade of Union soldiers trying to cross the water. "This isn't war, it's a rampage!"

Wanted: Quality Civil War Quotes
Albert Sidney Johnston replied to Andre Bolkonsky's topic in General Discussions
"All the men and officers, so far as I was able to observe, acted with the most desperate coolness and gallantry. Not one showed any disposition, notwithstanding their terrible loss, to fall back or flinch from the enemy" -a colonel of the 14th Georgia describing Hood's Texas Brigade. My favorite quote about my favorite brigade -

Whoa, really?? Do you know what mods he made?? 'Cause if it's half as awesome as this game, I'll install 'em in a second! -
After playing this UG:CW for the past few weeks, I ran across a copy of Rome II: Total War in my steam library. Deciding to take a brief break from the bloodiest war in American history, I decided to run through a campaign or two on my favorite Total War games. I can't. I just can't go back after tasting the glory that is UG:CW. After all my flanking maneuvers, ambushes, and grand strategy, Total War titles just seem so... shallow. Like playing Clash of Clans instead of World of Warcraft. I feel like I'm just blindly flinging troops into battle instead UG:CW's carefully calculated charges and withdraws. So, is anyone else having similar experiences? Which do you prefer, your favorite Total War title, or UG:CW?

Yeah! Gettysburg is definitely my favorite, so I've played through it a good dozen times. I only play through the historical battles I find particularly interesting. Shiloh, Gettysburg, and Antietam being the main three. I still haven't managed to win Antietam the CSA, but I've gotten so close on multiple occasions. One time I was a mere minute or two away from victory when a final Union charge pushed me away from Dunker church. It'd be so cool if there were special achievements for winning historical battles on BG mode.
