  1. The above advice is very good. At times I have used it to help on some points I did not understand. The UG community is very helpful.

I like to think I am an experienced war gamer. If you’re not it may be worth just checking out at least some of the advice offered.

But I also wanted to ‘do It my way’. If possible.

I also wanted to just jump in !

My way was to work through different battles. Playing as Union or CSA. On BG level (normal).

I used the battles to learn how the mechanics worked. It is a sharp learning curve. The pause button is useful. Allowing to stop and see what is happening all over the battlefield. To digest and learn.

Only when I felt I understood the games mechanics did I decided to start a campaign. As CSA on BG level. This is where you will have to either jump in or take some advice. Here you are introduced to the Barrack’s. This is another part of the campaign game. This was totally alien to me. So I used my first campaign to learn how to use the Barrack’s prior to the next battle. It is a sharp learning curve. I did not expect to win my first campaign and sure enough by the time I got to Gettysburg I was defeated.

I had to start again. But I did learn so much of how the Barrack’s worked. Understanding that is required if wish to win a campaign.

I again played on BG level as CSA. To cut a long story short. I did win the war.

So it really is up to you. I can recommend the advice offered on the forum. Or like me ‘jump in’. But do expect some set backs.

UG is the best ACW war game available on the computer.

Using the advice will be very useful. If prefer not to. Expect it to take longer to master. But don’t give up. You will find it is well worth the time and effort.

    Best wishes

  2. Hi,

Agree with you there. I have also found that the Farmer can be useful when used by experienced troops. I had captured Farmers. Instead of selling them or raising a fresh Brigade. I issued them to a 1 star Brigade. The high value of 18 caused severe damage on enemy troops.

    Best wishes

I just played this battle again on Union MG legendary trying to use  @pandakraut  tactics with great success.  I sent the Sherman reinforcements all the way across the map edge past the original ford anticipating the map expand in the second phase.  Got a full envelopement.  If you’re interested, I could try playing again and recording it.

    Hi,

Many thanks. That would be interesting. I did in the 3rd phase, push back/wipe out the CSA troops.

One rogue CSA Brigade retreated in the opposite direction. But I did use 2 of ‘my’ Brigades to chase it. Corner it. Destroy it.

I captured various weapons. My surprise was that over 2000 Farmers were taken. Showing just how poorly armed the CSA were.

    Best wishes.

  4. I’m now playing as Union on Major General level. Having just played 1st Bull Run. Giving the Rebs a pasting !

I love this battle because playing either Union or CSA. I use only a small amount of ‘my’ troops. The rest comes from the AL.

As a result I tend to hold ‘my’ troops back and let the other’s take care of the battle. It gives a good start to the war in providing a reasonable amount of money, troops and weapons for the victory. Plus keeping ‘my’ own casualties to a minimum.

I was a bit annoyed with myself for losing my cavalry though. Even more so as I do not field much. So I decided to refight it in order to ensure I kept them safe.

But the CSA AL did not play ball. The tactics used by the Rebs changed 😐. That put me in my place !

So have decided to go back to the first win and simply replace my cavalry should I feel it’s required.

I do love how the AL changes tactics for the same battle. Much more fun.

Any suggestion or advices, how to survive the final battle???

What kind of units for main attack, secondary attack and both flanks!?

What tactics do you prefer? Very defensive or aggressiv?

Pls post your ideas with some screenshots!

    Hi,

I achieved victory at Washington. On BG level. See my post of the 5 October 2018.

If you scroll down you will see the numbers and the make up of my army. I did not use any cavalry.

I fielded 4 Corps. Two were strong. They were used aggressively to ensure objectives were held.

After that I was achieved I only defended. I had the fort on my left flank only lightly defended. The other forts were maned with in a little more strength.

What was then left. Was used to defend Washington. I pulled all available troops back to the city. This caused a delay in the Union troops reaching the city. Wasting time. In trying to retake the city the Union made various assaults. But due to the defensive strength in the city I was able to hold on. The final hour seemed a to go very slowly and it was nip and tuck. But just managed it.

    Hi contact!

We're obviously in agreement as to the quality of this game. I'm bloody-mindedly committed to finishing my first campaign. I've been watching playthroughs and such. I can see now that I will make different decisions in future with a longer term strategy. And that's just another thing I love about this game - I'm already planning my next campaign. Replayability!!! I'm looking forward to upping the difficulty and seeing if I've actually learned anything.

Good luck with your MG campign :)

    Hi

One very important piece of advise given to me was :-

“Keep beating the Union with a stick”  From Pandakraut.

It keeps the size of their army down !

    Hiya

    Total agreement with you.

Make sure you take your time in barracks. It was there I was sowing the seed for victory on the battlefield.

I found that once I knew (more or less). How the barracks works. You will find it handy in a battle.

    Best of luck

  8. Hi,

Glad you enjoyed it. In April I will becoming up to my 1st year playing UG.

I agree with you. It is a fantastic game. All those involved deserve our thanks.

    I’m using Apple iMac.

I started of by playing some of the single battles on BG level. As CSA and Union. One I understood the battle mechanics I started my 1st campaign. Started on BG as CSA. I managed to get as far as Gettysburg. I wasn’t expecting to win the campaign at my first attempt. So was pleased to get as far as I did. But I learned a lot in that campaign. I consider myself efficient on the battlefield. But it was when in barracks I really learned how to win a campaign. Time spent getting that right will provide dividends on the battlefield.

My second campaign was CSA on BG again. Now I knew more about being in barracks’s I fancied my chances. I’m pleased to say I did win the war. Though it was close. The Union troops threw everything at me when I was holding Washington. But just managed to hold. Amazing feeling 🎉🎊😬😏.

Since.I have played a Campaign on BG as the Union. This proved a lot easier. The only problem I encountered was trying to break the Rebs defensive position on the outskirts of Richmond. Most of their army was committed. By taking the victory conditions it meant the following day the Rebs did not have much left. Taking Richmond proved easy.

I have just started my 4th campaign on MG level as CSA. Proving more difficult. Not feeling over confident to be honest. But I will learn from what happens.

Enough of me. Back to UG.

This is by far the best ACW game available. I’m sure we could all come up with the odd thing we feel isn’t quite right. But so what.

I’m so grateful for those involved in UG for providing such a superb game. Though I think my wife would have a different view on those involved 🙃 !

Best of luck with your next battle/campaign.

  9. Just finished Fredericksburg. On Major General level as CSA.

    I had a bit of a surprise.

I mention above I would not use much Cavalry, as I would getJeb’s Stuart’s Cavalry protecting my right flank at Prospect Hill.

Or it was the case when playing on Brigadier General level.

    But not there 😐😳.

Presume I was not provided with Jeb’s cavalry as on Major General level 🙃

    Thanks UG !

Did cause a little trouble. But all went well in the end. Marye’s Heights was a close shave 😐. But held. I did start to pull units away from the Heights to Telegraph Road. Once I felt could hold 👍.

Union troops outnumbered me by a huge amount (of course). But inflicted 43,390 casualties and suffered 13670.

On to Everettsville followed by Stones River. Oh joy 🙃.

    Happy gaming!

I have found melee cavalry, or dragoons, to be quite useful indeed. On routing units they definitely show their quality as even a few hundred men can wipe out a MUCH larger infantry brigade, causing it to shatter or surrender.

Hitting artillery units with little to no infantry support is also very effective. They will also decimate skirmishers out in the open, especially once that melee stat is up nicely.

I have been finding myself with 1 dragoon early, rising to 2 by Fredericksburg at least as the Confederates.

You also get Nathan Forrest with his skirmisher cavalry fairly early on. Those are good at poking at the enemies flanks/rear and keeping a couple brigades busy and not on the main attack. Gotta be a little more careful in melee with those but I still use em to charge down routing units and the occasional exposed artillery.

    Hi,

    Sounds good.

With Fredericksburg looming after some smaller encounters. I will not over do my cavalry. As I will of course have Jeb Stuart’s. Which I have to admit does from previous experience cause the Union troops trouble.

But my opinion has changed towards cavalry though it may depend also on the up coming battles and my strategy.

I do feel I was wrong to almost ignore them previously.

    Many thanks

  12. “Not a fan of Cavalry”

Maybe I’m coming round to using cavalry.

I have just finished the battle of Antietam. On Major General level, as the Confederacy.

A Vuctory for the Confederacy of course 👍.

In barracks I had some men over together with dollars and decided to see what I could use them on.

Options were limited. So I went for 1 cavalry unit of 250 armed with singe shot carbine. Plus 1 unit of 325 armed with saber and colt.

Both proved useful. But it was the unit with saber and colt that got my attention.

Seeing they had a 100 factor for  melee, I decided to use them on units that we’re routing and supplies.

Wow 😳. Very impressed. I took over 4000 prisoners which of course gave me an extra 1000 recruits.

From now on I will be looking to use such a unit. A reasonable priced unit in order to obtain a 1000 recruits. Lovely 😎.

It would seem it is a good idea to keep an open mind 🤔.

Next some smaller battles. Culminating in Fredericksburg.

I do enjoy this battle. Just sit and allow the Union troops to continue with costly charges at Marye’s Heights !

    Happy war gaming all .

  13. Since I posted about Salem Church.

I did manage to carry on till Gettysburg where I “met my Waterloo”.

But it was my first campaign and used it as a learning curve.

Soon after I did start a new campaign. With the knowledge I gained mainly in Barracks. ( I feel I am competent on the battle field). I won the Battle of Chancellorsville and then Salem Church. I did reach Washington and though close came away with Victory for the Confederacy.

I do remember at the time being peeved. As my above comments showed. But I learned from the experience and made sure I was ready in my next campaign.

It is frustrating but so good when Victory is achieved.

I still feel this is the best ACW computer game available.

After winning as the Confederacy in my second campaign I played as the Union. That turned out to be far less of a challenge.

I have now started a new campaign as the Confederacy on the higher level of Major General. Fresh problems to ponder over.

But so far so good. But my next Battle is Antietam. This will I think be my biggest challenge in this campaign to date !

    Happy war gaming all 👍

I've made several campaign in Confederate side in order to reach the lowest losses step by step.

When I reach Washington final battle the best I could reach was 80k confederate men Vs 140k union men...

This battle has a second phase with a massive Union counter-attack on the captured forts, I never managed to win it so far.

I would appreciate feedback from those who won the Washington battle at this level.

I privileged 85% infantry units, (along campaign steps, with large units in 1 corps to achieve most battles, to finally reach 3 Corps), to face such a massive Union forces in Washington.

    Thx

    Hi,

It can be won. I achieved it at my second effort.

The first thing you have to do from the very first encounter is to hit the USA troops hard. The higher the casualties you can inflict in every battle will help to keep the size of the Union armies lower.

At the Battle of Washington I fielded 4 Corps. After the battle the result was as follows :-

    USA                                                       CSA

    Infantry 169475                                   Infantry 73501

    Cavalry 8717                                        Cavalry 0    ( I’m not a fan of Cavalry )

    Guns 881                                               Guns 185

     CASUALTIES

    Infantry 116996                                   Infantry 52504

    Cavalry 5332                                         Cavalry 0

    Guns 241                                               Guns 92

    Missing 507                                           Missing 120

In order to stand a chance I would suggest you need to field 4 Corps. Mine varied in numbers and ability.

I started by looking to take the victory locations and leaving a small garrison at each and moved on to the others.

You need to capture all victory locations on day 1. On day 2 just hold. Don’t be demoralised by the number of Union units you will see on day 2 as they are mainly artillery. I left them alone and just looked to hold.

When it came to holding Washington I retreated my troops to Washington in order to have to hold a small area so to negate the Union numbers. They made rash attempts to retake Washington and suffered heavy losses.

It was close. I was constantly looking at the time to see how much longer I had left !

As you can see I inflicted heavy losses and of course took heavy casualties.

As it is the ‘last battle’, I sold all weapons that I did not require in order to field as many troops reasonably well armed.

I know it is not easy. But it is possible.

You really must field 4 Corps.

Should you have any questions. I will do my best to answer them. I am not a veteran of UG. But I still managed to win in my second campaign.

I found out from my first campaign it is really important to fully understand how the Barracks work. The battles maybe won on the field but careful planning needs to be made in Barracks. On a number of occasions I found myself spending 2 hours or more.  Making sure everything was just how I wanted my Corps.

    All the best

  15. USE OF CAVALRY

Interesting to read all the above on the merits of cavalry.

Must admit I am not a fan of cavalry in ACW. (Other periods yes).

I prefer infantry and artillery. I always try to move my artillery along with my infantry so the artillery does not get isolated.

If cavalry is near. I will always use infantry to deal with them.

At the battle of Stones River. Playing as the CSA. When attacking the furthest Pike. There were masses of union brigades. But all were dealt with/kept at bay by infantry skirmishers.

I also found in my first effort with UG, my cavalry took heavy casualties. Maybe I didn’t t use them at the correct time etc.

But so far. I am happy to continue with infantry and artillery. It works for me 🤞.

    Best wishes to you all.

One of the points most folks still won't accept is that by destroying whole units and armies, you reduce the quality of your enemy. At Weapons Factory I not only completely destroyed the entire Union army, I captured 5 2 star brigades. You will notice that the AI will always focus on your better units, and the player must do the same. Because of the battle at Antietam and Weapons Factory, at Fredericksburg the great majority of the Union infantry was 1 star. Yep, there were a handful of 3 stars, but I believe those are hard coded into the battle (and I obliterated a number of them). There was also a few 2 star artillery brigades but a lot of 1 star brigades as well. If you get to the point where your adversary is putting lots of 3 star units on the battlefield... you're going to have a hard time.

As an aside, I won my Legendary Union Campaign with a K/D ratio of around 3.1 to 1. My feeling is that to win the Legendary Confederate Campaign I am going to need at least 4 to 1. That fits historically with demographics of the time.

Just fought Fredericksburg. My Army of 43 brigades had 38,396 men and 128 guns... which is larger than the one I brought to Antietam (40 brigades with 36,505 men and 106 guns). The Union army had 95,178 men and 254 guns. I lost 10,138 men and 3 guns. The Yanks lost 47,978 men and 46 guns. Because of medicine (which is at 10) when I returned to Camp, my army was not 27,000 men (38,000 - 10,000), but 29,126 men and 126 guns. Medicine not only saved me 2,000 men, but their experience and weapons as well. I have close to 33,000 recruits in reserve. I have 9,000 rifles in my armory and the reputation to buy another 3,500. Wouldn't be surprised to see my army at 40,000 for the next Grand Battle at Stones River. So, yes, Career Points do make a difference.. a critical one. So at this point, without having spent my 2 points from Fredericksburg, I have Politics 3, Economy 6, Medicine 10, Training 5, AO 9 and Logistics 2. I never spend points on recon. At present I view Economy and Training as both equally important so I will be splitting my Career Points equally between them until they both hit 10.

    Hi,

I definitely get it. Re destroying as much of the enemy as possible.

I used your advice when winning the Campaign on BG as the CSA.

Now using it, playing as the Union. On BG.

Thanks for the advice. It works 👍

Here is what I wrote after completing my Union Campaign on Legendary:

    Good luck!

    Hi,

    Thank you.

Must admit I am enjoying playing the Union. I will shortly be starting the Battle of Fredericksburg.

Really interesting the difference in Barracks from playing the CSA. Number of troops not a problem of course.

    But arming them is !

So far I have maxed out on Economy. Also training. Now working up on politics. Plus making sure I can field 3 Corps.

As yet I have not bothered with medicine . My attitude has been. It’s ok. Plenty more troops available !

I do have quality Brigades. I try to ensure they are armed with the latest weapons. But I am still fielding raw recruits armed with Farmers.

They tend to be the ‘cannon fodder’. Having my best and well armed troops behind them. I have used some career points to buy better weapons.

I have recently been awarded the Iron Brigade. However, I’m not sure about overly increasing their number as Veterans. Too expensive !

I have played all the battles and remain undefeated. Still looking to hammer the Rebs every time. As I did to the Union when playing as the Rebs. To keep their numbers down.

Looking forward now to preparing my Army for Fredericksburg.

Really enjoying the different approach to the one used when playing as the CSA.

I am finding it amusing after each battle. When played playing as the CSA I looked forward with anticipation to what weapons I had captured after a battle. Now as the Union, its a bit of a let down. The weapons I am capturing are poor quality and tend to be issued to my new recruits !

    Throughly enjoying it.

    Best wishes.

I looked this game up in steam .

    Interesting it is*

is the date for available on steam somehow set or ?

I started playing UG back in April in this year on Apple iMac.

It is the best ACW game out there.

To win you have to be as good in the Barracks as a General in a battle or Campaign.

It is very addictive. Good graphics and very well thought out. A few unexpected surprises along the way. Makes it even better!

But don’t necessarily expect to win a Campaign  at the first attempt. The Barrack’s side of the game is very important. If you don’t get it right you will find the Campaign impossible to win.

The time spent in the Barracks will pay off when on the battlefield.

As I say it’s the best ACW game.

All credit to those involved in its development.
