Well, I've had some pretty good runs in my BellePoule. I had this amazing last stand against a Spanish Bellona, and I nearly sank her. However, the Pavel (currently testing her out with the 1,000,000 gold redeemable) has definitely proven herself as a very good ship- I have yet to face any Vics or Santis, yet her maneuverability's quite surprising.

Now, wouldn't be ironic if a french player in this ship had his stern raked by a British Victory in battle?

Use of manual sails in open world environment. It would not only give me a chance to practice my terrible manual sail skills, but above all can allow new players to figure this crucial tactic out before getting into battle and forcing exasperated teammates to teach them manual sails whilst they spend 10 minutes stuck in irons.
True story.

So would we represent this by having some sort of "refit slots" within a ship's upgrade screen?
Perhaps it could go like this, in which the refit modifiers change armament and hold size.
I've just purchased a shiny new vanilla snow, and I'm looking to fit her out to fit my needs. I'm hoping to play a naval role, and fight my country's enemies at sea...
Now, in my scenario, different types of ships have various pre-determined modifiers in place. For example, let's look at my new Snow's vanilla stats.
We all know the snow has a total of 28 guns, with a broadside of 12 per side. Therefore, I have 28 gunports in which I can slap on cannon.
However, the Snow's a small ship, and we're going to be using up that hold space for ammunition- her hold could have 8 storage units.
We add up these units (this could be rounded down, but I'm too tired for math) and divide our cannon quantity by two to get our total number of "refit" slots- 27. Now, I can look to buy my refit modifiers. The obvious choice would be to buy "cannon capacity" to fit all 28 gunports. Each CC i purchase represents two cannon, so I have filled 19 slots with 19 CCs. With the remaining space, I fill it in with 8 "hold expansions", with each HE representing one unit of storage. Quite simply, I now have a fully fitted standard snow designed for sinking and capturing enemy ships. This is the Snow's main purpose as a vanilla ship.
But, let's modify the scenario. What if I'm a trader, not a navyman- and hope to use her speed and maneuverability to escape pesky pirates? I'm willing to sacrifice potential hold space to have my hands on this zippy devil- something that can be represented below. Instead of buying 19 CCs and 8 HEs, I could only give my snow 6 CCs to allow use of carronades on my upper deck, and fill the remaining slots with HEs. Though i CAN carry 28 guns if I supply the CCs for them, I've decided to subtract my refitted capacity of cannon to allow more hold space.
This allows players to purchase ships with TWO things in mind- how their ship would allow for greater armament/hold size AND how the ship preforms as a sailing vessel. Instead of necessarily confining my decision to storage and # of guns, I can include the ship's overall handling and performance into the equation.

I feel as though a Europe map could go terribly wrong. Considering the scale of everything, pirates would simply sit on Gibraltar and annihilate everything spare a few 1st rate fleets that dared to leave/enter the Mediterranean. I played an open world sailing RPG game once, and Gibraltar was scaled down to a tiny hole- basically, all of the PVP happened there xP

I, Jack Hammond of the SLRN had a most unfortunate and fairly rude interruption whilst assailing a Spanish trade brig to be pounced upon by a privateer fleet! I quickly departed and ran away- to the amusement of the men at port in St. George- who have apparently been singing this song in their taverns...
(Based upon Sir Robin's song in Monty Python: The Holy Grail)Bravely bold Sir Hammond,
Sailed forth from St. George!
He was not afraid to die
Oh, brave Sir Hammond
He was not at all afraid
To be killed in nasty ways
Brave, brave, brave, brave Sir RobinHe was not in the least bit scared
To be mashed into a pulp by a Snow's carronades,
Or to have his eyes gouged out by flying splinters!
And his elbows broken
To have his kneecaps split
And his body burned away whilst his magazine exploded
And his limbs all hacked and mangled by grape shot,
Brave Sir Hammond! His head smashed in by sharpshooter fire
And his heart cut out
And his liver removed by the surgeon,
And his bowels unplugged
And his nostrils raped
And his bottom burnt off from the fire below decks,"That's... that's enough music for now, lads."
Brave Sir Hammond ran away!
(No!)
Bravely ran away away
(I didn't!)
When Spanish players reared it's ugly head,
He bravely turned his tail and fled
(No!)
Yes, brave Sir Hammond tacked about!
(I didn't!)
And gallantly he chickened outBravely taking to his studdingsails,
(I never did!)
He beat a very brave retreat
(All lies!)
Bravest of the brave, Sir Hammond!
(I never!)Read more: Monty Python - Brave Sir Robin Ran Away Lyrics | MetroLyrics

Terribly sorry gents for the random and out-of place question, but I noted that the USS/HMS Essex is listed at 42 guns? In contrast, I've owned a book of drawings of her hull, ect since the first grade which lists her, quite clearly as a 32-gun frigate. Was this a typo?
I hope this wasn't addressed already, because then I would look most unfavorable...

So it's like the Bellona.... but isn't the bellona.

Holy crap! That bloody tumblehome! I didn't even know that was a thing! Its, like, so wide!
*brain explodes

Lol. If they had the Turtle, you would basically slowly move forward underwater, carrying a little charge and approach an enemy frigate only to find out that she's got a copper bottom. Sounds like something I would totally use xD

Well, I think the Lynx and Privateers are Baltimore clippers- perhaps a merchant version of these might pop up. I would assume a merchant vessel version of a Baltimore clipper would be a bit larger to balance out against the Lynx at least.

One hell of a trade ship, eh She's got cannon stuffed in any available space on her deck, and appears to have a pretty nice hold. If she's a thing, she will be popular- something that can counter the Privateer whilst having the hold and rig to trade all over the place. I would gladly use this ship for any trade endeavors I embark on xD

I'm doing my undergrad in early 18th century maritime culture and I would like to remind everyone that historically, during the 'Golden age of Piracy' the period arguably from 1690-1730, pirates largely DID NOT DO THIS - as in attack each other on sight... some did, but on the whole it was an anathema. I would like to point everyone to a work done by one of the foremost authorities on pirates in the world today, the Republic of Pirates by Colin Woodard, which takes a detailed look at the lives and biographies of the most famous pirates of the golden age, how they worked together and who mentored them, truly an eye opener.
Now I'm not suggesting we have a pirate nation… all I'm saying is, there WAS more of a solidarity between them, a mentality of 'let's look out for each other because no one else is looking out for us' even if only out of self preservation or for personal gain. It was this cooperation, working together for mutual advantage, that allowed them to grow in force strong enough to occupy for a time the entire crown colony of the Bahama Islands and become so powerful that they were able to practically sever trade between Europe and her New World colonies.
I do agree with your proposal here; pirates are not all lone wolves. However, for the sake of this giant forum battle and those caught up in it, let's discuss this in a different post, eh?

Well, this interpretation that a lynx joining the battle is "trollish" doesn't seem very clear to me. Sure, it would be logical to not engage the superior ship, but no one does the most logical thing on every instance. With this philosophy you've presented, in which attacking a more superior vessel is "trollish", everyone who's attacked a ship two tiers up or anything like that is being trollish?
To add, Captain clearly stated that he was looking for some roleplay in it too. I totally understand it- I've been a GM, builder and head loremaster on a minecraft roleplay server for 11 months now set in this time period. Look me up- I'm Sagittarian99 of Adventure Network.
Captain, in my strict opinion was not being a troll. Sure, he clearly made a grievous tactical error, but it wasn't a case of someone wildly suiciding to intentionally disrupt a battle. He doesn't deserve this massive forum argument from all of you, and I think we need to move on. Everyone's butchered the argument about pirate PVP already; the message is clear. Now, lets leave this poor guy alone and move on.
Hoping anyone with locking perms can lock this soon.

Wow; she's a beauty. I feel as though she would be a good trading vessel. One thing that sticks out to me is that she's fairly flat despite the noticeable stern and forecastles; not very curvy in comparison to the other brig models.
I couldn't tell if she had armament or not looking at the plans, yet the photograph shows four gun ports- perhaps totaling at eight guns for the brig. How will this model be armed in-game, may I ask? Personally, I think the four guns per side would be great- enough to put up a bit of a fight versus an enemy but not enough to qualify her as a warship.
Anyway- looks like fun

Lol. It's like the frigate version of the snow. XD
Wub it; hope to see it in-game

Ramming is definitely a problem. It's deadly effects can really mess up your day.
I don't think this would help too much. You see, the penalty is given AFTER they ram- most ships don't even expect to survive if suicide an enemy or troll people. To really eliminate the problem we need something that has more severe consequences, like damage/money/XP taken away in great amounts or ramming at high speeds doing the damage upon yourself and nothing to your enemy.
Idk really. This will certainly help but I think this won't help enough to really do a big number on the tactic.

Brilliant work that made my naval-tactics side geek out for half an hour.
I really like your explanation of raking one's stern- I had no idea such precise fire could do that much damage. I'm definitely using that. Also, you can fire separate gun decks apparently which I didn't know- should come in handy aboard my Snow.
Danke!

Lol. I feel as though no one reads the pre-order page.
It says clearly that the steam keys are sent in batches every Friday- though I received mine on a Wednesday. Wait until Friday, you will get an email w. the key then
Patience my friend! Only a day or less remains!

This sounds like a really great idea. This should be a thing; it would SIGNIFICANTLY help new players like me to learn manual sails properly, try out firing maneuvers and work on your aim. Perhaps the player could select a map type and toggle floating targets or buoys?
Anyway, I hope this becomes a thing!

Guilty. Used a Pavel to sink a contraband trade lynx. I feel ashamed.
