  1. In very broad sweeping generalization, I can see how public stats can impact game play:

-chinsy tactics to avoid a loss.

-disruption and blame games during and after fights.

-win at all costs, and skewed player activity to artificially boost stat specific items, versus furthering game play objectives.

-use of stats to "shame" other players.

-higher risk adverse as a record is kept.

I've seen all of these things. I recognize they are bad. So I'm against any form of public "competitive" stats. There is a large segment of the player base that will only get dissatisfaction from this. I get it.

However, there's two sides to every coin. There is a segment of the player base that will take this open world (SANDBOX) and tailor it to their desired game play. Competitive individuals will want benchmarks via stats, of which the private type will suffice.

Give it an opt in option.

Default is "do not track competitive stat".

    Make it private.

  2. I guess this says something for the quality of the Auld player base.  Even our PVE'er can handle this...  Join the Auld Alliance.  We have the TDA solution.

Rare captured SLVN print of Leviathan attacking - we are seeking the original whenever we board and search their ships (for PR reasons).

  3. We also need the entire column to fire as well as the return to normal ranging fire instead of the delayed one we have now.

My keyboard cries out for another solution other than manual. But I must agree with Prater...

I have considered ranging shot and then turn off a deck, ranging shot, turn on a deck, repeat repeat repeat... But it shouldn't be this onerous. If all Cannons fire kept to right or bow to stern, give me the option of firing all the very first column of Cannons so I can simulate "fire as she bears".

This is aside from the fact I'll need to replace my keyboard soon :)

  4. I'm indifferent. My bias is to data. I'm a business analyst by trade. I know that stats alone only give an indication on "something", and in upon themselves mean nothing: it's just data with no synopsis or analysis.

Maybe most folk's don't get that. Without available data, there is no way to draw conclusions on anything, unless by anecdote.

Just my 2 cents. My bias is heavily towards data that supports a player to improve their game play / be able to rank themselves personally against a larger player base (note, I did not suggest this ranking should be public). And the same for leaders of societies : it would be nice to have a tool for the ones that decide to use it, to allow for player screening.

I trust admin - they're at the helm, sailing this ship. Get us to our destination.

  5. I propose a stat that calculates a guild's contributions to their nation.  Call it "Patriotic Rating" or something like that...it is essentially a sub-type of reputation for guilds.

I don't propose to know the exact formula a person would use...I'll speculate on that below.  However, the intent of this stat is to promote active guilds within the community.  To contribute to a sense of building ownership (a very small, but perhaps meaningful, stat to encourage staying with a nation).

This stat would calculate a formula on a per guild member basis (that way larger guilds do not inherently get weighted more):

    • Duration of time pledged to that nation (scales...max score at 1 year)
    • NPC Killed (eg, per 1000 NPC killed)
    • Emeny Captains Sunk (eg, per 5 captains sunk)
    • Goods Crafted (eg, per $$$ value of good)
    • Missions Completed (eg, per # mission completed)
    • Items Discovered (eg, per item discovered)
    • Port Defended
    • Ports Attacked
    • etc etc etc...whatever major game elements that are in the design

These are weighted...so of a 100%, each are worth a value.  They can all be 100% equal, or some might have more weight than others (example, I would weight duration of time dedicated to a nation more heavily than NPC's killed).  That's for Devs to decide.  The calc is can be made on a frequently (daily), or on some other time basis (eg, calc's once per week).  The score is at the player level and rolls up to the guild and is then averaged out by the total number of players in that group.  This metric is a means of a a guild showing they are active and that they contribute.

Formula Sub-Sets:  These individual items above could also be tracked seperately too:  If a guild excels in one of the buckets, maybe they choose to showcase (make public) that particular stat in their guild profile.  Again, a way for them to say "We're proud we're doing "X" for our nation".

It's getting late :) I'll reread in the morning to see if it still makes sense.  Anyone get what I'm trying to say?  It is quite similar to reputation I suppose.  But also very specific in how it could be calculated.

  6. Convoy system is pretty unique.  Good one Prater.

Thus far we've primarily discussed "stats" or "status" type of items.  Does this topic include other API trackables?  Examples:

    • Player (or Guild) Inventory / assets, by name, type, and quantities
    • Player (or Guild) Sale and buy orders
    • Player (or Guild) crafting projects (presuming that crafting can be a time duration, versus click/consume resource with instant creation...)
    • Player (or Guild) Standings with other Players (or Guild) and/or other entities (eg, nations, etc)
    • Guild member lists
    • Database for all game items (versus just those owned)
    • Letter of Marque available for selection
    • Buy orders available
    • Service requests available (eg, shipping or other contractual options)

Some of these delve a bit more into pure database and API, but other like the first 5 or 6 are more player & guild based / tractable.  To either have these available in an API format, or even for download into 3rd party application could be good.

    Off topic?

  7. I could not find the reference to 1710 Koge Bay. But wiki did provide the following :

It was only during the 17th century that it became customary for naval squadrons to be accompanied by special vessels with the job of taking in the wounded after each engagement. The first known such vessel was the HMS Goodwill, commissioned in 1608 for the Royal Navy. Hospital ships were also used for the treatment of wounded soldiers fighting on land. An early example of this was during an English operation to evacuate English Tangier in 1683. An account of this evacuation was written by Samuel Pepys, an eyewitness. One of the main concerns was the evacuation of sick soldiers "and the many families and their effects to be brought off". The hospital ship Unity and Welcome sailed for England on 18 October 1683 with 114 invalid soldiers and 104 women and children, arriving at The Downs on 14 December 1683.[2]

On 8 December 1798, unfit for service as a warship, HMS Victory was ordered to be converted to a hospital ship to hold wounded French and Spanish prisoners of war. According to Edward Hasted in 1798, two large hospital ships (also called lazarettos), (which were the surviving hulks of forty-four gun ships) were moored in Halstow Creek in Kent. The creek is an inlet from the River Medway and the River Thames. The hospital ships watched over ships coming to England which were forced to stay in the creek under quarantine to protect the country from infectious diseases including the plague.[3]

  8. While always a double edge sword (from game developers point of view) I like to know stats about the state of my nation.

How many active players per nation past X days.

How many player sinks of nation ABC by nation XYZ.

(akin to faction warfare page in Eve)

Folks will disagree with competitive stats, but allow for the collection process of ideas to work its way through. These are global stat collections and 100% anonymous...

    Any other national stats?

  9. Thank you Mr Darby.

I believe hospital ships were present at the Battle of Koge in 1710 (Dannebroge was destroyed at this battle), but I'm going of memory and need to confirm later tonight.

In either event, admin had indicated they are "considering" the hospital ship for other game purposes.

  10. @Brigand (clarification):

    Essentially customizable..?

I removed all (or most) Cannons and install fishing gear as example...and maybe crew adjustment.

Have admin made that indication, or is that the recommendation?

  11. Has this been discussed? Eg, ships with no Cannons that serve other purposes?

As a comparative, Eve Online has purpose built ships, example, mining barge. It fulfills a (typically) non-compete role and makes money via mining (or collects ore for crafting purposes).

In Naval Action, there has been some discussion of hospital ships and merchants... To expand on other possible roles / ships:

    - fishing vessels (large / small / medium), where players can collect resources of fishing belts.

    - troop transports, could be used for meta games / missioning for local populace control

    - Utility Ships. I don't know what it is called, but vessels such as those that facilities the raising of sunk ships. Presumably would have a crane of sorts. Role as a "wrecker".

    - there must have been vessels that were used as repairers... Getting to a Brest or similar port of call would not always be possible... I assume support vessels were common?

    - already noted, hospital ships

    - already noted, merchant ships

    - EDIT: Research vessels. Did such a thing exist? Or were these normal ships, with a different crew compliment... Again opportunity.

Any other opportunities from non combat stand point?
