StuffinBeard aka Otto_Zilvervloot... a name I picked for some realism once OW hits. I'm not Dutch but my wife is part Dainish so I was thinking about joining a nation it that area just to be different then the typical English/French/Spanish. Not that anything is wrong with those choices...

  1. Well that was pretty cool! I think Ill have to come here to get my SC news and videos... I hate their site atm Edit: Well after going and checking out the site again (its been months) It is a lot better now. I could actually find info and it didn't seem hidden under some hype machine. Still have to wait and see how well all this money gets spent and if it is actually going to be fun or is it just going to be another EVE. I hope they move the genre forward and not wallow in the past.
  2. I think that everyone likes things in a different place it would be nice to be able to move them eventually. I always move my UI around to where I feel it is best used for me.. Jmo
  3. I can understand this point. If you find yourself constantly starting in a cutter but prefer to play in a Surprise it would only be a matter of time before you get frustrated and move on.
  4. As admin pointed out they may come back to it. I too would love to see it happen but if we have bare ships I'll live As far as it not effecting gameplay I'm not sure that's right. Yes it's only visual but a crew is just as important as the sails or the gun models. Without them it might not feel right. The game looks great as is and I think can only go up from here... Obviously these small little details may need to be addressed at a later date. The open world gameplay and mixing fleet actions and other things will be the heart of the game. If it's not done right we won't play it no matter how cool the crew looks. This is what forums are for thought right? People with ideas of how they think this game could be better! I'm just so glad the devs have let us in on the process...our feedback can steer this game into something we all can love. ( I know kinda mushy there!)
  5. I could see a number of rolled up maps that you might have to thumb through to find the right area you are in. This makes checking the map a little more work and not something someone will be tabbing back and forth to. Check the map... head back to deck... check your surroundings and head off toward where you think you need too. You know the nearest town so you grab the map associated with that town and you have a map of the areas around there you have been to or what ever a purchased map has revealed. Maybe in you journal you have what towns = what maps so a quick reference check and you can pull out the map. Very true. Maybe the maps could show some finer details like currents or small towns or things that you have marked on the map as poi... I find the captains quarters a neat way to add some avatar feeling without really having an avatar. (not sure if avatars were ever a thought for the game...I assumed not) Even If you were pinned to a spot and could access areas with a simple mouse click... like the journal or the map table. I don't feel the need to walk around in a cabin atm. Have the map only be accessible from the cabin so if your on deck you don't have that map. this would still allow for " getting lost" I suppose it might be an issue with ships without cabin space..didn't think about that yet.. Anyway just food for thought
  6. I Like the "fleet escort" idea. Of course all of this is guesswork on my part. Take with a grain of salt. If you really like playing the PVP battles you can get into a que that allows you do do other things in the open world until called upon. Sounds much better than sitting at a lobby screen twiddling your thumbs. Even if your just out practicing tacking your at least doing something. If you are doing something that you don't want to break away from you can decline the call. As far as having an escort (I hope NPC merchants can hire escorts as well) It can give you a way to mix people who want to play military and those who want to be traders. I can see a merchant ship gets attacked and then some players get pulled in to protect him. He can sail around the escort trying to not get in the way or get sank while they do their jobs. In the end either he gets protected or he doesn't but his chances without an escort were very low to begin. (balancing needed for protectors vs attackers) With NPC escorting NPC this could set up some treasure fleets or just have more arena style for those in a que. The more people signed up in a que to play maybe the more NPCs with escorts are spawned so there is always something going on. The only issue I would see is that arena "fleet escort" players would have much more naval action (<---see how i did that? ) going on that they might progress faster than someone just trading or playing open world. So the balance between playing fleet escort and regular open world needs to be thought of. Do the fleet players have alternate ships to sail during these actions and then go back to their open world ships after? This way you progress in your military role separate from your open world? Makes it seem like your playing 2 different characters ( which i like that idea) at once but on your off duty time in the military your not swabbing the deck or shining the bell! If you like PVP then your military character progresses and your in that sol that you want to play with and your open world guy is toodleing around in a brig. If your not into the PVP fleet battle thing but mess with it a bit your military guy has a lesser roll maybe in a cutter and your open world guy is running the best merchant ship of the era. Sounds like a win win to me. Not forcing either play on anyone but also allowing the two to mesh. Now come the thought of how to transition to the arena from open world without too much immersion breaking. Osseon had a great idea if you ask me! 7. I have always liked a transparent chat window that darkens as things pop up or you hover over. I feel like it draws my attention when it needs to and disappears when I don't need it. Nice work.
  8. http://forum.game-labs.net/index.php?/topic/2595-open-world-request-a-clue-please/page-7#entry88121 I think this applies here. He is talking about disconnected people not about kicking players but I thought it fit.
  9. would be neat to see a few guys holding on to debris . pull your ship over and have them climb up on to yours. Then back into the fray! Who could resist a sailor in need!?
  10. I suddenly had issues with Quoting others in post and copy/pasting anything into a post. I moved to Chrome web browser and it all works. I think its a Internet Explorer issue. Thats my guess
  11. Where are you headed? What is the heading to such a place? 32 degrees thata way -----> I'm not against hardcore sailing I kind of welcome it. I just kind of doubt sailors went anywhere without some kind of map or journal other than across the bay. Even today they use GPS but that's kind of cheating haha! again for gameplay reasons we will have to wait to see where they want to go with it. 8)
  12. Or do you realize you lost and its time to run or die? I'm not saying in the name of game play we shouldn't have a repair just seems to me it looks kinda magical to see a mast being repaired as quick as it does. The hull repairs don't show up as hokey to me but maybe they are just as unrealistic as far as time to repair goes. I'm all for having fun so if that's what people want I'll go with it.
  13. They may have carried these parts but if we are going to talk facts what was the time for a crew to replace a mast and all the rigging? I work in the electrical field and I know what it takes to replace a power pole and the lines during a storm. That is using trucks and the ground isn't moving beneath me. Not to mention that setting up a main mast and rigging is way more busy and complicated. I bet its longer than 15 mins. More like find a bay somewhere and spend a week at it. For game play I'm fine with a repair option but I would think that the masts should be harder to take down and a long time to repair like once back in the open world after a battle IF you survived then you go into repair mode. I might make battles a little shorter but makes more sense to me but hey that's me. JMHO I just noticed I'm replying to a post from last year and many things have changed. hah Oh well I still think de-masting should be a big deal and not just a quick repair.
  14. Ah yes Discover a new world while lost. I'm not sure getting lost would be a long term thing. Most sailors used maps and the stars to determine where they were in general right? I could see in a storm or in the fog. I can understand that the whole map thing can turn into a go online and look at maps players have made then no getting lost. I don't have a good answer for that. Myself would like to have my own maps to show my discoveries and an area to place notes but I hear what your saying. Will wait and see what direction they head. Nice Kao1808!! " um I see the weather changing... come get me if you need me I'll be in my quaters!"
