New Player Missions

Recommended Posts

Since new players need to do pve to rank up and learn for pvp anyways ( without rookie region that allows them to pvp other new players ) , why not allow them to join missions directly in port for the first 3-4 ranks to save them from sealclubbing? Having to sail to your missions over and over while getting ganked / hello kittyed over by some sealclubbers every once in a while surely doesnt make the game very appealing to new players anyways? Sailing time and sealclubbing seem to be a common complaint, so why not give newcomers a easier start so they don't uninstall right away?

IMO its a bad idea. You know, the learning curve. I think it's better for a new bro to die in a cuter or snow and give him a chance to figure out how to avoid such a situation. Than keep them under the safe shade and after force to sail a much more expensive ship without any idea how to survive at OS.

Missions:

  1. Idle Cutter
  2. Cannon-less Cutter
  3. Low rate shooting Cutter
  4. Normal Cutter
  5. etc.

Make sure folks can repeat such training exercises and provide a very little reward.

I think this is the way to go, give some basic training missions to let people get used to ship handling and aiming while slowly increasing difficulty before throwing them out in the open world.

I dont think you should be able to get to rank 3 or 4 with it, because that will leave them unprepared for the realities in open world. You can give them a choice in OW to remain in a safe area for a few ranks but provide more encouragement to explore outside the safe area.

Not sure if serious or trolling. A "new bro" will die plenty even after he was able to level up the first ranks without getting sealclubbed. Are you afraid of them actually being able to fight back when they have the rank to crew a surprise? Bashing newbs in basic cutters will only make them quit - and rightfully so.... who would enjoy playing a grind fest with canerfags sealclubbing newcomers as cherry on top of it? No wonder the game is basically dead...

A lobby type practice room limited to one fore-aft rigged ship (cutter or privateer) and one square rigged ship (snow or brig).

A new player can team up/duel with a veteran who will teach him/her basic sailing/maneuvers, gunnery, basic use of HUD (ammo types, repairs, prepare for boarding...etc) in a fore/aft rigged ship. Once basic skills are acquired, move to a square rigged ship to learn manual sailing and more gunnery/boarding and whatnot.

In the practice room, the players are provided with some repair kits/rum, guns so the veteran can teach them how to choose/mount the appropriate ones. The practice room may look like a limited UI, so the veteran can walk the new player through arming/equipping a ship, then join a battle instance and learn more stuff. Some kind of hands on learning experience.

No XP/Gold/Mark rewards in the practice room, or course.
